31. Religious observance level
Miriam ,   Jerusalem   (06.18.10)
I can understand the problem that the chareidim have because every school has demands and here it has to do with the level of religious observance. However, aside from this story, I often wonder if today's chareidim would have accepted our forefathers' children into their schools. Avraham Avinu himself was a convert and certainly did not come from a Jewish family with yichus!!
32. Well said Lapid
Julie ,   Jerusalem   (06.18.10)
As the church of Rome is falling under corruption and hatred, so will the se religious estreme communities based on modern thoughts of bigotry and who feel they are chosen amongst the chisen. It's a matter of time. Their children, who are innocent, in a couple of years will join the army, have girlfriends, go to university and will have a prosperous and interesting life in the neame of true judaism. Israel will finally be a secular country based on jewsih values and identity. Long live Israel, long live the real judaism. King David was a soldier, remember it when you read the tehillim.
33. 28 Anti-Sephardi Racism no better from Sephardi than
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (06.18.10)
Anti-Jewish activities of Netorei Karta When the racist claims to advocate racism in the Name then it is khilul ha-Sheim. Who the racist is excuses nothing. In fact, the Sepharadim European Jews are closer to the traditions of Har Sinai than the Ashkenazim. The Mizrakhim closer than the Sepharadim. The Bavlim closer yet. The Teimanim the closest on the planet. It's no coincidence that galloping racism is found in the tradition furtherest from Har Sinai.
34. # 13, Terry. I always agree with you,
tanya ,   tel aviv israel   (06.18.10)
but I think it is unfair to single out Shas as one of the most corrupted. Cosi fan tutte. By the way, I am a "russian" secular. Shabbat Shalom, Terry.
35. 33 - then explain your racism
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (06.18.10)
racism against arabs and all non-jews (nevermind that you yourself are a gentile who practices rabbinic judaism), and pretty much everyone who is not "pure" in your eyes as you described above.
36. Emmanuel?
Richard Sherwin ,   Herzliyah, Israel   (06.18.10)
Ive been informed the conflict is between Sefaradi Haredim who do allow TV watching and Ashkenazi Haredim who dont. Couldnt a couple of Haredi Rabbis settle this problem between them, even if they cant handle more serious stuff. This cant be the first time Jews have found ways to live together in one school or country with different views as to what constitutes morally acceptable beliefs? Do we support public schools for each version of 'fugitive and cloistered virtue' that humans can concevie of? And if so, what IS left 'public' besides the taxes we all pay and the army and police and government we support and which defend us?
37. Capitulation already in process; see related articles
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (06.18.10)
How easily they bend Israel to their will.
38. A religion in conflict.
Jack.d ,   Israel   (06.18.10)
I do not care very much for Yair Lapids Tel Aviv trendy views but he is correct about the fact that in Israel we have ample bigots and racists not only in the crazy ultra orthodox hareidi camp but also within the secular Israeli community. I believe there is a greater threat for the State of Israel's survival with internal conflict due to the lack of separation between religion and the state than externally.
39. hatred & racism, but on which side?
chaim ,   brooklyn NY   (06.19.10)
As a member of the haredi community, I'm deeply saddaned by this article. I'm frightened to think that maybe there is no chance to coexist with seculer Jews even on a minimal basis. I never saw a racist discussing discrimination, but I knew it would sound absurd. that's what I saw today lapid doing. someone like him, who for years has discriminated against haredim, has no business talking about discrimination.By purposefuly distorting facts and exaggerating half-truths of singular people and never presenting the point of view of all the haredim, he potrayed this entire community an image he imself knows they don't deserve. Its true there is discrimination at haredi schools somtimes, but not always and not in this case. how can you argue about discrimination when 13 of the 43 parents are of mizrachi decent. and about discrimination in general, let me just say one sentence. If as a haredi I will try to register my child in the school where lapid's child learns, you know he won't be accepted. you can disagree with the point of view of the haredim, but please just present them in order to disagree... by not doing this, you seem like someone that's afraid they will sound reasonable enough. and the underlining hatred that is vivid between the words, makes it even worse. how dare you underestimating your own intellectual abilities, by not trying to make a decent argument without mixing in hatred to an entire community. Still I will teach my own children not to hate seculer Jews, because that's what my father thought me when I was young, and that's what they thought me in haredi schools. But I will teach them that some seculer Jews teach hatred toward haredim to their children. Your article will serve as a prime example to prove my point...
40. in us, parents who pay to send kids to private school
esthermiriam ,   washington, dc   (06.19.10)
also pay taxes that support the public school system, and the private schools have to meet civic standards...
41. #16 the school in question is funded by the State
(06.19.10)
It is not a private school.
42. What would happen if MK Gafni were an Israeli Arab?
(06.19.10)
Me thinks he would have his parlimentary immunity removed and he would be tried for violating the sovernity of the state! (deep in your heart you know I am right!)
43. Yair Don Kihot
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (06.19.10)
In N.Y.Beit Yacov schools,if it's found out that there is a TV in a girl's home, she is ousted,in Emanuel the oriental girls come from low social economic homes, where the parents are Bale Teshuva (conversos) who saw the light, but still practice some of their old habits like TV ,and street language,Yair believes that the state has a right to force Hasidic girls to listen to what their oriental classmates saw last night on TV,the European and the oriental Hasidic parents, don't want any money from the state, just to be left alone. Can you imagine the US government dictating to the Aimish to which school to send their children ?.
44. # 25 Ashkenazi
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (06.19.10)
Besalel ! if your dream comes true, and yishai becomes prime minister, whom will Shas milk ?
45. #43 if they are Ba'ale Teshuva or conversos they r on higher
(06.19.10)
madrega than you! So do us all a favor and sit down because if in fact you are in Brooklyn USA you wrote this on Shabbat and so what's up with that? How is it that a Shabbat violator is calling criticizing others?
46. Surprised
Seppo ,   Finland/Thailand   (06.20.10)
I am very surprised as a foreigner. What I know about haredim is that they should know Tanakh. Isaiah writes several times "Thou, Israel, art my servant". It's very abnormal that servants start rioting. Maybe the problem is the curse of Hashem which Isaiah wrote in chapter 6, verses 9-11 about understanding Torah and the prophets. Anyway nobody liked Isaiah and Manasse cut him in pieces.
47. well put Yair
angry ,   raanana   (06.22.10)
a school denying entry to pupils because of their family's beliefs is as racists as any other thing in the world. Isn't a school supposed to teach? so what do they care what the pupils believe at home? the haredi kids can go and study Tora on the afternoon, after school hours on a private institution or somebodys house, but schools should follow the state's curricula and it should be up to the ministery of education to define such curricula. After school they ca do whatever they want.
48. No You Got IT All WRONG
Fran ,   Boston,USA   (07.07.10)
I have no objection to your family aiming for olam abah. What most of us have a problem with is your forcing the rest of the Jewish world to adjust their lives to your standards. In America, those who do not want their children to be part of an educational system that does not adhere to their standards, either send them to private school or teach them at home. Of course, paying tuition for your children would mean that someone in your family would have to go to work.
