If this happened today and Israel carried out such a successful military operation to save Israeli civilians, the UN would condem Israel.

protocols reveal barak to be a commando planner that rabin referred to. Peres was gung ho for a raid but as usual was detached from reality. he had no understanding of risks and its technical success. Rabin comes off very well as a tough taskmaster, reluctant till he heard that the raid had some sifgificant chance. fortunately he had allon as foreign minister to give him some advice unlike barak who had peres poodle beilin to render advice. Beilin in peres with a p.h.d. totally detached from reality believing that rabbo, the jew hater and liar would be a partner. Barak as discussed is a tehnical commando guy in the past but should not be at the controls of political decisions as he is a fish out of water. As rabin pointed out, you make policy with your eyes open, not wishful thinking. And you don't make policy out of fear -fear of demographics or fear of anything. And if the worse should happen, israel will go down fighting and clear the area. the status quo contrary to clinton is sustainable with some imagination till a better way is found.

on that day -july 4 1976- it was also thev200th anniversary of american declaration of independence with unprecedented ceremony etc but the news led with a lesson in freedom to the nations from the jewish state--the IDF then as now are heros and israel's peace still depends upon it

It is sad that Israel's government today is filled with the likes of Alexi. Actually, reading these protocols, two things stunned me: 1. Rabin, who I had always thought was a hard-nosed hawk comes off as a weak-willed worrywart and 2. Peres whom I as living in a far-left utopian dream world utterly divorced from reality, came out as one of the only ones who clearly understood the profound negative implications of capitulating to terrorists would have on Israel and indeed the world. My opinion of Peres went up dramatically after reading his words in this article. Too bad that later Israeli governments have not grasped this important concept.
6. ENTEBBE

is one of those words, that, like Iwo Jima and Omaha Beach, forever denotes only one thing: Unadulterated Heroism. For little Israel, still wet behind the ears as a country, to pull off something like that was simply amazing.

needs to remake the movie with israeli and american actors and make it just as great as Munich, this is great PR for Israel and a great true story that shows what real character the israelis are capable of.

I remember this so well and it still fills me with pride to think of that operation. What audacity and skill!
9. ENTEBBE
Jan ,   Houston, USA   (11.05.10)
I remember being in Jerusalem with my cousins on July 4th, 1976, celebrating the American holiday....oh, how proud we all felt when the announcement was made that the hostages were freed....how heroic the IDF was....and is. God Bless Israel!
10. Israel stagged Entebbe but you still speak of heroism

It was designed to torpedo the rival Palestine Liberation Organization's standing in France and to prevent what they saw as a growing rapprochement between the PLO and the Americans. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1553246/Israeli-agents-'helped-Entebbe-hijackers'.html

UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim described the raid as "a serious violation of the national sovereignty of a United Nations member state" (meaning Uganda).

So it's OK fpr hijackers to kidnap and incarcerate innocent civilians, it's OK for Idi Amin to assist the hijackers and give them sanctuary, but it isn't OK for Israel to defend itself against its attackers? Yeah. Right.

As well as I remember it... it all happened a long time ago. But I remember it was a brilliant take-over. Could the IDF do that today? if not, why not?
