While Russian and Chinese spies have gotten lesser time for obtaining harmful information, Pollard was given a life sentence with a recommendation against parole for spying for a US ally, and giving information that did not harm the US but saved Jewish lives. In fact, Israel only resorted to Pollard because while Israel was sending intelligence to Washington, Washington refused to send info back. The US too spies on allies: In 1995, for example, France caught five CIA officers with their hands in the cookie jar.

he did not give this speech for "nothing". he knows that he will have to give up something in return. and then he will have a reason why to explain to the nation.

How dare you ask the President of the United States to release an American citizen convicted of treason for betraying his country. If he was an Israeli citizen convicted in the US and spying on behalf of the Israeli government I would say let him go, however Pollard is an American that betrayed his country and he is paying the ultimate price. What if Obama requested that Vanunu be exiled to the US. How would Bibi react? Would that be a fair trade?

Arik Silverman ,   Milwaukee USA   (01.05.11)
No, Pollard didn't have access to CIA files holding names of US spies in the East. He DID have access to secret communication codes. When the Soviets had the codes, they were able to intercept communications and discover who the spies were, then round them up and execute them. CAUTION HERE: much of the writing trying to exonerate Pollard comes from partisans of Israel who want to make a case for Pollard's release. They are NOT unbiased and their writings are open to question because of that, and should not to be used as the basis of any opinion as to whether Pollard is innocent or guilty of passing things to the Soviets. The FACT remains that he gave secret communications codes to Israel, and Israel stands accused of forwarding them to the USSR.

If he didn't kill anyone ,25 years in jail are more than enough.During 2005 the US goverment released a greek origin american citizen spy named Steven Lalas after 14 years of imprisonment. His crime was passing secrets of US foreign policy concerning Greece to the greek goverment. The similarity proves that release of Jonathan Pollard is more than possible, provided the israeli goverment has something to bargain with. And I am sure you have many such assets. Such an action would mutually benefit both the US and Israel.
