1. Heartwarming story
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.28.10)
Quick thinking averting what would surely have been a tragedy. All those who assisted with shattering the windows, clearing the glass shards and helping passengers exit the train deserve some sort of recognition from the State. The names -- and the ethnicity -- of the two passengers who acted so heroically was not lost on me. Why does it take a near tragedy to bring people together in a common purpose?
2. fire train
Shan Ti ,   Belgium   (12.28.10)
Unbelievable that after such a fire on the Carmel, now there is a fire on the train that almost ended in another tragedy. How come the fire extinguishers didn't work and the doors didn't open? How come in Israel only tragedy opens their eyes after the facts? Netanyahu should stop spending money on making more money; he should start spending much more money on saving Israeli lives. Oi vey if another war breaks out, or an earthquake will hit the area. Stop acting only after the facts and people got injured and/or killed!!!
3. Amar... You are a hero!!

There is no reason not to have coexistence. Without incitement from the extreme Left, Fatah and people with economic interests in the "peace process" that has brought, and will bring, only death and destruction we would have peace long ago.
6. The passengers were lucky this time due

to the actions of the border patrol officer and others. Whoever was responsible for the safety and maintenance of the trains should be punished with life imprisonment. The same goes for the people that check the fire extinguishers. They are supposed to check them periodically.Perhaps the ones on board were faulty? Perhaps the company that produces them, has sold other faulty ones to the general public and government institutions? If so, then we need laws to imprison people for life for endangering others, but not m.k.s. They and the treasury are entitled to endanger our lives due to incompetence, stupidity and saving a few shekels.
7. rear is not rail

look at the photos; the epicenter of the smoke is certainly not at the rear.
8. Terrorism
Brod ,   USA   (12.28.10)
The only explanation for this is Islamist-Jihadist terrorism.

10. Passenger train cars as well as other vehicles like buses
Rivkah   (12.28.10)
should be sanded and painted with NO BURN paint and sanded slightly again and painted with automotive paint. The inside of passenger trains should be sprayed with NO BURN fabric spray. That will help prevent fires and catastrophes.
11. Perhaps the same IED (improvised explosive device) thwarting
Rivkah   (12.28.10)
technology that is used on tanks must be put on passenger trains, too.
12. why don't these trains have emergency brakes & automatic...
(12.28.10)
door opening handles in each one of the train cars? That's how the CTA in Chicago has it set up... each car has an emergency brake handle and simultaneous door opening. The CTA system operates in such a way that when a train's passenger sets off the emergency brake system it is automatically reported and all the other trains behind it receive a stop order! Why don't our trains have this system??

pinchas ,   boston   (12.29.10)
technologically advanced! a tank of oil next to the hot engine, no hammers to break the glass, the doors get stuck and the mechanism to open them doesn't work... wow, I'm really impressed by such incredible STUPIDITY!
15. To: Israel Israeli at No. 5
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.29.10)
Oh, I know. I agree. The problem is that the ersatz "Palestinians" made a very wrong choice in 1947. They allowed those who HAD their own country dictate their choices. That was a mistake, which the ersatz "Palestinians" have compounded over the past sixty-two years. I often say that the Jews would have been the best -- possibly the only -- friends that the "Palestinians" could have hoped for. Certainly far better than their brother Arabs. Look at what Israel did to bring Judea and Samaria into the modern world since 1967. All for naught. The ersatz "Palestinians" chose a different path. It has brought them nothing but misery, but it has created a considerable amount of misery for Jews along the way, both in Israel and in the Diaspora. Too many innocent Jews have been massacred for no good reason. The perpetrators have to be held responsible. That, quite simply, is the way of the world. While I mourn the loss of what might -- no, should -- have been, I mourn the loss of innocent Jewish life far more. I am not really interested in achieving an "accommodation" with a rabid terrorist rabble that seeks my destruction. Sorry. Seven decades of unremitting violence has hardened my heart. It's done the same to a great many Jews. I will not mortgage Israel's existence and well-being to non-assertions from an unrepentant passel of terrorists. Too bad. You can't put toothpaste back into the tube, and the ersatz "Palestinians" have had a ridiculous number of opportunities to make things right. They have rejected them all in favor of violence and terror and, frankly -- they're fresh out of chances. I want their poisonous corruption and disgusting mindset far away from our Jewish youth. It will do the ersatz "Palestinians" a world of good to learn that they need to take ownership of their bad decisions and the consequences which have ensued. Period. Full stop. Sorry. Seventy years of torment at the hands of that murderous lot has been more than enough. They are a pox upon the House of Israel, a cancer within our midst, and must be excised.

18. Train fire
frauss ,   Jerusalem   (12.29.10)
It seems like every time you get on an Israeli train you are taking your life in your hands! There have been too many accidents over the past years. Somebody really needs to get serious about passenger safety!
19. why dont i read israel is only for jews here today?
ace ,   san fran   (12.29.10)
20. #14 - the trains are European...and common design
William ,   Israel   (12.29.10)
the same Europeans that saw A380 engines catch fire repeatedly. Israel can only be blamed for the lack of hammers and fire extinguishers, which aren't very technological. But when 1 Billion people work towards your death, it's of little surprise your resources would be used against them and not on the train system. With such an incredibly retarded comment from Boston, one thinks that you're from Cambridge....in the MIT area. True?
21. #17 - Which is why litigation might be a good thing
William ,   Israel   (12.29.10)
The only reason the US has such strict safety laws and are enforced is because you can sue anyone, anytime, over anything. I absolutely hate this mentality in the US but in the cases like this train disaster, it might be a welcome action to make people take the laws seriously.
22. The trains are made in Denmark (in northern Europe)
Jakob ,   Copenhagen   (10.05.11)
In the Danish version of the trains you are supposed to take the seat and use that to bake the glass to escape in case of emergency, instructions are in the “air plane like” safety instructions. I do not know if the export version of the train has the same seats. We are very proud of the trains, or were. The Danish state railways are considering buying the used Israeli trains to use in Denmark as they are much better than the 86 Italian trains that were supposed to be delivered in 2003-6, but we are still waiting.

Hi Jason, how come you are so sure about the lack of maintenance?
