Iranian Jews are, obviously, citizens of Iran and therefore are required to abide by Iranian laws including army conscription (generally 2 years in the army). I have served the compulsory military service in the Iranian armed forces. We had a Christian and a Jewish boy (kalimi we call them) serving. He was allowed to take holidays for every single Jewish holiday plus the Iranian and Islamic holidays which no one else used to take and even though it wasn't fare to others he enjoyed complete freedom to leave for holiday as he wished.He used to pray in the mosque on his own wearing the shawl and the kippa and he used to eat his own food. I believe this guy in your story had a problem being himself and living as a minority in a majority different soceity. Thousands of people live here in the UK who are minorities and have to deal with the same issues, its about personal strenght to deal with realities of life. Good luck to IDF and him.
