1. ADL should not interfere in Israel's internal politics
RB ,   USA   (10.12.10)
Shame of Abe Foxman
2. I strongly support that...but..
Dan the Jafa ,   Auckland, Aotearoa   (10.12.10)
It is obvious that something else is going on behind the scenes. The law is clearly discriminatory and would have never passed through Kenesset, unless the MKs know something we do not, e.g. that the law is passed in this ridiculous form to ridicule Lieberman, or that it is made for internal consumption - i.e. intended to placate Israelis to show that "returning palestinian 'refugees'" are subjected to an extra oath. This whole story smells like a week-fresh roadkill and I fear what it might mean.
3. Loyalty oath should be for everyone
YSL ,   Israel   (10.12.10)
There are Jewish migrants that are coming into Israel who are anti-Zionists,they smear Israel in the foreign media, there are a few of these Jews new comers to Israel who are very prominent on a certain web site in England that is anti-Semitic and Anti-Israeli. They too should pledge loyalty to Israel.
4. Oath to Christian Democratic State?
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (10.12.10)
...no such thing. Oath to Jewish Democratic State is racist, period.
5. Absolutely
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (10.12.10)
Anybody immigrating here should have no problem with that oath and if they do then they are in the wrong country
6. Loyalty oaths only to non jews
demetrius davis ,   san antonio, texas   (10.12.10)
it sounds like the israeli state is following in the footsteps of nebuchadnezzar. SEE Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. If the nation were truly democratic, it would not have to have non-jews swear an oath to a religion not their own. An oath to a country, yes. An oath to a religious country is an ioath to a theocracy. no different than iran.
7. Loyalty oath should be for UNIVERSAL.
Leon ,   Los Angeles, USA   (10.12.10)
Jewish, Arab, Druze, Russian, Immigrant or native born. All current and future citizens should swear their allegiance to a Israel as a one and only homeland for the jewish people.
8. I agree: loyalty oath should cover Jewish
(10.12.10)
immigration. There are ehough Jews, unfortunately', who betray this country and their nation by cooperating with our enemies. Neturey Kartha is only one example.
9. ADL and oath
moron ,   galut   (10.12.10)
arrogant of adl to have opinion that is so secular--oath is stupid and not less so to insist jews take it..ADL needs new leaders--it's too PC
10. Universal loyalty oath
Michael Davison ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (10.12.10)
For once, I agree with the ADL. Either the oath should be universal or it shouldn't exist at all. Anything else is discriminatory. Doesn't anyone remember Jack (Yaakov) Teitel? He also acted against the interests and laws of Israel, and there are others, too. Many countries don't allow their citizens to swear a loyalty oath to another country while retaining the citizenship of the first country--the US is one of these. A US citizen may not swear a loyalty oath to a foreign country. As a dual citizen, I did not take the standard IDF loyalty oath, but signed an agreement to obey the legal orders of my superiors and obey the laws of the state. At any rate, such a loyalty oath is useless--take the example of Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square Bomber, in open court. He admitted he took the loyalty oath when receiving US citizenship, but "didn't mean it". So it will be with anyone else intending harm. Can anyone tell if someone is sincere in their oath or not? All an oath like this can do is make prosecution easier after the fact-- in other words, after the damage has been done. As for Israeli Arabs-- no one is making the oath retroactive, so existing citizens are not affected. Why should this law alienate them?
11. Who need this nonsence
Yossi   (10.12.10)
For 62 years Israel did fine without this "law" then came Liberman with extreme anti Arab agenda and force his way... Loyalty oath means nothing. Jonathan Pollar was loyal to who? his oath to united state ment nothing.
12. Have the entire population take the oath
jason white ,   afula,israel   (10.12.10)
Make sure everyone hears it in a language they understand.

You wrote: "An oath to a religious country is an oath to a theocracy. no different than iran." Israel is not a theocracy, and the oath is not asking anybody to swear loyalty to the religion of Judaism. To be Jewish is to be a member of a nationality and one does not need to follow the religion of Judaism to be a member of the Jewish people. Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people. There are many secular agnostics and atheists who are proud Jews. The oath is intended to ask new immigrants--people who voluntarily choose to move to Israel and ask to become citizens--to recognize and accept the democratic Jewish national culture of Israel. There are non-Jews from countries like Thailand and the Sudan who seek to become Israeli citizens, we have welcomed these people in the past and will likely welcome them in the future--we do not ask them to become Jews when they naturalize as Israeli citizens, but the proposed oath requires that they be loyal to the Jewish national character of their adopted homeland--just as if I would want to become a Japanese citizen, Japan would require that I be loyal to the national character of Japan as a Japanese country.
