M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (09.06.10)
Whenever I forget what exactly made me swear off ALL religions, I read articles like this with their tb's and it all comes back.
32. some logic but flawed logic
zionist forever   (09.06.10)
There is logic behind the idea but its flawed. Orthodox married woman are supposed to cover their heads but it does seem kind of crazy that you cover your head but you show off the fact your a woman by wearing a wig to make you look nice rather than simply wearing a hat or something. So in that sense he is right that woman should not wear wigs although generally orthodox women will wear a wig rather than some other form of head covering because its more tasteful. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef seems to have ended up in the middle somewhere. The only people who will listen to him are the followers of the sect he leads so who cares let him preach thats his job. Just don't expect political correctness
33. fake wigs or real ones
moron ,   galut   (09.06.10)
so what should a girl actually do....if she keeps her own hair and only wears a scarf why isn't this modest enough and who wants a 'world to come' where women are set fire to?
34. Fake wigs?
Jacob Erickson ,   Holon, Israel   (09.06.10)
What exactly is a fake wig? Does that mean if the wig is made with real human hair that it is acceptable? Or what if you've been saving all the hair you cut from your own head and make a wig out of your own hair? Woul that be ok then? That's a "real" wig
35. wigs

40. Can't Get Repulsive Enough?
Panda Bear ,   Omaha, Nebraska USA   (09.06.10)
I find it hard to believe that a head covering of any type is going to stop a man from lusting after a woman. There is a 500 pound woman here in America who has a boyfriend and she wants to get up to 800 pounds, and apparently her boyfriend is okay with that. There are also many obese female porn stars so from this we learn that excess weight won't keep the men away, so why should we believe that a head covering is going to do the trick? Let's face it, I think a good hard kick between the legs of a man is more likely to keep a man at bay then putting on a head covering. Even if a woman was covered in pimples, five times more or fatter than the man, and as repulsive as she possibly could get, some guy, somewhere, is still going to want to have sex with her. And then there are those guys who really get turned on by a girl wearing a nice hat, so what really is a nice, holy girl to do? I think they have to do the lustful men a good deed and kick them hard between their legs so they can regain their focus on G-d instead of focusing on their lust so those poor men won't be set on fire when they arrive in the world to come. Yea, in my version of the world to come, the men can be set on fire as well. SO men, put out that fire in your pants now, here in this world, so you won't be put on fire, latter, in the world to come.
41. #29 Philippe God said so? where?
Lisa   (09.06.10)
I agree with you- but where did God say women should shave their head and then put on a stupid wig? of all the moronic laws, this would be number one- (would men shave their beards and then glue on a rug?- I don't think so) wear a scarf by all means - that I can see, so the masters of the universe, i.a. MEN, don't get hard-ons when looking at a mere female- at least women are somewhat safe from being pawed by men in public-
42. See post #8 - what is a fake wig
michael redbourn ,   Arad - Israel   (09.06.10)
I don't understand what a fake wig is. I know what "fake" means, and I know what a "wig" is but I don't know what a "fake wig" is. Michael
43. Against Yosef
Ussishkin ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (09.06.10)
I am coming out against Ovadia Yosef. He is a disgrace to the Jewish people and has brought Judaism to its lowest ebb.
44. The Rabbi AND THE WIG
Simcha ,   So.Cal.USA   (09.07.10)
Obviously the problem is being approached from the wrong perspective. If the men are incapable of selfcontrol to such a degree that a woman must cover their hair or shave their head or wear a fright wig, perhaps the most logical solution is for the men to add a couple of required pieces of adornment for themselves. Blindfolds and whitecanes when in mixed public.
45. Why can't he just wear a plaster over his mouth?
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (09.07.10)
46. Rivka, you should be ashamed
Beth ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.07.10)
Testosterone is NOT an excuse for man's inability to control himself. While I agree with the importance of tzniut, it is also true that both sexes are responsible for their own behavior. Both women and men have needs but there is NEVER any excuse for rape or sexual violence. While I don't think it is good for a woman to walk around in public with her business hanging out, it does not mean that she 'wants' to be raped. I find it terrifying that people like you actually subscribe to this disgusting, violent philosophy.
47. Too many response simply don't get it
S Judah ,   jerusalem   (09.07.10)
1. Many respondants are showing ignorance with regard to modesty issues. 2. Many are showing racist and anti religious sentiments. 3. There is the modesty issue of married women needing to cover their hair in public. Yes I know we men are weak and in general we are and I do sympathise with women on this matter. 4. Many of the wigs available are glamorous or the same as normal hair and defeat the purpose and this is the real target of the Rav. 5 So whats the issue here? that The Great Baba Sali used some strong words to emphasise a point. By all means argue your point, but too many of you are not doing that , you are just being abusive because you think that's cool. That's not cool, it demeans you.
48. Wear a wig, don't wear I wig, I don't give a flying
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (09.07.10)
Just leave the rest of us, including the foreign workers and their children, alone to live in peace.
49. to burn in hell....
N.Pilpel ,   Paris, France   (09.07.10)
a concept devised for mental retards, as ridiculous as hell can be, i guess.
50. Where does it say this in the Torah?
iObserver and News ,   US-Israel   (09.07.10)
This comes as a complete shock: that a Sephardi Rabbi has been coming out with the most hateful statements in the past few weeks along with the most outlandish claims. This mans statements sound worse than Sharia Law and if this is what the Jews would face when moshiach comes then I'm guessing all of us Jews would burn in the afterlife. Judaism is the most sintelligent of the worlds religions because of it's reflection of Hashems will, which is truly compassionate. Judaism is the 'middle way' but this rabbis statements reflect fanatical views that are an avarah and afront to Hashem. No Tzaddik knows the 'mind' of Hashem: such definitive statements reveals a clear lack of understanding of the intent and aim of the Torah as a whole. He sounds like a Saducee, not a Torah Jew. Such men are dangerous. Hopefully the worlds rabbonim will set him straight or the Sepharim and Mizrahim will spiral downward into a horrible spectacle. Where are the chief rabbis on these issues: they've been too silent. The Torah is a Living metaphysical phenomenon that has a malliability to it that allows for the continuation of empathy, compassion and humanity. This rabbi seems to reflect not a single of the highest characteristics the Torah is meant to imbue the Jew with. What a shame. And right before Rosh Hoshana he's telling the world whonis going to 'burn' and who is not? Pretending to be the Judge of humanity right before we are judged by our King is a poor decision. Hopefully the rabbi will come to his senses and repent openly and ask for forgiveness. I wish him a happy new year with many blessings and the same to my Jewish brothers and sisters as well as Bnei Noach!

rai ,   jerusalem   (09.07.10)
Its time we all took responsibility for our actions and the results thereof. As women, its difficult for us to understand that for a man, sexuality is not something easily ignored. Why is looking and feeling our best dependant on looking attractive to men? We need to reconsider our modestly and the great value of self respect.
52. Here's a 2-birds / 1-stone solution
Jacob Blues ,   New York City, USA   (09.07.10)
Take the wigs off the women's heads. Place them over the eyes of the Jews who aren't supposed to be looking at women anyway. Someone could make a killing on a seeing eye dog business here.
53. to #1
raizel ,   jerusalem   (09.07.10)
exactly the point...
54. reply to 50- it's in Torah, but not a law
Hannah ,   Israel   (09.08.10)
There is only a rule in non-Scripture, in the Christian writings, but not in Torah. The thing is, women wore hats or head coverings from way back until women's lib hit in the 1960's. Women in the Mid east, including India, wear a head covering. It has been the custom. The Torah didn't have to mention it- I bet all married women at least - with Moishe wore head covering. We don't know the original reasons, but it came to be for modesty. Living in windy, dusty Israel, I think there may have been practical reasons as well. There is a midrash dealing with the wife of On in the Torah which demon- strates that married women wore head coverings-also the Sotah loosens her hair in humility and shame. So it was always the way. Sorry- non-westerners still cover heads; westerners don't but they did in the 1960's. Remember Jackie Kennedy's pillboxes? Not so long ago, always a hat in public.
55. Banality
Ariel ,   Tel Aviv   (09.08.10)
Please, stop sending people to hell and do something for the childrens that are going to be deported!!!! They waste time with stupid issues instead of using their heads and hearts like humans. How retarded can they be???
56. That was fashion, Hanna!!!

58. At Our Shul Women Wear Wigs
Seth ,   Washington, DC   (09.08.10)
And it really defeats the purpose when a 50-year-old woman wears a wig that looks like the kind of hair that a 25-year-old would wear.
59. Herr Brauner !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.08.10)
With your ideas you would have fitterd very well some 70 years ago in the racist country where they spoke the tongue of your name .
60. To Talula : for men there must be one rule
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.08.10)
DON'T TOUCH . And this not related to the way a women's clothes , hair are . Men may enjoy the sight , but touching only with consentement . I think that secular men , who come more in eye contact with women can better control themselve as those "religious" who when they see a naked arm or leg , become crazy . Regarding this rivkah , she told us she was raped , abused by one , and divorced from the second husband . This say's enough about her . שנה טובה
