7. To 1 The reason for paintball guns
The Dude   (05.31.10)
Just a note you can actually see one of the soldiers wielding a paintball at the end. It's the one with the big 'balloon' on top. To help you get an idea: http://paintballcompare.com/images/Paintball%20Gun%20Comparison.jpg The reason for the paintball guns is that it was thought it would just be minimal conflict. They are non-lethal and simply are painful when getting shot with. They also have the advantage of marking out who was shot, singling out troublemakers. Unfortunately, the commander who planned this woefully underestimated the amount of violence that was going to be encountered. Also the use of commandos for more of a police action was a major failure in conception of this raid. While Israel does not have huge battleships or cruisers like the US Navy which would have easily resolved this case. It still would have been better for the navy to simply shoot out the propellers of each ship and just leave them stranded.

They came for war? Is this a legitimate news site or a tryout for Mad Magazine?
11. US+EU will express necessary, grovelling condolences+move on
Sam ,   Canada   (05.31.10)
Surely, the Palestinians and their supporters have pulled this grandstanding shtick enough times for the US and EU to have become used to it. The US and EU must express some crocodile tears to the Arabs anyways in the hope of reducing terrorist attacks on themselves. It's not enough for the West to force Israeli retreat That's just Arab and Muslim wishful thinking. But the next Palestinian showtime will come at any time. They have to show the moneybags behind them that they are busy.

Teed ,   Texas   (05.31.10)

15. Learn from Jap Whalers how to hose down decks first
Alan ,   SA   (05.31.10)
Like Japanese do to Greenpeace .Is there not enough water in the Med to have enough water?? Then spray slippery stuff on floor of other decks except Wheelhouse/Bridge Also your intelligence, like in 2006 Summer War is hopeless.Did you think there were Sea Scouts on Board . Those Turks were experienced combatants Before the attack all they showed o their TV were old men and Women and Nobel prize lady and 95 yr old Auschwitz surviver .
16. A Scary World ?
Jonathan   (05.31.10)
Israel is not going anywhere, on the contrary. It is VERY clear that the point was not to aid the Palestinians. Such moves simply hurt the Palestinians, and the whole region. Turkey is getting closer and closer to the 'dark forces' with cheap politics. It is very clear that people want to kill all the Israelis, to nuke them, bombard them, ambush them, criticize them - but honestly and frankly - the truth is out there. The world is not doing anything against Iran, Hamas, HIzballa, etc. - it is a shame to see how the medias are so happy to kill more people, in the name of 'peace making'. If they really wanted to ship aid to Gaza (and not weapons), attacking these soldiers showed exactly what they were after.
17. well, the world is against us
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (05.31.10)
it used to be a song in Israel in the late sixties, "ha olam kulu negedainu" Next time we will blast the bastards out of the water and then talk to them.

San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, 12 June 1994 International law for armed conflicts at sea The San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea says in paragraph 67: 67. Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they: (a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture. http://www.icrc.org/i... + http://www.youtube.co... .... clearly refuse to stop... + http://www.youtube.co... clearly resist visit, search or capture + http://www.youtube.co... clearly resist visit, search or capture = Selfdefence...
19. @#1 Regarding paint ball guns.
Johnny ,   Stockholm Sweden   (05.31.10)
Hi Daniel, I will explain your question about paintball guns. Yes is it not amazing that you see soldiers board a ship armed with paintball guns? Is it a joke? How were they thinking? Well this is IDF - the Israeli military showing constraint and a true will to do the utmost not to cause unnecessary injury. IDF thought that the "peace" activists would behave as peace activists, that is in a peaceful manner. The paintball guns should have been enough firepower to cause some hurt when fired at close range if needed. But IDF's will to show constraint were met with iron clubs and knives. In the video you can see how the activists try to kill the soldiers with the clubs and possibly knives. God bless you IDF!
20. A point to remember
Alex ,   Stockholm-Sweden   (05.31.10)
These ships were in international waters i.e. they were outside any waterways that Israel claims for itself or claims to have authority over. The civilians on board those vessels are therefore entitled to defend themselves against armed men who are attempting to storm their ship, and it simply isn't an excuse to claim that THIS army has some special exemption from the laws of the sea because, so sorry, it doesn't.

22. @ #1
J ,   LA CA   (05.31.10)
Paintball guns are a lot safe and better then real guns, have you seen the videos. It's clear that the soldiers had paintball guns, and had no intention to killing anyone. The people on the boat started everything.
23. OMG!!!!
A F S ,   Phoenix, AZ   (05.31.10)
I can't believe they were holding sticks those terrorists, they also attacked the peaceful Israeli COMMANDOS with those sticks!! Those ships should have been totally sunk or even nuked... Actually I don't get it why Israel is trying to drive these LAME justifications for its barbarian brutal attack against those peace activists?! You're good Israel, don't worry, its not the first time for you to commit war crimes against humanity and terrorize civilians,,, you always do that and get away with it...
24. #4, agree. Luckily this time
Sergei ,   Pskov, Russia   (05.31.10)
they did not have little children on board for making 'human shield'.
25. Based on what I read, the lnternational law says clearly that
Jan M ,   Netherlands   (05.31.10)
According to UN law, any civilian vessel in international waters cannot be attacked by a nation's army. There's no way around it--Israel broke the law. Fortunately no one will condemn them because they will be called Jew haters if they do.
26. Well ...
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (05.31.10)
It would appear they got what they came for. And then some. Good work, IDF!! Thank you for teaching these terrorist apologists and contraband smugglers a lesson. Kol ha'kavod!

Ever hear of lemmings?
28. To Daniel: paintball - explanation
Alon ,   Petach Tikva, Israel   (05.31.10)
paintball is a sport in which players simulate combat and try to shoot one another with bullets of paint. Bottom line - harmless weapon to handle those "pacifists" (instead of knocking these terrorists down with iron fist as they deserved for their "peace efforts").
29. #14 Alan
Albrecht Klein ,   Germany   (05.31.10)
Each prison needs prison guards. That's the reason why the EUSSR wants Turkey to join.
30. What a load of BS
Libneniyyeh ,   Canada   (05.31.10)
Your own Israeli reporters on Israeli territory reported from your Israeli hospitals that not a single Israeli soldier had been shot, and that the Israeli soldiers did, in fact, come armed with guns! Therefore, the people who died were shot with Israeli ammo! The world is only hearing your side of the story, continued one of YOUR reporters, because none of the passengers (all held captive in Israeli prison) is able to make a single call or report to the outside world. Listen to what Zoe Blunt had to say about her boyfriend Canadian Kevin Neish before making your stupid comments!
