1. Rabbi Elyakim Levanon should crawl back in his cave
Avi ,   Israel   (05.26.10)
Juat further proof how people such as Elyakim Levanon want to drag us back to the dark ages. Women stand up to your rights and stop being dictated to be by a bunchof mediveval chauvenists.
2. secretary was not fit for a woman - let her be Mayor
Eric ,   Tel Aviv   (05.26.10)
Get this guy out of the 1500's - If a woman can be Queen, President, or Prime Minister as well or better than a man why not secretary? This kind of thinking is in the "barefoot and pregnant" category in a sub-society that expects women to be barefoot pregnant and the bread winner so men can study all day long. And that is plain wrong.
3. Levanon.
Philip ,   Afula, Israel   (05.26.10)
Levanon is the Taliban man.
4. rabbi bans women from public office
Anon ,   Israel   (05.26.10)
This Rabbi says he likes women but in their proper place. He assigns us that place,he does not want us to do it ourselves, nor will he allow us a voice in that decision. He will not allow that we have a head to think, and a heart to feel, and a soul to aspire. You degrade us and then ask why we are degraded, you shut our mouths and then ask why we don't speak. You want to close education to us and expect us to obey our husband's will! Wake up Women the Rabbi wants us to just be quiet and listen to our husbands and not to think for ourselves... this is how suppression of women started in countries like Iran,Saudi Arabia,Yemen! Do you really want to live like that? Israel is a DEMOCRACY and Women have as much right to run for office as anyman, and it seems to me that if we had more women in office here there would be less corruption, less abuse of women as well.
5. Nighttime problem? Hold meetings daytime WITH WOMEN.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (05.26.10)
6. this rabbi is a dinosaur
Lisa   (05.26.10)
this rabbi is a disgrace- he means women are not as corrupt as men are, they are not violent, they do not molest children? No- they don't- this is why this caveman does not want women in politics- . I hope the women of Israel stand up and be counted, as full members of society- equal to men in salary and opportunity- his rabbi is no better than muslim mullahs in Arab countries-
7. This is the right call
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.26.10)
8. Rabbi Levanon - you make me ashamed to be a religious Jew
Michelle ,   Israel   (05.26.10)
This is not Iran or Syria---and the jewish people and religion are supposed to respect and honor women. All Jewish women have the right to voice their opinion and paticipate in any election and like any man will either be voted in or out depending on their abilities not their gender.
9. Losing the battle
Noa   (05.26.10)
Under these conditions no modern Jew wants to adhere to or come back to Orthodox Judaism. Rav Levanon seems to want to attract Moslem men only. Does he think that this is what G-d wants? Discriminating against Jewish women? He is neither modest nor humble. Very sad.
10. Seriously...study the Torah already!
Yeshiva guy ,   Jerusalem   (05.26.10)
- Deborah the prophetess, ordered Barak to go to war. - Esther HaMalcha ordered the people to fast. - Rivka ordered her son Ya'akov to disguise himself so that he would be blessed instead of his naughty brother. - Sarah told Adam to eat the fruit. - Batsheva told king David to appoint Shlomo her son as king. Jewish women with authority in nothing new to our nation, just something that was lost during our horrible exile of 2000 years. And every man with a brain out there knows that for a happy marriage one must give the wife full authority wherever possible! Instead of fearing women in positions of authority, men should start ruling with righteousness and justice.
11. TALIBAN RABBI !
SINGER ,   singapore   (05.26.10)
12. Like pre-suffragette times
Lisa   (05.26.10)
It's actually quite amusing really - the same arguments that were produced by those who opposed women's suffrage 100 years ago. Show which century this rabbi's living in...
13. All about control
Yakov ,   Tel Aviv   (05.26.10)
The effort to control woman, by men is 7000 years old. The pagan religions were female centric, with men in secondary roles. It made sense, since human civilization was in its' infancy, and procreation was a basic need. Male domination was introduced, and pagan religions were labeled "evil". This is modern times, and it is absurd to think that this kind of control persists. This "Rabbi" ( a leader) should not be allowed to lead. His views are misogynistic, crude and archaic. I wonder what his mother, sister and wife think, but I doubt he will ask. Shame on you, Rabbi. You are not a good Jew.
14. Some 70+ years ago
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (05.26.10)
It were Jews who were banned , this "rabbi" uses rthe same arguments , but now it are women who are the "untermenschen" for him .
15. No better than Haredim!
nadav ,   tlv   (05.26.10)
the so called "national" religious camp is showing its true colours and they are not much different than the penguin black and white of the Haredim! The problem is obvious, these people are raised in ghetto-communities and go to "state" schools that allow them to teach superstitious nonsense, gender apartheid, hatred of democracy and civil rights, and don't learn the basic utilitarian understanding of the equality of citizens (even if just among Jewish citizens!) these people or at least their kids need to be sent to be re-educated by the State via a SINGULAR CURRICULUM espousing equality and civics under a democractic government. Otherwise, between them, the Haredim, and the Arabs, Israel will just become another Iran or Saudi Arabia! we must stop this!
16. unbelievable talkbacks
hava ,   israel   (05.26.10)
Reading some of these talkbacks slamming the Rabbi in such obscene ways, I'm much more frightened by the anti-Semitism of alot of you as well as the hatred for anyone who has a different opinion more than I'm afraid of something I disagree with that the Rabbi said. Shame on all of you!
17. to Hava #16
Yakov ,   Tel Aviv   (05.26.10)
Is this Rabbi beyond criticism? Is it anti-semitic to question his misogyny? Should I teach my children to blindly follow, and not question? I have no hatred for this man. I believe he is a very poor leader, and advocates diminutive roles for women. I find this offensive, callous and disrespectful. I support openness and free speech. That means in a democratic society, we support diversity of opinion and belief. You are more than free to follow this type of belief system, BUT it is an altogether different situation when a man of power, denies others a voice. Denying woman equal status in ANYTHING is unacceptable.
18. oh, the joy of gloating!
from a secular woman   (05.26.10)
I'm so happy that it came to this! How I loath these religious women that I see so many of them in Jerusalem who willingly wear rugs on their heads and long sleeves in the August heat, who sit in the rear of the bus so proud of what they see as moral superiority over secular women. Who totally absorbed the ridiculous, primitive and absurd ideology of their Rabbis. You're nothing more that modern slaves. Continue to hold you heads up with false pride, produce many children and dress you 5 year old daughters with long, warm cloths in the summer so they will not "seduce" the men.. You don't deserve to be have the freedom and rights of a human being. You lie to yourself that your way of life is of more value than secular people and that gods loves you more. My grandmothers wore short sleeves shirts and trousers when they helped building this country, and you can only dream of reaching their dignity and morality. I cannot express enough the contempt I have for these people.
19. to #16 are you for real?
Tami ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (05.26.10)
The shame is only on this so called Rabbi's head. Is it anti-semitic to call out a rabbi who is oppressing women? Can we not criticize a religious leader who is oppressing a part of society without you trying to pull out that card? It's not just about his opinion, he is enforcing his archaic opinion on others. When someone makes decisions based on a faulty worldview it is very likely to incite anger.
20. truth is: men are afraid of women...
eporue ,   europe   (05.26.10)
comes from the old trauma... lilith...
21. This man is NOT a Rabbi
Brian ,   Philadelphia, PA   (05.26.10)
Any other person with the title "Rabbi" should be ashamed to be grouped with Mr. Levanon and others with similar attitudes. Is this what we want to teach our Nation. Did Moshe talk to Miriam or her husband? Maybe Mr. Levanon should have a talk with his wife.
22. Ynet, What was wrong in my post?!
Salma ,   Palestine   (05.26.10)
Why did you apply the advisory opinion of the rabbi, only with me :(
23. Family happiness over career ambitions
Andriy ,   Cologne, Germany   (05.26.10)
It's pleasure and honour to see that the Land, that I (as many of the Jews living in diaspora) see as their One and Only real Home, doesn't place any human-made laws and values at the first place.
24. Hava #16
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (05.26.10)
Are you for real??? You agree with what he said that women should be heard through their husbands??? That is so outrageous!! Shame on you for calling people who disagree anti-Semites!
25. I DON''T UNDERSTAND...
Yitzchak ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (05.26.10)
I don't understand what is the uproar? Why is this even of concern to Ynet or you talkbackers? He did not rule for all Jews or for the State of Israel. A solitary woman asked her rabbi a question, her gave HER an answer and it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks about it, except her! And if she turned to a rabbi for a halachic ruling that she knows that whatever response she gets she has to follow - OR DON'T ASK!! Why is this "news"?
26. back to the dark ages...
ygalg ,   Israel   (05.26.10)
it's time for Israel state, if it wants to be continued to be democratic. it should separate synagogue from the state. it should remove shas, from the Ministry of the Interior. give governing, to the rational people!
27. Women will always be in power - GET OVER IT!
Talula ,   Israel   (05.26.10)
Cleopatra Rosa Parks Madeleine Albright Gabrielle Kirk Mcdonald Margaret Thatcher Angela Merkel Indira Gandhi Benazir Bhutto Golda Meir Tzipi Levine and of course Dorit Beinisch would disagree with you - infact I'm sure they'd all give you the middle finger salute. GET A LIFE!!!
28. Really? You think so?
Autumn ,   Washington, DC   (05.26.10)
Perhaps, Sarah, if you actually agree, you should get off the internet and make sure you don't share your thoughts or opinion without a man's consent. Actually, make sure you ask a man's permission before even using a computer as it might confuse a silly woman such as yourself.
29. #16 Anti-Semitism has NOTHING to do with it!
Talula ,   Israel   (05.26.10)
Why do you have to bring in anti-Semitism everytime anyone disagrees with a Rabbi and calls him well deserved names? you Idot! You might like to be treated as a second class citizen and kept in your place - but for most women, secular and religious, these antiquated ways are obscene and politically incorrect. Women have fought for centuries for equality. God you are so dumb!
30. Please save me
Rachmiel ,   MechburgUSA   (05.26.10)
This is what's supposed to seperate Jews from Muslims; however it appears these people are acting as if the two belief systems are the same. This is what's been keeping Jews from experiencing Jewishness (or what ever)- the fear of having to be "over" orthodoxed. Its difficult to follow a very strict (and someone's specific) interpreation of laws that actually do not affect what kind of people we are, but only reflects a desire to follow the most minute' and seemingly irrelevant regulations and laws not connected to the necessities of the actual performance of one's everyday life with honor and the highest standards of morality. Please save us from these zelots who would beckon the end of the world so we'll all be saved.
