I don't think anyone would have guessed that the activists were armed to this extent. The leaders claimed it was completely peaceful and wouldn't resist an IDF boarding. And activists were never armed in the past. But then again - violent racist Turks weren't involved in the last flotillas. I have and know the equipment well. Those "guns" the soldiers had are paintball shooters. You can see that when during the video a soldier fires it, resulting in a big "puff" sound. Yes, it was international water. No, that's no justification. Israel made it clear that the ships couldn't directly go to Gaza, due to many reasons, the least of them to make sure no armaments were on board. Plenty of alternatives were offered, including docking in the Ashdod port and checking the ships and whatever it was they contained, and then letting them pass on to Gaza if all was well. Additionally, a group of people from the ships would have been allowed to go on with the ships afterward. But, no. They wouldn't settle for it. They cared NOTHING for the welfare of the people in Gaza, otherwise they would have agreed and tried to do things in a more reasonable way. They wanted PUBLICITY. They wanted to hit the main stories. They wanted to provoke Israel and delegitimize it. The people on board the ship weren't just "defending" themselves... They were actively attacking the soldiers that came on board... Trying to disable and destroy the helicopters that were in the action... Trying to snatch guns, to harm the soldiers... Knifing them... That's not self-defense... That ship could have been a threat to Israel's security, had it carried missiles that could be used by Hamas. Hamas keeps launching missiles on a DAILY basis towards Israeli civilians and cities... the Gaza strip is only ~80 kilometers from Tel Aviv, the largest area of population in Israel, so don't tell me there's no threat in a ship heading to an area that bombards us. We need to make sure there's no threat. And please do tell me what everyone knows the IDF does... I fail to see what you're trying to say... The IDF is one of the more humanitarian armies out there. Just look at what Russia did to Armenia not too long ago... The world didn't care much... The world soon forgot... But us?
