Only military action will halt or at least delay Iran's nuclear ambitions.
2. meaningless is an understatement
laf   (06.09.10)
iran does not care and neither does the arab world. this is akin to steping on one cockroach in a kitchen and proclaiming victory. what is really needed when there is an infestation is treating the entire building by covering it with a tent and treating the entire building. this is proof that clinton is not experienced and has shut her eyes. iran is having the last laugh here and will not even notice the u.n.
3. BIG DEAL!!!!!!!!
Gideon ,   New York, USA   (06.09.10)
Like it really matters????? Iran doesnt care they will keep on doing whatever they want & it seems to me that the only one with the balls to do something about it is Israel!!!! America is all talk talk talk, it's obvious that Iran has plans to bulid a nuclear arsenal!!! it's about time for Isarel to BURY these monkeys!!!!!
4. THAT IS TO SAY -
Arn. ,   SWEDEN.   (06.09.10)
The sanctions mark a compromise between the paralyzed moves sought by the US, -COMPROMISE - the Russian demand that sanctions not harm the Iranian people, and the Chinese insistence not to undermine the recovery of the global economy, that is, China's economic interests. - WILL NOT WORK - !!!, CHAMBERLAINING WORKS !!!. Arn.

...will have their feet more on the ground and his head less in the clouds, for Lula's proven to be the useful idiot of the century with that 'deal' of his! Hoping and praying every day for Dilma Rousseff, Lula's candidate, to be defeated next October! Good riddance to Lula and his PT party!
8. Sanctions and the Acceleration
Brod ,   USA   (06.09.10)
The sanctions will only propel Iran to accelerate its nuke development. For those who think this is the solution to the problem, they are living in fantasyland. The fact is the Islamist-Jihadist world will continue to do business with Iran as usual through Taqiyya and circumvention. Israel better prepare to defend the nation against the aggression of Islamist-Jihadism. To those who think that giving land to the Islamist-Jihadist usurpers and squatters in the Land of Israel will bring peace, they too are living in fantasyland. They simply do not know the danger that Islamist-Jihadism poses to the non-Islamist world. The fact is Islamist-Jihadism is the number one enemy of Western Civilization and the Free World. They should start reading Current Affairs literature on the subject. "Defeating Political Islam" [2009] by Moorthy Muthuswamy, PhD is a Must Read.

12. Actually, rather good news
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.09.10)
Nice change from the usual idiocies issued by the Security Council. Iran's nuclear program will effectively grind to a halt. They cannot acquire high-tensile titanium steel -- necessary for centrifuges (and nobody believed the Iranians when they announced that they had "invented" new second-generation and third-generation centrifuges -- without which you cannot enrich anything. The new sanctions will further cripple the Islamic Republic's already devastated economy. I note with satisfaction that Iran's clumsy attempt to divert the attention of the international community to the hapless escapade of the floptilla has failed remarkably. With a nearly 40% unemployment rate; with inflation at absolutely staggering levels; with severe shortages in retail stores; with all of Iran's cities losing electrical power for, on average, five to six hours each day (most rural areas do not even have electricity); with the growing dissatisfaction of the Iranian people for their mullah-driven government (the mullahs don't go to bed hungry; you can count on that); with the repressive nature of a primitive Islamic code that stifles the ordinary people and with the open perfidy of the last elections in Iran and the outrage expressed by the people of Iran as a result ..... the Islamic Republic is on its last legs. Once it has gone the way of the woolly mammoth, the world will help the people of Iran build something new and better in its place; an Iran that approximates the greatness of ancient Persia and values a diverse society. It won't be long now. Hallelujah!

I hate to disappoint you, but the vaunted Russian S-300 missile defense system is not nearly as advanced as the Russian nuclear submarine the KURSK. Remember what happened to the KURSK? It sank, all hands. Oops. The Russian S-300 missile defense system is about as effective as their SCUD missile offense system -- which is to say, not very. Israel can settle Iran's hash in no time at all. And there isn't a damn thing that Iran can do about it. If Israel were to elect a serious option to silence the "death and glory" rhetoric which has emanated from Tehran for thirty years, you may rest assured that the attack will be multi-pronged and devastating. Here again -- not a damn thing that the Islamic Republic can do to thwart it, or defend against it. I trust I have addressed your question.
14. Iran has the right
hakim ,   Palestine   (06.09.10)
Iran has the right to protect itself from Israels nuclear weapons. If Obama really wants to solve the Mid-East quagmire stop funding Israel and require Israel to destroy their nuclear weaponsand in return they get NOTHING... Israel is not one of the countries "allowed" to have nukes under the nuclear proliferation treaty, yet it carries them!!
15. To # 14 Hakim
Flavio ,   Sao Paulo, Brazil   (06.09.10)
Israel is believed to possess nuclear weapons for more than 40 years - and during all these decades, they NEVER posed an existential threat to any country, including Iran. Israel NEVER called Iran a 'microbe' or a 'cancer' , NEVER promised to 'wipe them off the face of the Earth' and NEVER claimed that the death of millions of their own citizens would be an acceptable price to pay for eradicating Iran. Israel is not ruled by a theocratic elite who believes that a nuclear holocaust would speed the coming of a lost imam and,. thus, the redemption of the world. Israel's nukes, if indeed real, are supposed to be strictly a deterrent factor; Iran's intended ones, on the other hand, are meant to be used as soon as possible,

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.09.10)
Iran has made existential threats against Israel for over thirty years. Sooner or later, it will come to pass that Israel will take them seriously and take whatever steps are necessary to (a) put an end to the threats and (b) ensure the continued survival of the State of Israel. That is Israel's inalienable right. Iran doesn't have anything close to Israel's military capability, any more than Egypt, Jordan and Syria had the ability to defeat the State of Israel, ever, despite the combined Arab states' vast numerical superiority. Iran achieved a shame-faced draw against a vastly inferior Iraq in an eight-year war that cost 500,000 Iranian lives. Iran's materiel is aging and not very good. Their chief source of weapons is Russia and -- lets face it -- their weapons systems are just not all that good. What Iran does have is a huge standing army, but you know what? It isn't the quantity of soldiers in the fight, Hakim, it is the quality of fight in the soldier -- and Israel (as has been demonstrated repeatedly) has a strong qualitative edge. The IDF is motivated and is led by its officer corps -- the Arab armies keep their officers in the rear and send the foot soldiers into the fray. Doesn't make for good morale, which is why the Arab armies will never prevail over Israel. Lastly -- did you know that the Palestine Authority, Egypt and Jordan are the three single greatest recipients of United States foreign aid? Israel is way down the list, well behind Russia, and about ten former Soviet republics. You might want to ask your leadership what they have done with the over 200 billion dollars and 200 billion euros in cash aid that has poured into the Palestine Authority since its creation. Besides purchase grand second and third homes in Europe and pad their personal offshore bank accounts, that is. And that, my friend, is why there will never be a Palestinian state. By the way, you want to dispense with making legal pronouncements because it is clear to me that you are not a lawyer. For one thing, Israel has never acknowledged publicly that it has nuclear capacity and delivery capacity, so anyone who suggests otherwise is engaging in sheer conjecture. Moreover, Israel has not ratified the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty and is therefore not bound by any of the terms and conditions set forth in that Treaty. Sorry to disappoint you, but you are wrong on all counts. Again.

DEAR SARAH - THIS IS ONLY CHAMBERLAINING MEASURES, BY CHAMBERLAINING PEOPLES, GIVING A CHAMBERLAINING VICTORY. DO YOU THINK GERMANY IN WORLD WAR 2, WOULD HAVE BEEN COLAPSING, IF THE ALLIES WOULD HAVE LEFT GERMANY IN PEACE, SOME 3 MONTHS BEFORE THE END OF THE WAR ???. THIS WILL NOT STOP OR HALT IRAN, ONLY A DECISSIVE PREEMTIVE MILITARY STRIKE WILL DO. AND THAT ALSO, WILL ONLY GIVE SOME 2-3 YEARS LULL IN THE WAR, (EZEKIEL CHAP,38-39). MAY JEHOVAH THE GOD OF ISRAEL BLESS THEE WITH FURTHER INSIGHTS SARAH. ISRAEL FOREVER. Arn.

DEAR SARAH - THE KURSK WAS SUNK BY AN US SUB, PREVENTING THE RUSSIANS, DEMONSTRATING AND SELLING, THEIR MOST MODERN FAST GOING TORPEDO, TO THE CHINESE, AS THERE WAS CHINESE TOP BRASS ONBOARD THE KURSK. BY THE WAY, ISRAEL CAN NOT DEVASTATE IRAN IN THE WAY YOU WRITE, EVEN IF POSSIBLE, THE WORLD OPINION WILL NOT ALLOWE THIS, NOT EVEN JEHOVAH WILL, IF JEHOVAH WOULD LET ISRAEL DO THAT, HE OR EZEKIEL OR BOTH WOULD BEE LIARS ACCORDING TO EZEKIEL CHAPTER 38-39. GO BLESS THEE SARAH. ISRAEL FOEVER !!!. Arn.

Thank you for the link, Mark. The people of Iran really are in desperate straits. Anyone who suggests otherwise has a poor understanding of the political reality in Iran today.

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.10.10)
Actually, the KURSK sank because its nuclear plant failed. Over the years, I would say that between the Soviet Union and Russia, about 15 or 16 nuclear subs sank. The best piece of military hardware ever produced by the Soviet Union/Russia has been the MIG. In the span of a little over a day and a half back in 1982, the Israeli Air Force shot down 85 MIGs. Many of those MIGs were piloted by Soviets. Not a single Israeli aircraft was lost. Don't underestimate Israel's resolve. Don't overestimate the quality of Russian materiel.

WELL - A FOTAGE OF KURSK REVEALED A CIRCULAR HOLE IN THE HULL,, ABOUT THE DIAMETER SIZE OF A TORPEDO. AND HERE IN SCANDIANVIA AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, THERE WAS A BIG FUSS OVER A US SUB SEEMINGLY TRYING TO ESCAPE UNNOTIZED OUT INTO THE ATLANTIC. WELL - WE NEED NOT DISCUSS THIS FURTHER, WE CAN AGREE ON DISAGREEING GOD KNOWS THE TRUTH. GOD BLESS THEE SARAH. Arn.
