The US is simply more willing for Israel to make generous concessions for peace than Israel is. The US wants to get away from oil and terrorism threats by the Muslims and wants to push Israel in the direction of satisfying the Arabs (and other Muslims). Left unsaid is that the Americans support Jewish and Palestinian states but have not pressed the Palestinians to openly express the same. There is little motivation for Israel to make the concessions that the US is urging them to make. The Palestinians, meanwhile, are waiting for everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. If Fayyad and Abbas are more willing to make peace than other Palestinian leaders, Jews certainly haven't heard it. They just look more western because they wear suits and ties.

I view a lot of the fighting as being over land, so it is not surprising or shaming to the US if our government cannot stop it. After all it's been going on for a long time. If Israel wants to continue acting against peace by building settlements in the West Bank and in E. Jerusalem rather than engaging in serious peace talks...then there must be repercussions. It was ignorant for you to assume that Arabs aren't allowed to build homes inside Israel. Arabs do legally (not only illegally) build homes and many have luxury villas in Arab villages inside Israel, as well as in major Israeli cities, including Jerusalem. Only Arabs are demanding that Jews are not allowed to live in terroritory they claim is their own (which isn't only Judea and Samaria, by the way, despite what is told to Western audiences, because it's still constantly reinforced in Arabic schoolbooks and preached in mosques that they claim ALL of Israel).
