1. What moderate Arab countries: those that cannot wage
tom   (01.31.11)
war with Israel because they're too far away or too dirt-poor? Just like the "moderate islamists"- you are talking about an none-existing animal. There's only one Islam and there's only one Arab mind-set: that's why they have not produced anything even remotely approaching a democracy.
2. "Peace" with Egypt
Sharona ,   Jerusalem Israel   (01.31.11)
As a former resident of the US-Canada border I can tell you we NEVER had peace with Egypt. We had a state of non-war which is not the same thing at all. Everyone knows that after Mubarak the so-called "peace" treaty could become a worthless rag. Doesn't everyone in Israel know this????
3. People's Peace
eddie ,   london UK   (01.31.11)
The only way to having a real and lasting peace is for democracy to take hold of the dictatorships around the middle east. At the moment, there are 2 peace agreements with dictatorships. If a truly democratic regime takes hold in Egypt, then they need to worry about feeding their people, and may not have an interest in hostilities. And the same with the Palestinians. Hamas and PA are both dictatorships. They can be changed by other groups who take power. So land-for peace deal with PA will not last too long, and they might be toppled by another regime. If the people of Palestine want a peace, they can have it.
4. Peace is fragile
Brod ,   USA   (01.31.11)
Peace with fanatical Islamist-Jihadists is impossible. It does not exist. If Mubarak falls and the Army fails, the fanatical Islamist-Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood will take over Egypt. The Ayatollahists will dominate Egypt. The peace with Israel will be discarded. They will be on a warpath against Israel. And once again Israel will have to fight for its life to survive. Since 1973, the weaponry of the dark forces has become more sophisticated. Ergo, Israel must never hesitate to use its nukes once they shower Israel with rockets. Being showered by rockets is like being hit by nukes. All these developments would never have happened if America has a strong Judeo-Christian Conservative President. The dark forces took advantage of destabilizing the world when they saw a young, inexperienced and weak President in the WH. What is worst is that he has an Islamist background. So the dark forces think he is one of them. And they are emboldened to crusade their Jihadism/Terrorism in the region, America, Europe, Russia, Asia and all over the world. Once again they are putting their Saladin hats. Congress should wake up. It may be necessary to impeach the rookie President who has triggered all these developments because of: his irresponsible Cairo speech, crusading against Israel in his zealotry to help the Islamist-Jihadist fanatics usurp Judea and Samaria-Israel's liberated historic homeland-Land of Israel from the Jewish Nation, and being soft on Iran that has repeatedly threatened to vaporize Israel and is feverishly working on its nukes to accomplish its evil intention, and worsening America's economic recession with rising gas price, rising national debt, rising unemployment, etc. Additionally, Bin Laden and his thugs are still on the loose and sheltered by Pakistan. Islamist-Jihadist terrorism in America and the world is rising. All these are endangering America's national security. On this basis alone, Congress should and must impeach Hussien Obama. And national election should be held to elect a new President.
5. retake immediately sinai
jdk ,   nyc   (01.31.11)
Israel you have no choice but retake quickly the Sinai. You have only a piece of paper in your hand that is not worth even the ink on it. Israel can't sign anything with any muslem regime. The regime at any Muslim country or authority may seem moderate at time or signing but are they really representative of their people? It seems that it is not sustainable in the long run. Don't sign anything with palestinians either. And G-od will certainly help.
6. Yes but.........
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (01.31.11)
..even if a hostile regime takes hold it's not necessarily the end of the story. There's no real peace now anyway - a modus vivendi just like the one with Syria is probably enough meanwhile. Egypt has no territorial disputes with Israel, unlike Syria and that non-war situation has held for 44 years so far. The only time the Egyptians attacked Israel without legitimate reason was 44years ago in 1967 - in 1973 they wanted to get the Sinai back which they did by the peace treaty later on. Half of Egypt's economy is dependent on tourism and economic realations with the USA which would both be in jeopardy were they to go to war with Israel so it's not in their interest to do so.
7. the peace with Egypt wasn't signed with
ghostq   (01.31.11)
Mubarak, I think it only up to Egypt in this point if her hand in peace or not, after all the only person who actually benefit from this peace is Egypt, cause from what I know Israel didn't get much, if the peace anulled then I am preaty sure they put in a chapter that clain "what if" situation. all and all it is up to Egypt.
8. Peace with Egypt at risk? Duh!
Heather Czerniak ,   Mississauga, Canada   (01.31.11)
The folks behind the protests are Islamic extremists who already have it in for Israel. Why do they think the countries currently in upheaval happen to be Israel's neighbors? Why not Iran or Kuwait or Qatar or Saudi Arabia? It's well and obvious whats really about to happen and why.
9. So? What are we waiting for?
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.31.11)
Take back Sinai NOW, while Egyptian military forces are deployed to curb the rioting. Along the way, clean up Gaza, and send its denizens packing to Egypt. We knew sooner or later this was going to happen. It appears that it is sooner. WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR??
10. Should revolution take place?
Shmuel ,   Maale Adumim   (01.31.11)
what the heck do call this?
11. good cents
ezra ,   Israel   (01.31.11)
Hard to imagine that the Egyptian Army would willingly give up the billions of US$'s that supplies its equipment, spare parts and salaries. They will preserve the non-belligerence with Israel as long as the US keeps the $'s and materiel flowing to the Egyptian military.
12. ezra #11 too late
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (01.31.11)
US laws forbid the use of American military equipment to be used against their own civilian population. These laws apply to us and Egypt. Egypt has violated this law. The US Congress WILL not give Egypt anymore aid.
13. #12
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (01.31.11)
Don't underestimate Obama. I am surprised, did not expect it and don't understand it, but it seems that Obama is doing everything he can to establish the Islamic Republic of Egypt even though that would be a fatal blow to the American economy.
14. IF the peace agreement ends
dani   (01.31.11)
will it become a cold war like with syria? the US will no longer be able to supply egypt with aid if the agreement ends, because the aid is dependent on the agreement. egypt's armed forces will slowly decline. the country will likely do terribly economically. the main issue is the next 5-10 years while they still have modern weapons...after that, egypt will become a hollow rotting, poverty stricken country...more or less like a gigantic yemen. if they attempt a hot war, israel will have no choice but to retake sinai and level the country (ie blow up the aswan dam). the problem will be that iran and hezbollah will join. it will be like the 1960s all over again -- war on 2 or 3 fronts.
15. #8 and #9
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (01.31.11)
#8 - Tunisia and Yemen are not neighbours with Israel. Iran also had "elections" and then cancelled the results. #9 - Relax please Sarah with your rhetoric - would you want YOUR husband/son/father/brother/boyfriend to go on board a tank into the Sinai eh? Are you even in Israel by the way?
16. Peace with Egypt NOT at risk
Rami of NAzareth ,   Israel   (01.31.11)
Peace with Israel is a strategic egyption interest and change of leadership in egypt will not change it. Egyption people wants the regime out due to its opression , curruption and human rights abouse. not because of peace with Israel
17. Peace with any Arab country ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.31.11)
... lasts only as long as the ruler who signed the treaty remains in power. It is becoming increasingly evident that Mubarak will not remain in power. El Baradei -- an unlikely successor -- is a toadie of the mullahs in Iran. The good that will come of the brushfire that is sweeping through the Arab world is (i) Israel has the reason it needs to clean up Gaza and take back Sinai; and (ii) the Europeans now realize that Israel is the only stable entity in a vast sea of precarious Arab dictatorships I wonder how long it will be before Arabs and Moslems in Europe start to riot in support of their perceived brethren in the various Arab countries. I'm betting it won't take long at all.
18. To: No. 15
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.31.11)
All the male members of my family would serve proudly and with distinction. While you do what, drive a truck? Cook? You're just a jobnik -- and now everyone knows it.
19.  "Don't waste a good crisis" ...
michael redbourn ,   arad israel   (01.31.11)
If the Muslim Brotherhood takes over in Egypt one of the first things that it has vowed to do is to tear up the peace treaty with Israel. So Israeli leaders must already be thinking about retaking the Sinai Peninsular which was returned in exchange for the peace treaty. Retaking the Sinai would not be a problem militarily especially after what is taking place in Egypt right now, and it would give Israel a buffer with Egypt, oil, and would seal off arms that are getting to Gaza. Yep, like Rahm Emanuel says, "Don't waste a good crisis" ...
20. #5 - it's too early right now ..
michael redbourn ,   arad israel   (01.31.11)
The chances are good that Mubarak will overcome, and he wants to control the Muslim Brotherhood as much as Israel does. If Muslim extremists take over in Egypt and refuse to honor the peace treaty then that will be the time to retake the Sinai. Michael
21. Proof real peace comes through strength. Not concessions.
Chaim ,   Israel   (01.31.11)
Real peace comes through strength. Not concessions. That is why Israel's "peace treaty" with Egypt is now in doubt. It is based on Israeli concessions made decades ago. The Egyptian street couldn't care less about Israel's sacrafice. However, Israel was permanently weakened by ceding the immensely strategic, militarily and economically valuable Sinai. It makes war with Egypt far more likely than if Israel had kept Sinai. Israel should resolve never to cede our land again, under any conditions. Moreover, if heaven forbid, Israel is forced to fight another war, we must permanently keep all the land we win.
22. Boo Hoo Israel
Leon ,   Ottawa, Canada   (02.01.11)
Peace with Israel was based on oppression and collaberation with the US. Stability in the Middle East is a euphemism for Arab dictatorships where their people live in fear. As human beings we should be cheering the overthrow of a dictator. First Tunesia, then Egypt and onto Jordan, Morocco, Algeria and so on. May the Arab dictators be hanging from every pole. If Israel wants peace with their Arab neighbours, it must be based on justice.
23. #16 Rami, I beg to differ
Tahl ,   Ashdod   (02.01.11)
The vast majority of simple Egyptians have been poisoned by the virulently antisemitic Egyptian media for decades. They see Israel as pure evil, and see nothing positive coming for them from this peace, which they perceive, benefits only the elites close to Mubarak. I urge you also to look at an article published here yesterday, with a photo of a sign showing Mubarak with a Star of David painted on his forehead. As if he is an agent of the evil Jews. These people are the core supporters of the Muslim Brothers.
24. The Egyptian Army
Nahum Froumin ,   Ramat HaSharon Israe   (02.01.11)
"The Egyptian Army refuses to act against anti-government demonstrators" There's lots of comment about what the Army will/will not do. WHO is the UN-NAMED MAN behind the scenes quoted so much who is telling the ARMY what to do?
25. to #18
Shocked ,   Madrid, spain   (02.01.11)
Sarah B. Israel is at the enter of a dark labyrinth. 2003- U.S. just won the Iraq War,"moderates" are stronger, Iran is afraid and offers a great bargain. U.S. refuses the deal. 2011- Iran near Nuke bomb, Lebanon in hands of Hezbollah, Hamas in Gaza, Turkey is angry at Israel, Egypt is going to be Islamist. U.S. withdrew from Iraq and Obama is the most anti-israeli U.S. president. Good luck, you had the oportunity to make peace and you missed it. Now, we canĀ“t hear your complains.
26. #18
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (02.01.11)
You know absolutely nothing about me Sarah so cut the crap please. You are obviously in the USA spouting your nonsense. If you want to know then I am 55 already and when I was younger I was a combat medic in the IDF and I served many times in Gaza. My son is an officer in the IDF now and my daughter is an IDF invalid. I think you should apologize for your blatent rudeness.
27. #25
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (02.01.11)
What you are saying makes no sense. There was never a chance to make peace with the Arabs. In 2000, then-PM Ehud Barak surrendered to every demand made by PLO leader Arafat. Arafat could not believe that an Israeli leader would be so stupid, so he immediately rejected the offer and started the Second Oslo War hoping to get more concessions.
28. #25
Danny   (02.01.11)
In 2003, Iran and Syria were scared and so made some worthless offers to "talk" that they immediately retracted, just like North Korea does on a regular basis. Also Israel had just crushed the second Intifada which the "peace partners" had wholeheartedly participated in. The wheels will turn again. Hizbollah will provoke another war and crawl out from under the rubble to declare "victory" which idiot western media will parrot because it beats getting a real job. Ditto for Hamas. Expect some fake outrage from Turkey in the run up to an election that Erdogan is not a shoe-in to win and Obama will be gone in less than 24 months.
29. #22,thank god freedom still reigns in Iran,Lebanon and Syria
