1. The decline of the humanities and the rise of the left
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (10.18.10)
It's hardly surprising that respect for the study of the humanities (and social sciences) has paralleled the rise of the leftist perspective within those sectors. Each of these disciplines has been "deconstructed", and recast to assault Western history, philosophy, social norms and values. Marxist historians declare the Jewish people to be "invented", while the Palestinians are deemed eternal. Archeology is politicized. Cultures are deemed morally equivalent. Free markets are deemed evil. History is replaced by "narrative". And self-described scholars are little more than propagandists for the cause. It's a well paying gig for those accepted into the ranks. The rest of us see only the damage they continue to do.
2. i like this article

away from poletics and away from fanatics
3. Its a lack of basic skills such as English Math and Sciences
Al   (10.18.10)
which will render Israel to thrid world status... Being a blowheart and waxing poetic about the lifestyles and the sexual exploits of the ameba does not make for the advancement of Israel today. These pompous self righteous blowhearts who have hogged the chairs of the intelligensia have been shown the door. Society today wants to eat, produce, sip their lattes and talk and twitter their way to nothing. The pompous know it alls have had their day in the sun...its over...get over it...
4. Important article, with good points. Israel without knowledg
Jae ,   Lynn US   (10.18.10)
of its past and reason for being in the land (the Torah, our history), is like a body with a soul; dead.
5. Where is it written that one can't be BOTH?
Adina Kutnicki ,   Israel   (10.18.10)
This article seems to infer that engineers can't be incisive Talmudic/Biblical scholars. Well, this theory is certainly untrue.I should know. Not only is my son a talented engineer-MIT educated, but also a Talmudic/Biblical scholar. In fact, in high school in the US he was a finalist in the National Bible Contest. So there......... My other son is also a proficient engineer-Caltech educated. He is as proficient in the humanities as he is in the sciences. Case closed.
6. Bible in university?
ORA ,   Jerusalem   (10.18.10)
A Rabbi teaching Einstein s relativity theory,is in my eyes. more reliable than a secular professor teaching Tora.
7. Why? Because Biblical degrees are worthless
blash ,   Jerusalem   (10.18.10)
Biblical degrees are worthless, and I say that as a religious Jew. Why? Because the only thing taught in history classes by Reform liberal arts professors is about how the Bible is wrong, incomplete, and insufficient. Such classes don't seek to find the truth but are rather platforms from which to attack religion. The worst thing is, these same professors don't know the stuff they're teaching about and frequently get stuff wrong. Who do you think is going to have a better understanding of the Bible - the religious man who has been studying it daily since the age of 5 or the professor who took classes for 8 years and wrote a book based on his interpretations? The professor might be more objective but the religious man will know *why* various contradictions etc. exist in the Bible and will be able to answer them instead of smearing everyone right off the bat. And, of course, you can't earn a living with one of these degrees. Engineering degrees are practical degrees that lead to good salaries which is what most people go to college for IN THE FIRST PLACE.
8. Decline in humanities? Fantastic!
Etoile ,   Montreal, CAN   (10.19.10)
I am currently an undergraduate, majoring in History and Judaic Studies. If less and less people are studying these subjects, that means the demand for it will only go higher and that's good news for me. Please everyone, go and sign up for engineering or law!
9. Learn outside of university, on your free time.
Michael ,   The Exile   (10.19.10)
Learning is part of Jewish culture. It has been for millennia before there were universities. However, don't send your kids to university to waste all their time studying humanities. That is like sending them to full-time yeshiva. What people need to do after high school is to figure out how to earn a living. Learning humanities and Torah can and should be a part of everyone's life but it should be combined with living in the real world.
10. ''premised on'' oh no not again!! aarrgghhh
bob ,   New Zealand   (10.19.10)
Show me a single example in the Bible where the term ''premised on'' is used. .............. Show me a single Bob Dylan song which contains this dreadful phrase. ........ The writers on Ynet news are unique in the horrendous degree to which they overuse this dreadful abortion of a word................ I swear to God you people are driving me totally fr*gging insane with your constant overuse of this horrible term. Other newspapers dont do it- what is your problem ? ??? Its not clever. .... In most cases ''based on'' is the correct term - using ''premised on'' in such cases is pretentious and silly >>>> stop torturing me !!
11. Exact science or 'narrative'
Ilan ,   Ariel   (10.19.10)
Science and engineering have real answers that are provable. The humanities has become the refuge for "narrative" which translates into right-think controlled by Israel's myopic and orwellian left academics. Students are getting fed up with an educational system hijacked by ideologues who can not tolerate anyone questioning their dogma.

there is an earth quack in nz. it is not beouse someone disturb you . do you know what is the value of knowledge ?????
14. to 13
bob ,   NZ   (10.19.10)
................. ...''quack'' is slang English for a medical doctor who is a fraud. ......... but I suspect you mean there is an ''earthquake'' in NZ. ........yes! the one you are referring to woke me up - it was a real beauty ........ but the boring news is that there are tens of thousands of earthquakes of various strengths (quite literally ) every year in NZ because NZ is sitting right on top of a huge faultline. ........... I'm not sure what you are trying to say in your comment about knowledge ( my only argument with the author was about word choice) but I know some religious people believe God sends earthquakes to punish people............ I cannot understand how any sane person could believe such a thing , but since my own claims to sanity are also somewhat tenuous I dont tell them to go away and read about plate tectonics ( or whatever it is which explains the timing, strength and location of earthquakes. )........... I dont know if this reply is relevent to your comment because I dont really understand what you were trying to say. Sorry about that.
15. to 13 I think I get your point now
bob ,   NZ   (10.19.10)
...and I agree with your thoughts. I agree with the author about the value of the humanities and to a lesser extent , the Bible , and I have studied them ...... Unfortuneately ,whenever I see the word ''premise'' being used as a verb I lose all sense of proportion and feel a great urge to throw my laptop out of the window, hence my off topic outburst.
16. #3 - English skills are indeed important...
Josh S ,   USA   (10.20.10)
...especially among those would would criticize the "blowhearts" who lack such skills. Was your post supposed to be ironic?
17. What correct ratio of engineers vs. archeologists should be?
