31. #14 Well said.
Yaniv ,   Israel   (10.01.10)
32. #25 Nelly - Our Terry already wrote a column
Debbie   (10.01.10)
A couple of years ago. Here it is "What Some People Can't See". http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3578897,00.html Terry should write more columns on YNET. Or maybe get his own blog to link to his talkbacks. Terry has the knack to demolish arguments that don't quite pass a reality check. Terry, thanks for your great talkbacks and your dedication.
33. In one sense makes sense in another problematic
Shalom Freedman ,   Jerusalem Israel   (10.01.10)
Demographically, the proposal makes sense. But geographically it is problematic. What would losing the heavily populated northern areas mean in terms of Israel's security? There are of course other problems. The Arab minority does not want to be part of a state which will offer it less socially and economically. Still the proposal does make sense in the sense that an increasing part of the Arab minority is hostile to the Jewish state and thus a danger to it.
34. This won't work
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (10.01.10)
What happens when the Arabs refuse to become 'Palestinian' citizens? They aren't going to want to cut their standard of living by 90%. Are we going to take away their citizenship, and how would that be done? What is to stop the Arabs from moving to another part of Israel? Has anybody with a brain thought this through? I serious doubt it.
35. Lieberman our next PM
Israel ,   My Homeland   (10.01.10)
Horayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
36. Terry's Comments
Larry ,   Palo Alto   (10.01.10)
Very good, cogent and expressed with detachment and insight. He is good at PJM and he's relevant here too.
37. To Tomek from Poland
John   (10.01.10)
True, the author's mention of 'Judenrein' may have been a cheap trick but to compare the 'Final' Solution' to any part of Palestinian life is not only ignorant on your part - showing your lack of historical understanding - but you are spitting on the incomprehensible suffering of 6 million Jews. 56,000 people have died in the Arab-Isaeli conflict since 1948 (in 60 years) and that's Jews, Christians, Muslims, etc...that's the death toll for everyone. You know how many people died a week in Auschwitz? Read your history What Liberman proposes is full statehood for the Palestinians. Plain and simple.
38. two points
nana   (10.01.10)
once liberman said that the war on gaza was to elimenate hamas as abou mazen asked him to do .... and what was the result ..it means after a plane and a force nothing only killing of people and israil crimes second he wants it by the law the un law .. when israil lidtened to un laws .. or do this plan will be right in international law ? the last question is to the author of this article
39. Lieberman
Mark ,   USA   (10.01.10)
The author is correct that without addressing Israel's demographic problem if or when a Palestinian State is established, besides the true Palestinian State that already exists east of the Jordan River, Israel will fix nothing, and there will still be calls for a binational state in internationally recognized Israel. Avigdor Lieberman offers the most realistic vision to safeguard the Jewish nature of Israel. Instead of calling for his resignation, Israelis should instead put this man in the PM office. He is truly Israel's best hope at having a secured Jewish future in the land of Israel.
40. #27...Golan
Malone ,   Hfx   (10.01.10)
Pal women wear panties? I s that over or under their chastity belts?
41. Bravo.
Elad Lending ,   Israel   (10.01.10)
The FM's ideas are worthy of discussion, whatever one thinks of him personally, his ethnic group, the party he represents, or the manner in which he "went behind the PM's back."
42. to #12 Robert Haymond
Susan Kfar Saba   (10.01.10)
Do you remember several years ago a tourist bus full of Israeli Arabs traveling in Sinai had a bad accident? What did the Arabs do? They ran as fast as they could to the hospital in Eilat to get the wounded treated., not to the inferior hospital in Egypt. That's ok, nothing wrong with that. But when they need something they remember where their country is.
43. Judenrein
Yaron ,   Barcelona   (10.01.10)
What the author mentions about judenrein is simply not true. What the palestinians is soverenity. They are accepting that for example settlers would become palestinians citizens. What they do not accept, is having setllers living on palestinian land with the army protecting them, and living as if they were living in Israel
44. 43 - Palestinians don't accept Jewish citizens
Israeli   (10.01.10)
Yaron, You're not informed. Many settlers would agree to stay in Judea and Samaria as Palestinian citizens. Because for many of them, The Land of Israel (Eretz Israel) is more important than The State of Israel. But the Palestinians don't agree for that. They don't want any Jewish citizen in their future state.
45. Lieberman is right
Avraham ,   Jerusalem   (10.01.10)
Lieberman is very direct when he expresses his views, which, we should admit, is not a very diplomatic way to say things. Before accusing him we should first deeply analyse his views which are, in fact, our reality in Israel. If the "Palestinians" would allow Jews to continue to live peacefully in their towns and villages (in the "territories"), the same as the Arabs doi n Israel ( when and if their state be created), then only Lieberman would be wrong. Is there any sure guarantee for such a solution? I doubt very much it could be ever achieved ??
46. 44- You are not the informed one
Yaron ,   Barcelona   (10.01.10)
Dear Israeli, I am afraid you are not the informed one. Look on internet. The following taken from an article of the Haaretz of 2010: Israel should formally adopt the suggestion by Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad: There is no need for an evacuation; settlers who are interested may stay where they are after an Israeli withdrawal and live as a Jewish minority in a Palestinian state. Israel will have sovereignty on one side of the border and the Palestinians on the other - over everyone living there. There will be no evacuation, and Israeli soldiers won't have to take people from their homes. They will simply retreat to the new border.
47. Lieberman's plan is brillant with a correction
Paul ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.01.10)
It should be a one-way street for Arabs to Arab countries, putting a stop to the 'Palestinian false sob narrative'. The only reason why Lieberman is aligned is because it conflicts with the ruling elite's plans for controlling world affairs.
48. To Israeli: Israel Needs to Get Tough(er)
Dav Lev ,   Burbank. CAUSA   (10.01.10)
To Israeli; are you blind? Do you really think for one moment that after borders are adjusted, that the Arabs would tolerate a Jew? Get real. All the settlements will be burned down, including their inhabitants. No Jew will survive the jihad. Their biblical interpretions arent worth the parsha if no IDF around. Perhaps the speech was ill advised. But Avi dances to his own tune as we all know. So does Livni, who contradicted her boss often times.; This is Israeli politics..but there are no coups. Okay, so fire Avi and replace him with whom, Livni, or the former defense minister? Some land swaps might be feasible..reduce the Arabs who hate Israel and show it, for settlements annexed by Israel. A fair deal. Or folks, like cancer and crime, there may just be no solution. Israel needs to tighten up its law enforcement, stop the demos and protests (or confine them), shoot to kill terrorists (no deals) and hang Bargouti ASAP, along with anyone with blood on their hands. Re: Shalit: warn Hamas that if he is harmed..forget Gaza,, Gaza City, and 10 other Pales cities in the Strip. They wont exist. That is how you deal with Hamas/Hez and Islamic Jihadist thugs, which is what they are.
49. #36 - Larry from PA - I agree regarding Terry.
Marcella   (10.01.10)
(Not sure what PJM means, though)
50. Marcella, PJM
Larry ,   Palo Alto   (10.01.10)
It is Pajamas Media, a site run by novelist/screenwriter Roger Simon and his cohorts. Terry, Adina and I can be found there at time writing zippy, zingy opinions on the state of US policy in the ME, on Israeli politics, etc. Back to the article, Lieberman's strengths are his willingness to stand for what he believes and the honesty about the identity of many Israeli Arabs. Another is that he indirectly points to the dreamy denials of Israeli leaders about reality. The weaknesses, in my view, are that he believes that a two-state solution west of the Jordan is really possible. But as far as the claim that he 'portrays' Israel as a racist state, I say pshhaw, harrumph, and a few other things.
51. Post #40 is not mine.
Malone ,   Hfx   (10.01.10)
52. #50 Larry, well said!
Marcella   (10.01.10)
Right now there are so many excellent websites out there that any attempt to keep up with them is like trying to drink from a firehose. Burt since you and other of my favorite talkbackers are regulars at PJM, I'll make sure to visit more often. ~~~~~~~~ Terry, Chaim, Adina , you and many other devoted commentators are doing an excellent job by raising questions and bringing some sanity to counteract the timid or nationally-suicidal ideas that afflict so many Israeli Jews. Thank you, guys.
53. a little too generous?
sweeter than honey ,   far away   (10.01.10)
perhaps mr. lieberman. that is if trying to be humane and thus offering the possibility of a real solution, which involves sacrifice from both sides, is not just interpreted as weakness. as it is soundly rejected, you have your answer. no negotiations as this would entail sacrifice, compromise, etc., etc.. maybe, one day, as you say, decades from now, in theory but ...
54. #30 Dav. Like a pauper trading dollars with a billionaire.
Chaim ,   Israel   (10.01.10)
#30 Dav. For Israel to play "land for land" is slow suicide as opposed to "land for peace", which is quick suicide. The Arabs have more than 600 times Israel's land mass. So it's a game Israel has no chance at. It's like a penniless pauper trading dollars with a billionaire. What Israel must do is simple. We must annex Judea and Samaria and pay Arabs to leave. We must further commit to NEVER AGAIN ceding land we liberate in war. Israel would be INFINITELY better off if we'd kept the SInai.
55. #19 Yoav: Ben Gurion was an immigrant
Yitzhak   (10.02.10)
As was Begin. So what's your point?
56. the triangle
solemnman ,   israel   (10.02.10)
Former labour minister Ephram Sneh proposed this long ago.The idea's obvious merit ensures that it will never be implemented.
57. #2 - Lieberman is not talking about xterring people
michael redbourn ,   Arad Israel   (10.02.10)
He is talking about simply redrawing borders. Umm al-Fahm for example is an Arab town that likes to be a part of Israel because of social security and health benefits etc but when Israelis wanted to march through the town several months ago the mayor supported by the population of the town said, "We are not going to let Israelis march through OUR town. So Lieberman quite rightly says, "Simply move the border leaving them on the Palestinian side of it". Michael
