31. wise decision by assad
dovdevan ,   ashdod,israel   (12.08.10)
israel should take this opportunity to open a dialogue with syria as we can see behind the door the picture is not at all the same . israel should try to separte syria from iran because this alliance is no not natural beween a sunni country and a shia country . the wise decision is to find a just solution in the golan heights if syria is really serious about peace . everything should be done to avoid war !

Exactly right, Syrian in Dubai. War never achieves anything, only misery for all the sides involved. Imagine what we could all achieve holding hands rather than guns.
33. SALMA in PALESTINE
Brant ,   Hilton Head USA   (12.08.10)
Does the continued repetion of the idea about Jews "taking" or "stealing" Palestinian "land" wipe out the reality that it was Jewish land long before any Arab moved onto it? Or, are you just so successful with your propaganda that you can't stop? Build your nation on reality; not on a lie!

Smart boy( at least on paper ) this Assad boy. He knows that syria will be brought to its knees if it goes to war.

Sorry Salma but the Golan belongs to Israel not Syria. Historically the Golan was part of the biblical kingdom of Judea. Under the League of Nations mandate given to the British the Golan was supposed to be part of the jewish homeland but they ILLEGALLY traded it with France who had a mandate to create modern day Syria & Lebanon. The British had recently discovered oil in what became Iraq, the British had some of its provinces the French had Mousal so the British traded for Golan for Mousal which they had no right to do. In 1967 Israel LIBERATED the Golan from the illegal occupiers Syria. There are currently around 30,000 jews living in the Golan peacefully with a similar number of Druze but there are very few arabs there. Except for Kinutra there were very few arabs living in the Golan before 1967. Israel has turned the Golan from a minefield into a paradise brings in millions of dollars every year through exports and is also one of the quietest of Israel's borders so we don't even need any kind of treaty with Syria. The Golan itself is also not Assad's priority from all of this, thats just a distraction. What Assad wants is a share of the Kineret waters. Let Assad rot we will not let him illegally occupy the Jewish Golan.

No such country called Palestine. The Roman Empire have changed the name from ISRAEL TO PALESTINE to hurt them.Golan was part of Israel until the BRITISH & FRENCH have given Golan to Syria, the same thing the British gave Jordan to the kingdom of HASHMITE
38. to #1922 there was no palestine state in 1922
ghostq   (12.08.10)
in 1917 the british conquer the entire area and created the refugee kamps, you just like the number, syria was established by the French only in 1940, and in 1922 the golan was taken by the French. sadly they took land from jews that bought some plots in 1889.

"Damascus told the Iranians in response not to expect Syria, Hezbollah or Hamas to take part in this war.", then I have a ski chalet north of Riyadh that I'd like to sell you.
40. #39 I agree..what they say....
Mark ,   Lodz, Poland   (12.08.10)
...and what they mean could be diametrically opposed... a lot like your imaginary chalet in the Persian Alps, eh?

The Mullahs in Iran still cannot produce an ounce of enriched uranium, yet they behave outwardly like the premier superpower of the world.

John DeLancy ,   Alaska, USA   (12.08.10)
Thank you, my Syrian friend. In a time when people seem to love to say how much they want war or how ready they are to kill their enemies, it takes more strength to say they want peace, that they aren't eager to kill another person. #11, you are right - we need people to believe that peace is possible. If we believe peace can be achieved, we will work toward it. I hope that lasting peace comes soon.

About Syria not going to war today and therefore not being destroyed. This would not be the first time Assyria changed YHWH's mind. Jonah can attest to this. :) The real losers of any war - kids - have been on my mind a lot since last night. I hope that there is peace, for their sakes.
44. im syrian too
Hamdo ,   Damascus   (12.08.10)
..And i dont want to fight a war with anyone either. I dont want Syria to do Iran's dirty work in the Middle East or anywhere. Syria is independant country. What amazes me is that so many talkbacks here are amazed and pleased with Syrian Dubai response as if this is so unusual and surprising for a Syrian, Most Syrians want peace and are not interested in fighting any wars. If you ask the majority of Syrians they will tell you...return the Golan and there will be a peace, like you have with Egypt and Jordan. But it is too resourceful so you wont give it back to us. That is the fundamental reason why we are still technically at war. It may seam our government doesnt want peace because of Hezbollah and Iran but any semi educated person will tell you, we will drop that alliance as soon as we get back our land! Iran has no place in our border...onyl relationship of convenience. SYRIA CAN AND WILL LIVE SIDE BY SIDE WITH ISRAEL...WHEN WE HAVE GOLAN BACK AND PALESTINIANS ARE GIVEN THE RIGHT TO LIVE.
45. #24 - "we more hate surrender"
William ,   Israel   (12.08.10)
now you know why Israel refuses to capitulate to your terror. It would signify a surrender of morals over terror and extortion. Sadly, you are right. The fate of our region is not up to people like Syrian i Dubai, it's up to hate-mongers like you, driven by leaders and terrorists with an agenda. That's basically why you haven't progressed in decades. Syrian can see this as vivid writing on the wall and is justifiably concerned. Even Ghandi was alone in his struggle for peace and freedom, but none will dispute his altruistic intentions.
46. #23- very progressive thoughts, Syrian
William ,   Israel   (12.08.10)
I've honestly never heard those sentiments from a Syrian before, even those who also claim to want peace. Thank you for the progressive and very creative thoughts, which I believe are very rare in the Arab world...for whatever reason.
47. #25 - except when its widely documented
William ,   Israel   (12.08.10)
Sadly, if the facts do't meet your agenda, you disregard them outright. The facts that #17 mentioned are well-documented in League of Nations debates, diplomatic documents, and British records. This includes the illegal Arab economic migration into the region in the 1930s and the lack of privately-owned land despite the claim by "Palestinians" that they owned it for centuries. Hence, the reason the world isn't rushing to "take back" the Golan. They admit what you don't have the balls to do.
48. #30 - "Palestine" was considered a part of the Levant
William ,   Israel   (12.08.10)
Syrians noted this when they cited early on an urge to re-create the Levant and re-absorb parts of Israel, Jordan, and Lebanon under their rule. But prior to 1922, the region was referred to as The British Mandate and before 1917 it was called The Ottoman Empire. No autonomous region was called "Palestine". Get of it.
49. #44 - "Golan is too resourceful....to give back"
William ,   Israel   (12.08.10)
well, that and the fact that the Syrians used it to shell Israeli civilians and farmers for 4 years in the 1960s, and that Assad is so intransigent that he demands it ALL back before discussing peace AND wants free access to Israel's main water source. oh, and if Syrians are so interested in peace as you claim, why do you host most of the "Palestinian" terror groups in your capital and provide them with resources, logistics? The reason technically Syria is still at war with Israel is Syria's refusal to accept the Jewish State of Israel in the region, not the issue of the Golan.
50. #44 - the reason your words are hollow
William ,   Israel   (12.08.10)
"...any semi educated person will tell you, we will drop that alliance as soon as we get back our land!" The same thing was said regarding Egypt and the Sinai, but they still allow weapons smuggling into Gaza which targets Israeli civilians, and incite against Israel and Jews from the top-most levels of govt. The same thing was said of Hizbullah if Israel would leave Shabaa Farms, and then Nasrallah demand a huge swatch of N. Israel claiming 7 Shiite villages are there. In your own post, your duplicity and arrogance are notable..."just give us back our land....and....". Just like your leaders, which never seem to bring peace...you make a demand then add to it with more demands. If Iran doesn't have a border with Israel, then neither does Syria have a border with Gaza or West Bank - so it's none of your business.
51. #44 Hamdo
Hal ,   Usa   (12.09.10)
It is always interesting that people such as yourself want something back after you have caused the reason for it being taken away. This is what children do after misbehaving. Grow up Hamdo, your self inflicted govt has for 60 odd years misbehaved on several occaisons. When last Syria held this disputed territory, they used it to shoot at Israeli farmers and to infiltrate terrorists to inflict damage to Israel. It is not for Israel to prove it's peaceful intentions here, it is for your illegitimate govt to get out of the terrorist business and become a fullfledge member of the real world. When Syria stops it's self destructive intrigue into Lebanon as well as it's ultimately self destructive relations with the crimminal regime that haunts it's own populace in Iran, then you will have different possibilities with Israel. Otherwise you will face a different future. The choice is up to right thinking Syrians that are tired of the loser leaders as well as the loser outcomes that you all have been saddled with as a result.
