diamond ,   chicago   (11.25.10)
What other army anywhere in the world would even consider such a gesture? Bravo to the IDF for truly being a 'light unto the nations', by having the compassion and foresight to integrate bright youth with limitations and afford them the opportunity to excel to their maximum potential. Kol HaKavod!
5. Bravo indeed!
jenny ,   Israel/USA   (11.26.10)
Good for them! That is something proud! Just because someone has a form of mental illness doesn't mean they can't contribute anything to society. I have more respect for these young men/women who want to take pride in themselves and accomplish something with their lives....compared to all these religious people who don't even serve their time!
6. Not just compassionate, wise
Elenora ,   Cambridge, MA   (11.27.10)
Great move for the army, particularly because all human beings can contribute something worthwhile. Look at Jacob, with his limp, and Moses, with his speech problem!
7. Agree with #2
David ,   Israel   (11.26.10)
IDF finds new creative ways to waste our tax money.
8. It's a wonderful life!!
Ginette Golden ,   Toronto, Canada   (11.27.10)
The IDF never ceases to amaze me. I feel so much pride and love for them. Indeed, what other army on the planet would implement this great idea. There is a lot of medical research being done out-there for autistic children, men & women without much advancement and this kind of great program/idea might just be the ticket to understanding the autistic world and help them lead a semi-normal life. Kol akavod IDF for reaching out period! # 2 (too coward to sign your name): regarding your comments, you are a sour puss not deserving of any compassion should something terrible happen to you. Remember, the wheel turns for everyone...you can't always be up there nor can you always be down here. IDF is the greatest army in the World! Shabbat shalom.
9. if autistics can serve so can the harideem
Avi ,   Israel   (11.27.10)
10. This story should make draft dodgers feel
jason white ,   afula,israel   (11.27.10)
more like the garbage they are. Except they have no self pride and do not care that young people with various handicaps have been volunteering to serve in uniform for a couple of decades. They care more about Israel than some lazy parasitic old "rabbi" or bleeding heart leftist rabble rouser.

Helping people to lead productive lives is never a waste.
12. In IDF every soldier is autistic
Ivan ,   Haifa   (11.27.10)
13. Years Ago they probably served too
Rena B. ,   Israel   (11.28.10)
Before autism became a diagnosis and a label, there were probably lots of soldiers drafted who had mild symptoms and for whom the army found appropriate jobs.
14. Terrific!
Peter ,   San Diego, USA   (11.30.10)
Terrific!
15. Disagree with #2 and #7
Lyle ,   Vancouver, Canada   (01.06.11)
I do know that a majority of the zionists think the way you do, but I am pleased that Jewish people are slowly, albeit very slowly, becoming more diverse and multicultural. I am glad to see that people with developmental disabilities or mental illness can be treated like everyone else and NOT discriminated against.
16. Will they be counting stuff?
