1. Egypt, the whole arab world is going the same way
avrom ,   bet shemesh   (01.26.11)
The egyptians like the palestinians would be better offf under Israeli occupation they would have more freedom of expression would not be tortured more employments and rights supervised by Israeli supreme court
2. Egypt is a volcano waiting to erupt.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (01.26.11)
Everything depends on the military. Will the army fire on rioters? And, while the top military leaders may be willing to fire on the people, will they be obeyed? Will the army mutiny? Secondly, what about the Muslim Brotherhood? So far, they're laying low. But, if they smell the possibility of success? The situation could change over-night. Third, Mubarak will not live forever. His death could bring considerable turmoil. It seems his son & heir-apparant fled to England with his wife. I'm sure this was not a vacation or a shopping trip. If nothing else, this shows the fear the regime has of a much wider uprising. No matter what happens in the next few days or weeks, regime change will occur eventually. The next regime will most likely repudiate the peace treaty with Israel. The conclusion can only be that ceding the Sinai for a temporary truce was a mistake. Any treaties with unstable Arab governments are a mistake. That's reality. No, Egypt is not Tunisia - unlike Tunisia, Egypt is right on our border along with it's large army that constantly trains for war with us.
3. Well Done
M.Mahmoud ,   Alexandria, Egypt   (01.26.11)
Dear Smadar Peri very good opinion and well done article.
4. double the reason why Mubarak must quit NOW
Nour ,   One State   (01.26.11)
Israel is on his side.
5. Egypt
Birdi ,   Israel   (01.26.11)
If its so safe to travel to Egypt now, howcome Mubarak's wife & son left Egypt & arrived in London with 97 suitcases? I do not accept your advice, Ms. Peri.
6. you're wrong
bob ,   potomac md   (01.26.11)
Mubarak, Jr., has already fled to the UK with his family. It's only a matter of time before Egypt follows the Tunisian model--and in 2 months--surely in 6 months, both countries will be Islamic fundamentalist states.
7. Au contraire, Smadar
Sherifa Zuhur ,   you took my country   (01.26.11)
Au contraire, Smadar! Perhaps Israelis don't know Egyptians as well as they think they do. An estimated 75,800 protesters of a very different ilk than you portray & how many millions of Egyptians who are NOT on the military, police or govt. payrolls? Maybe not such a good time to take tours of the heavenly Nile.
8. Perdi and her hopes for Mubarak
SyrianFreedomEagle   (01.26.11)
Good evening, my good friends! We are at the middle of another week and I once again read the opinion of Smadar Peri, our highly intelligent journalist. In her article, Peri seems to be trying to calm down the Israiyelis and to reduce their worries about the developments in Egypt. She expresses hope (hope from her perspective) that Mubarak will continue to govern and that the demonstrators will be crushed (with violence, as she points out). Well, this is a sad attitude, my good friends. As I wrote before, I am really feeling very, very sorry for you, my friends! If the fate of one people depends on the freedom and dignity of another people in a negative way, your fate is gloomy. Your hopes that the Arab world will continue in dark ages and in dictatorships, then you are behaving like a witch. Indeed, I am already feeling sorry for you... שיהיה לך יום טוב
9. The whole world is a volcano waiting to erupt
Annonymous ,   KUL   (01.26.11)
The elites everywhere must be afraid, Today is Africa, tomorrow it will be Europe, next time the rest of the world. Young people are tired of the brainwashing of the powerfuls, of unendless wars and the misery the tyrants and their puppets have brought to the world. You will not control the world.
10. Egypt is Africa.
Teuvo ,   Kuopio, Finland   (01.26.11)
The sorrowful fact about Tunisia, Egypt and many many African 3.rd world countries is their corrupted leadership. Almost in every African country those who manage to amass the power secure their and their supporters high living-standard and at the same time forget those suffering. The whole Africa is unstable!!!
11. 2 - This time I agree with you for change.
Dave   (01.27.11)
However, by avoiding a resolution of the conflict, Israel is putting, both Mubarak, and the king in Jordan, both countries that signed peace treaties with Israel under tremendous pressure by their population. I agree both are volcanoes waiting to erupt.
12. That's what they said about the Shah of Iran
Alex   (01.26.11)
13. To David # 12
Rachel ,   US   (01.27.11)
Egyptians are not in the street of the peace process or lack thereof. They are in the streets because they can not feed their children on $2/a day. And Palestinians in Jordan are treated worse than in Israel. Get your perspective straight.
14. # 7-8 Sherifa and Syrian
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (01.27.11)
Iran is a rich country,so,it can afford itself to impose on the people sharia laws, but how will the Muslim brotherhood feed 80 Million people ?,the people in Gaza who are ruled by the local Muslim brothehood, are not very happy, eccept for the fat cats at the top,why do you think that in Egypt it will be different ?.
15. # 11 This time
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (01.27.11)
Dave ! If tomorrow there will be a peace treaty between Israel and all Muslim contries,it will not solve the problems of Egypt and Jordan, because the people in those countries are primitive and backwarded, and easily influenced by the mulas in the musques, that the infidel is the enemy, the enemy takes up most of the time of the believers so,no much time is left for trivial things, like feeding the family, improving life,Allah's needs take priority.
16. # 1 Egypt
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (01.27.11)
avrom ! Will you submit your suggestion to the Egyptians personally ? just go to Cairo, stand up on a box,and tell the Egyptians about your solution, beside did you discuss this briliant idea with the leaders of Israel ?,they'll be delighted.
17. He will go
Ali ,   Egypt   (01.27.11)
At the his age I think its not worth the gamble and pain because how long does he have? and it seems like the talk of bringing his son is over this is why I think he will go
18. Oppression leads to natural anger
Milton ,   Seattle USA   (01.27.11)
I would not consider going to Egypt at this time. I do not understand human nature. Why would Mubarak want to continue rule over a dilapidated country one that he has no resolve to help improve? I would think that ego has gotten the better part of this old man. Bad leaders deserve bad countries. Old men die. When I see such cruel leaders it makes me glad that in America each citizen has the right to own a gun.
19. I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH MS PERI
Mohmed ,   Alexandria, Egypt   (01.27.11)
EVERY SINGLE WORD IS TRUE AND ACCURATE AND I WANNA ALSO ADD THAT THE TUNISIAN PEOPLE ARE MORE BRAVE THAN US WE NOT BRAVE ENOUGH TO GET RID OF THIEF MUBARAK EVEN THOUGH WE ARE 80 MILLION AND TUNISIA IS ONLY 10 MILLION I HOPE WE CAN GET RID OF HIM AND BRING AMR MOUSSA OR EL BRADY TO RULE EGYPT WITH SPECIFIC TERMS I WANNA ALSO SAY SOMETHING TO MY FRIENDS IN ISRAEL I NOTICED ALL COMMENTS ARE TALKING ABOUT MUBARAK GOES AND THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD COMES TO RULE PLEASE GUYS THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN CUZ MORE THAN 80% OF THE EGYPTIANS INCLUDING ME DONT LIKE THEM AT ALL MY ISRAELI FRIENDS TALK ABOUT WAR NO GUYS WE DONT WANT WAR WITH YOU, I KNOW SOME WANT THAT BUT THOSE ARE VERY FEW AMONG THE EGYPTIANS THE ENTIRE EGYPTIAN YOUTH LIKES ISRAEL EVEN THE YOUTH YOU SEE ON TV DEMONSTRATING AGAINST ISRAEL BECAUSE IF YOU WHISPER IN THEIR EARS AND SAY COME ON GUYS I KNOW SOMEBODY THAT CAN GIVE US A VISA TO ISRAEL THEY WILL GO RIGHT AWAY AND PAY ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY TO GET THAT VISA IT'S ONLY THE MEDIA THAT BRINGS AGAINST ISRAEL COME ON GUYS ENOUGH TALKING ABOUT WAR WE SHOULD BE PROUD THAT WE HAVE PEACE SHALOM FROM EGYPT TO THE STATE OF ISRAEL
20. Then why has the Mubarak family fled?
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.27.11)
If Egypt is so stable why is only Hosni the only one left in the country?
21. The Shah of Iran had better security.
Nora Tel Aviv   (01.27.11)

22. I Don't Know ...
Christy ,   Boston, US   (01.27.11)
I support the Egyptians in having better economic opportunities and for something to be done to help the poor unskilled people now. I agree that Egypt is not Tunisia, and Mubarak will tough it out. However, I'd like to see him institute some reforms for his people. If things don't change, and the grinding poverty remains, this opens a wide door for fanatical Islamists to eventually take over the country. I'd hate to see that happen. People who are poor, see corruption in their country, and feel there will be no change are fertile ground to be recruits in Jihad by groups such as the Brotherhood. This would be bad for the entire region.
23. #8
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.27.11)
Let me explain. Ms. Peri is from the extreme Left. Any other conclusion would mean she'd have to admit that the Zionists are right and that peace will only be achieved with expulsion of the Fatah terrorists and Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria. If you want a rational, non-Leftist view, read #2.
24. Middle East Caliphate
ג'ון הנביא   (01.27.11)
Israel, the Middle East Caliphate is taking shape right under your nose. The uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt will soon spread to Jordan then Syria. As these events unfold those who wear black turbans will be fanning out to grab for power. In the end you'll find yourself surrounded by ranting Jihadist armed to the teeth (remember all the arms these countries have been supplied with) screaming death to Israel. Your time to act is short!
25. 16 #thanks for your recommendation
Avrom ,   bet shemesh   (01.27.11)
The Egyptians are jealous of the Palestinians in the west bank and in Israel They have freedom of expression without the fear of torture from the Israelis and the poor have better quality of life and health care and not abused by corrupt leaders and the israeli police force and .judiciary ensure rule of law and due process
26. #23
SyrianFreedomEagle   (01.27.11)
I do not care what Predi's view is. I do not care what the view of left and right is. I do not care about any view of any Icrayeli. I care about us. We (=Arabs) need to get rid of dictatorships and free the land of Occupied Palestine. We need to arm and acquire all types of weapons for self-defense. We need to build our countries with a strong and efficient infrastructure. We need to develop free democracies based on human rights. This is my view.
27. # 17 He will go
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (01.27.11)
Ali ! than what ?,To paraphrase Winston Churchill:Mubarak is the worst, eccept for the others.
28. #26
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.27.11)
I will tell you how to have peace. Make sure Israel has safe borders so your dictators won't try to attack Israel. Safe borders include Israeli Golan, Judea and Samaria. Disperse all the "refugee camps" and make the fake refugees citizens who start working and stop living on handouts. Stop all cash transfer and aid to the the fake refugees. Have a population exchange: Christians, Bahai and Druze to Israel, Muslims to the Muslim countries. Allow independence for non-Arabs in the Middle-east, especially the Kurds. Normalize relationship with Israel. Until you take these steps, your countries will not change, and I tell you this with sadness.
29. 28# the conceptof a peaceful arab/muslim state is impossible
avrom ,   bet shemesh   (01.27.11)
as arab dictatorships such as Sadaams Iraq Mubarak Egypt are corrupt and have to supress their own populations with torture and Arab democracies such as Iran and Lebanon and GazaHamas threaten their neighbours and Shias and Sunni and Kurds get along like a house on fire such as democratic Iraq In what state of governance can there be a peaceful Aran /muslim state?
30. Nour-The main reason Rioters should quit
