Both Clinton & Bush refused to sell Israel Tomohawks because the US has strict laws on the range a missile can travel if its going to be exported. Obama suspended the delivery of bunker busters on route to Israel and short of the F35 since Obama came along Israel has had no major purchases for arms. If Clinton refused to sell prime minister Barak cruise missiles as part of the package for making peace with Syria there is no way I can see Obma selling Israel cruise missiles. Assuming that Obama did agree to a sale of cruise missiles what would be his political price from Israel. Obama never does or gives anything to Israel no strings attached. Israel has already developed its own cruise missiles because of the US rejections for Tomohawks in the past. Better to continue domestic development rather than grovel to our enemy in the White House who would like nothing better than to see Israel destroyed and every inch of the country given to the arabs.

Why does Israel need more offense weapons any way? I can see the need for defensive ones, like anti-rockets systems and aircraft. Peace is a better solution than a continuing arms race, even if US largely footing the bill.

US tax payers get a good deal from military aid. This money must be spent on Made in America. We don't get a cash hand out and say buy what you want from who you want. Recipients of military aid are obligated to spend around 70% of any weapons they plan to buy on top of military aid on US weapons. We can't buy a couple of F16s with aid and spend the rest of the military budget in Europe. So we have to spend our own money in the US. Israel spends between $5-$10 billion on the military around $2.5 billion and around 70% of its own money Israel is spending must be spent in the US. Military aid also gives the US so much political muscle over Israel. Either we tow the line or no more toys. The US gives military aid in some form to around 30-40 countries. Its real purpose is to subsidize the US arms industry which needs government investment to stay ahead of the competition. The government is not allowed to give cash handouts to these private sector companies so in the budget money is granted to various countries in the form of military aid which creates a loophole to subsidize the industry. It also helps keeping production lines open for aging designs like F15 & F16. They are not top of the best anymore compared to the newer competition made by foreigners but if you can get an F16 on aid or a superior $80 million Eurofighter Typhoon for hard cash what will you buy? As for why Israel needs more offensive weapons .. nobody ever won a war by sitting around letting the other guy fire all the shots while you just defended yourself. The best defense throughout military history has been a good offense.

Agree on the subsidizing the US war industry but not on jet and tank fuel that is part of the aid. The long range cruise missiles and bunker busters bombs are a bit more than just offensive, they can change the play field strongly in Israel favor, which is likely why Israel wants them. Israel wants a military solution for Iran along with other countries latter without having to rely on US.
