To Ralph: the real problemo is Israel's archaic legislative system. Parliamentary democracy for such a miniscule country, is absurd. Not only gridlock, but "deals" to a fault.
When a small party can bring down the enbtire govt, something is awfully wrong. In the statres, there are 50 govt, with two houses..upper, lower. Coalitions are made, but within each house. The govt funds services, etc., but after votes from the legislatures, signed by the gov.
Israel needs: divide into districts. Vote for so many reps in each district. Total, 100 to 120. Do away with the Knesset. Vote directly for Pres (people). Sure, there will be jockying for gelt, but thats okay...no one party will rule absolutely. No Shas, or Kadima wherein people can shift parties on a wimb. Power will be shared, not dictated..is it possible. Yes. Probably, no. Also a constitution defining Israel is necessary, to incorporate old British laws and newer ones. Divorce, marriage, births, deaths..citizenhip? Defined in the document and amendments. Israel has to enter the 21st century. The old rules are prehistoric. The Charedi will have their locks plucked if this ever happens..and be forced into the overall society..or die on the wine vine.
