1. Boring in Tel Aviv?
Bud the Spud ,   Bright Red Mud (PEI)   (05.06.10)
With all what's going on in the middle east, you'd think that people in tel aviv would be active with anti-war this and human rights that. Interesting to note that they have time on their hands to protest the seal hunt 1/2 way around the other side of the world? Do they ever protest Al Qaeda's Muslim-hunt in Iraq where the Al Qaeda hunters go out to cull the Sunni herds???

Come to Canada in February and take a 2 KM walk in the woods in a tee shirt. If you survive then you can protest till the end of time.
5. The issue with the seal hunt is...
AlexB ,   Toronto, Canada   (05.06.10)
... native communities say that this is their traditional occupation and heritage. The Canadian government is reluctant to take that away from them.
6. re: Israelis rally outside Canadian Embassy...
David Barry ,   Newfoundland, Canada   (05.07.10)
Dear Editor, Seal hunting in Canada deserves a fair hearing beyond what is offered by the political agenda of the International Anti-Fur Coalition. Our seal hunters live a rural life that relies on the sustainable use of natural resources. This is a model that has survived for hundreds of years, to no detrimental effect for the harp seal population, which stands at a record high of 6.9 million animals. Seal products include not only the fur, but also seal oil as an Omega-3 supplement and seal meat for food. Further, if their there were no commercial uses for harp seals, they would very likely be killed under a government management scheme to protect fish stocks - as they are now in the EU! This would of course result in a degradation rather than an improvement of seal hunting practices. Current Canadian regulations for seal hunting are based on independent veterinarian review and recommendation. They ensure the hunting practice meet normal animal welfare requirements. By contrast, there is not a single peer-reviewed scientific study which supports the claims that seal hunting is "barbaric", or "inherently inhumane". If you want reliable information rather than school children to back up your next story, you can visit www.sealsandsealing.net. Regards, David Barry

8. THE SEALS THANK YOU ......
ALSKY ,   TORONTO   (05.07.10)
PERHAPS YOU SHOULD SPEND YOUR TIME AND ENERGY TALKING SENSE INTO LEFT WING ISRAELIS WHO DONT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT ALL OF ISRAEL IS OCCUPIED (ACCORDING TO THE JIHADISTS IN 'PALESTINE') I TOO AM AGAINST SEAL HUNTING. MY GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO STOP THIS CRUELTY IMMEDIATELY AND COMPENSATE THOSE AFFECTED BY IT.

10. National heritage and tradition
(05.08.10)
Referring to national heritage and tradition is one of the dumbest arguments ever. Talk about slavery national heritage and tradition of the USA, or an apartheid national heritage and tradition of South Africa. Unbelievable.

"They ensure the hunting practice meet normal animal welfare requirements." I guess that means "normal" in your warped mind.
12. In the name of "Jobs for the unemployed"
Marcella ,     (05.08.10)
Canada allows the torture and slaughter of innocent animals such as seals. In the name of "Jobs for the unemployed" Canada allows the clear-cutting of British Columbia magnificent ancient forests. This affects not only the landscape but the habitat of creatures such as bears, fish (through pollution of streams) and more. In the name of "Jobs for the unemployed", the province of British Columbia allows the proliferation of fish farms that are decimating the wild salmon population through parasite contamination. In the name of "Jobs for the unemployed" and oil production the province of Alberta is creating a disaster of planetary dimensions in the Tar Sands. Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds die when they land on toxic tar sand ponds, and and huge swaths of natural areas are being polluted and devastated. In the name of "Jobs for the unemployed" the British Columbia government has agreed with Taseko Mines turn pristine Fish Lake, home to 85,000 rainbow trout, into a toxic dump for Taseko's proposed “Prosperity Mine,” west of Williams Lake. There is only one final review before this project goes ahead. This greed and insanity must be stopped. Unemployment is a complex issue but it should not be used as an excuse to rape and pillage the planet. And before anyone says anything, I'm a vegetarian, and I'm also against the inhumane ways in which farm animals are raised and slaughtered.
13. The excuse that this is an ancient way of life
Marcella   (05.08.10)
among the Innuit (Eskimo) population is nothing but a public relations fig leaf. Natives have hunted seal for thousands of years, but they have done it for their own use and only killing a small number of seals. It was a matter of survival. Most of the seal slaughter taking place in Canada is done by people who DO NOT have Innuit lifestyles. They are city people who shop at supermarkets for their food and Wal-Mart for their winter clothes. The sealing season is short and very profitable. The rest of the time these people do other jobs or collect unnemployment - in cities. The slaughter of seals is all about money, not about respecting a traditional way of life.
14. Seals are tasty!
gotti ,   canada   (05.08.10)
Seals are an integral part of the Inuit way of life. It's embedded in their history and traditions. They could not survive without seals. Why is this considered wrong? Is it 'barbaric?'. Perhaps. But so is the Jewish tradition of Caparot. So is the way most fish and livestock are raised on industrial farms. Let the Inuit do what they have always done.
15. Misdirected efforts...how about abortions...
Scott ,   Haifa   (05.08.10)
Baby seals, okay I'm sorry... but it would be more constructive to try to stop all the babies that are being aborted and murdered for convenience sake. Killing seals is one thing...murdering babies is another. A baby is not a fetus, it is a person with a God given spirit at conception. This is tragic.
16. care for all
mitzi ocean ,   poleg israel   (05.09.10)
Thank God that Israelis are not narrow minded or small of heart , like some people (u r a good example of those according to u comment) We care about people, animals, the environment, and not ONLY in our very little country but care about the planet as a whole as we all should. If more people would be like us, there would not be, such evil soulless destruction and we would not refer to the good Sunni People as "herds" like u do!!!!!!!!
17. Good for Israel!!!!
mitzi ocean ,   poleg israel   (05.09.10)
Good for Israeli's that they can look beyond our troubled boarders and care about others too!!!! If the whole world were that kind, intelligent and compassionate it would be better for all the planet!!!!!!!! Long live Israel in peace and power to the all animals' right to live in peace too
18. re:#6
mitzi ocean ,   poleg israel   (05.10.10)
They claim it is their right by tradition!!! We say once human sacrifice, the burning of witches and slavery were tradition too!! And at that time those that didn’t want change and progress fought for these traditions too!! Tradition is never a reason to continue something that we now know is wrong, barbaric and shameful. Only backward soulless cowards hide behind that word ‘tradition’. If you do the right thing you do not need to defend your actions behind blind tradition
19. re:#6 and now the truth
mitzi ocean ,   poleg israel   (05.10.10)
One of the main points is that the sealers are a minute minority and only kill seal a number of weeks out of the year; their main living coming from fishing. The market for all seal products has steadily decreased, due to public awareness and widespread banning. Hence the sealers have not made any real income on the pelts for years now. The number of fishermen/sealers going out to kill the seal decreases every year; accumulating to this year’s all time low of only one buyer that claim he would take no more than 15,000 pelts, and only a small percentage of sealers even going out. Many of the bloody pelts and little bodies were thrown into the sea for lack of buyers. Canada loses a rapidly increasing amount of money on the seal hunt each year. They use funds from their taxpayers, dangerously ignoring their protests, and foot the bill for the coast guard boats, ships, helicopters, icebreakers, and armed guards to keep out the media and animal protection organizations and wasted money on PR for seal products. Canada can change this entire negative, image and income into a positive, via eco-tourism. Today half of the sealers are in favor of a federal buyout of the commercial sealing industry. This would take care of any lost income …. In this way those who once slaughtered the seals can be trained to become, nature guides and make money in a field that has an increasing market instead of one that has all but disappeared. Canada could reclaim a reputation as a civilized nation and make money in a market that is opening up and regain the huge income from the seafood and tourist industry they lost due to the global boycott.
20. Radical leftist busybodies barbaric

Get into a deprogramming mental institution. They should be committed along with peace now; liberalism is a mental disorder...
21. #20 - Caring for animals is not "liberal"

Whether right wing or left wing, any decent person knows that torturing animals for profit is WRONG
22. "Bull fights" more Barbaric Why no protest movement ?

23. Hot and sour seal balls on rice
Schmidlap ,   Toronto, Canada   (05.10.10)
I'd eat seal if it was Kosher. Seal burger, seal salad, sealdog with onions, pickles and mustard, seal cassarole, fusilli with minced seal and cream sauce, seal au coq, seal tidbids on a skewer, served with pita and hummus. How about seal soup with a tomatoe/chicken base? Yummy. And while we're at it, it's cold here in Canada. My toes could use some seal fur wrapping.
24. #12 thank-u 4 ur facts and compaasion
mitzi ocean ,   poleg israel   (05.11.10)
It is good to see someone that cares about the truth and is intelligent and ethical. I am a vegan too. love and peace to u. and re:# 21 thank-u too well said and re: # we do try to end bull fights too and care about ending all animal abuse, but to say that it is worse only proves that u never watched a clip of the baby seal hunt. They are both evil. Humane humans must always do all that we can to end all abuse to all animals and people and the planet too. peace and light to u
25. Clubbing holidays in Canada
vernon marriott ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (05.11.10)
When I worked selling holidays in Canada, I always thought a way of getting round this sort of publicity was to offer "Clubbing" holidays in Newfoundland. You know, tourists could go over and take part in the clubbing themselves. Opens the business up a bit and allows people to experience it for themselves! I'm surprised that school children were wasting their education - and tax payer's money - demonstrating outside the Canadian Embassy. Surely they should have been at school: and aren't their parents culpable for their truancy. Get an education kids: one day you'll be able to afford to go to Canada yourselves and see what really goes on. Better still, you could come on a Clubbing holiday......
26. Israel protests against "barbaric" slaughter?
Michael Hess ,   Charlotte, NC   (05.11.10)
Perhaps you should answer for all those dead and maimed Gaza kids before you go protesting about seals in another country? Israel, the land of twisted and upside down priorities.

This a very clear bad type situation involving violence. If people cannot fix something like this, then there is no way they could fix something way more complicated such as conflicts and all that. It is like might as well pack up whatever ideas of peace and everything else and go home. However people still have ideas of respect for life and are interested in decreasing suffering and death all around, so there is still hope for humanity in general.
28. That is so hilarious!
Tod ,   Canada   (05.12.10)
Satire is indeed dead.
29. #22 Roland Seener
(05.12.10)
While both of these obscenities should be outlawed, at least the bull has a fighting chance against the matador. In fact, matadors have suffered well-deserved injuries from bulls who seem to have a proclivity for going after their private parts. However, the baby seals are completely defenseless against those knuckle-dragging sadists who club them to death.
30. Oh the irony.
bruce ,   uk   (05.12.10)
The photo of the "dead bodies" looks like a scene from Gaza. But hey, Save the seals !
