I love to celebrate Israel's Independence Day. The reason I have mixed emotions has nothing to do with any "Nakba" or what happened in 1948 but more with the institutionalized discrimination and the Israeli Jew’s refusal to grant non jews (even ones who serve in IDF) equal economic opportunity. Once Israel opens the doors for Israeli-Arabs to integrate within the collective Israeli society and grant them equality it would be normal for us to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day.

There is much hatred for Arabs in Israel. Israel makes us feel as if we are unwelcome guests when WE were the ones born on these lands. We are simply "tolerated" here but no more. They call us a fifth column, they call us squatters, and they deny that we have any rights to live on these "Jewish" lands. I long ago gave up hope there would be equality and co-existence with Israeli Jews.

Don't mix up Israeli-Arabs with Palestinians living in the occupied territories. We have completely different aspirations than them and don't participate in any violence against the state. Discrimination against us have been going on since 1948 long before the 6 days war. Moreover we pay taxes like the jews but enjoy a fraction of the benifits they do.
