Herzl's original vision was for a state for Jews to be free to be Jewish and not be persecuted. A democratic state with Jewish nature is one thing, but Israel is more and more becoming governed by Jewish Law (and some people want that) as opposed to just having a Jewish nature. When religion is dictating how the state operates and people's right to personal choice is being harassed, then democracy does not exist.
