2 possibilities : those 2 politicians are lying, or are blindly senile, one thing is sure with leaders like those I understand why Obama was elected and why the US lost its credibility.
33. Not Necessarily
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (02.28.11)
1. No real democracy has been set up in any Arab country, as yet. 2. There is no guarantee that the Arabs are capable of functioning in a democracy. The idea is new to them. 3. Democratically-elected Hamas has been no boon to Israel. Democracy is not always the best way to go. The assumption that the majority knows best (this being the basis of democracy) may not apply to the Arab societies where the masses are not as yet politically educated. Also, why is the US not demanding democracy in Saudi Arabia? But, that's an oil story.

Charlie ,   NYC   (02.28.11)
being crazy and rude is two strikes. So boubaleh, Rivka, my silly friend what's going to be your third strike? BTW I have it on good authority that the Israeli government doesn't check ELS they check the Torah, the Mishnah, the Talmud, sometimes Midrash and occassionally P.M. Mr. Netanyahu will have a look at Machivelli's The Prince, but, no, dear ELS just isn't on the Israeli government's reading list! LMAO @Rivkah!

As Mr Netanyahu says, democracies don't go to war with each other,so Mr McCain isn't telling us anything that we don't already know. But is he engaging in wishful thinking? So far,we've heard a lot of slogan shouting and calls for change leading to a couple of regimes ending, but no real indication of what the end result will be and what the people will be satisfied with. I have heard Egyptian protesters, when being interviewed, saying that they want democracy and,at the same time, saying that they think that democracy will make Egypt stronger to defeat Israel. This makes me very suspicious. I keep on asking myself whether the protesters really want democracy or whether they simply want to be LABELLED as democratic....look at me,I'm a democrat and have the printed t-shirt to prove it. Bearing in mind the young age of so many of the protesters, lack of experience in true democracy and their impressionability,it really worries me that they'll fall prey to a new lot of tyrants who know how to make the right noises but are anything but democratic. They would be even more dangerous than the previous regimes because they'd have popular support behind them. No reason for optimism, yet. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
44. #9; Chris, what are the other styles?
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (02.28.11)
For Instance with Hamas, one of your examples, it was the Arabs inexperience with democracy that caused Hamas to win , it was a false win for Hamas. While it wasn't discussed much at the time, here is what happened in that election. Fatah ran 2-3 candidates per area while Hamas only ran one candidate per area. The result was predictable, Fatah split their vote and Hamas won with a minority. Let me explain, if the 3 Fatah candidates each won 20% of the vote, Fatah won 60% of the total vote, but it was divided. While the one Hamas candidate won 40%, and won the election, even though 60% of the people supported Fatah. That happened because they just didn't understand how to handle democracy. The fact is, while Hamas probably has a lot of support (25%-35%), they would lose most elections and are not now or then the most popular group. They are considered brought and paid for by Iran. So while it isn't comforting that 1 out of 3 Arabs support a terrorist group like Hamas they would not win. But what kind of democracy do you think would work in that part of the world? I agree you must have a separation of church and state to start with.
