1. Religion the biggest killer of man kind
Avi ,   Israel   (03.08.11)
2. Don't trust them or the Pope
Yehoshua J1   (03.08.11)
After the war is over and the Pope has used the jews yet again, he will resend his certification. I agree with the author "global events in recent years that pertain to Islam and to Muslim states are taking us back in many ways to the Middle Ages"
3. Nonsense.
leo ,   usa   (03.08.11)
4.  xtianity is dying in the west
(03.08.11)
Christianity plays no role in public life in advanced western countries apart from the USA. Any opposition to Islam will have to be led by seculars . Christians are irrelevent.
5. #1 - the alternative to religion is what?
michael redbourn ,   Arad - Israel   (03.08.11)
"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." -- Albert Einstein Can you look at a flower and believe it "just happened" ? Or believe that elephants evolved from fish? etc
6. I think all Israelis and Palestinians have to live a year
Israeli   (03.08.11)
outside the region. to see that they are not the center of the universe and that the world does not work in the way they believe. Self-obsession and paranoia get us nowhere.
7. The author makes a suggestion, not a clear statement
Gobbo   (03.08.11)
This is the closest the author comes to telling us what he's getting at: "this headline is especially significant precisely at this time" and "the Pope’s statement may have greater importance than what it appears to have right now" Especially significant? Greater importance? What is the author driving at? He paints a dire picture of Islam overtaking Europe, warns of impending holy war, puts the Pope's outreach to Jews in that context, but doesn't commit himself to a clear conclusion. Is he trying to say that the Pope wants Jews and Christians to join forces against the Muslims? But why would billions of Catholics, who outnumber Muslims, require the assistance of a handful of Jews? And how influential could one papal pronouncement be in regards to erasing 2000 years of theological antagonism? I'll believe the author's theory when I see the Pope forcefully condem the enemies of Israel, especially Iran. I'll believe it when I see the Pope urge Christian Europe to fight back against the encroachment of Islam. I'll believe it when I see the Pope take a real risk and openly challenge the powers that be in the Muslim world.
8. To Michael#5. The Darwin Faith.
Maansingh ,   The Netherlands   (03.08.11)
Quote :” Or believe that elephants evolved from fish?” Or believe that humans evolved from monkeys. IF the Darwinists (i.e. followers of the Darwin faith) believe that -- that will mean they are believing a fairy-tale. It will mean they are seeing nipples on the neck of goats (meaning : their vision is WRONG).
9. this doesn't help
George ,   UK   (03.08.11)
This does not help to increase understanding about the Pope or about Islam. There is just no real information here, only speculation and sweeping generalisations.
10. #1 - WW1 & WW2 were not caused by religion!
michael peterson ,   LA - USA   (03.08.11)
The Russian revolution was not caused by religion etc The whole point of the article which seems to have caused you to have a knee-jerk reaction is that early wars were caused by religion, then weren't, but that the next one will be.
11. #5, Religion has nothing to do with science
Yossef   (03.08.11)
it is about society, rules, organization and moral behavior. The creation, Adam and Eva, etc. are all metaphors. Read Rambam.
12. Some good Talkbacks here.
Steve   (03.08.11)
I agree with the author, this (temporary or permanent) lifting of the charge of decide (killing god) against the Jews is welcome. But how can Pope Benedict XVI undue the incredible harm he did to Israel in the wording of his Synod on the Middle East late last year? Referring to Israel's enemies who are dedicated to her destruction, the Vatican inveighed against Israel: "Recourse to theological and biblical positions which use the Word of God to wrongly justify injustices is not acceptable." Injustices? Pope Benedict's leading Arch Bishop (Cyril Bustros) elaborated by declaring the Jews have no Biblical right to the land of Israel in the first instance and that since Jesus, the Jewish people are "no longer God's people," an incredible claim on its face; a claim without any justification whatsoever. Notwithstanding this gesture cited above, what I see is (a nominally) Christian Europe joining with Islam in its assault on Israel and the Jews, with the United States of America not far behind. The elevation of Barack Hussein Obama - a dedicated foe of Israel's - to the White House by the American voter is ominous. It does not portend good things for America's long-term future..
13. Rambam, a religious scientist, has nothing to do with #11
Thinking Jew ,   real world   (03.08.11)
14. #10 - of cvourse ww2 was caused by religion
oferdesade ,   israe   (03.08.11)
not the type u think, and annihilating the jews was certainly not the main thrust. but there's no difference between juaism/christianity/ islam saying everyone is wrong and deserves to die and the valkyries saying that germans are superior and everyone else is a slave (didnt a rabbi say that not too long ago? http://www.jpost.com/JewishWorld/JewishNews/Article.aspx?id=191782). paganism is a religion too.
15. Islam vs the world
citizen   (03.08.11)
The war has already begun, how it will end will depend on the strenght of all free men and women who will fight back - not in the name of any religion but for the sake of ensuring that humanity remains free of the yoke of evil men who, in the name of their religion are working relentlessly to subjugate the human race.
16. Correction
Steve ,   Canmer, KY   (03.08.11)
The statement that Christianity has hated Jews for 2,000 years is patently false, unless you replace Christianity with Catholicism. True Christians (not the religious carrying the title), know where we would be without them, and recognize that God has placed a special love on Israel.
17. Thyatira tolerates Jezebel
Annmarie ,   USA   (03.08.11)
"...the Pope’s words are significant. Billions view him as an authority." Please don't confuse Roman/Latin catholicism with Bible believing Christianity. The pope is NOT an authority & G-d did NOT ordain him or his false "priests". He does look maahvelous, though. I wonder who does his embalming? The Time of Jacob's Trouble is drawing near...
18. The Pope is not a Christian
Tom ,   Rockledge, USA   (03.08.11)
It's horribly sad what Catholics have done under the banner of Christianity. Catholicism is a pagan religion with only a hint of true Christianity. The Catholic church does not stand for Jesus Christ. Anyone who hates Jews is against God!
19. #16 Correction: ALL Christians originate fm Roman Catholics
Israeli Jew ,   Israel   (03.08.11)
If you're different, it's you who isn't Christian. Catholics are Christian from the beginning of the Church.
20. I don't see the connection
Misha ,   Tel Aviv   (03.08.11)
between the Pope's exoneration of the Jews for deicide and the danger to Israel by such a decision. What have the Muslims got to do with it? I have enormous respect for Mr. Rath but he has lost me here.
21. #13, yeap, but as a jewish scientist
Yossef   (03.08.11)
I have something to do with Rambam. Read the introduction to מורה נבוחים, at least.
22. What is Christianity ?
Yossef   (03.08.11)
Christianity is a simplification of greek mythology, the number of gods is reduced to one (a representation of Zeus), and also the number of half-god, Jesus, the son of Zeus and of a Earthling called Mariam (in hebrew: a drop of sea). Christianity as invented by a greek, Saul/Paul, is just another kind of greek paganism.
23. Comment from #1
Martin Riley ,   Canada   (03.08.11)
Religion makes almost all of Christinaity support Israel in these times of trouble. As for religion itself, I disagree with you Avi. Your statement to broad based. I would suggest that unless the religion itself teaches to kill, it is mostly manipulation of religion by evil men, that results in evil things.
24. The Pope is indeed Christian
Michael a. Crognale ,   Fort Worth, TX   (03.08.11)
He is the direct descendent of Peter who was selected by Jesus Himself to lead and build his church. The Roman Catholic Church is the ONLY true Christian Church in existence. All other christian 'religions' are pale imitations at best. The Cathloic Church is the only true path to salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus through His death and Resurrection. Sorry to burst you bigot bubble there bubba.
25. Generous gesture from the Pope
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (03.08.11)
It only came after millions of Jews were killed because of false accusation's against us Thanks for nothing, instead of forgiving, apologize for the Spanish Inquisition, Pogroms, etc.
26. #1 wrong
Jon ,   United States of America   (03.08.11)
Sorry #1, religion is not the biggest killer. Leftists have killed more than all the religious wars combined. Mao's red revolution killed 50 million. Stalin's communist takeover killed 20 million. Hitler's national socialist workers party exterminated 13 million lives.
27. religion biggest killer
william ,   lake charles, usa   (03.08.11)
wrong, avi, that would be communism. unless you consider communism a religion
28. #19 Israeli Jew
Rob ,   America   (03.08.11)
Hopefully, you know more about your own religion - Catholic is not synonymous with Christian. The Eastern Orthodox church is just as ancient as the R.C.; also it had more apostolic Sees than merely Rome. Furthermore, Catholic theology branched off, having teachings no other church recognizes (purgatory, papal infallibility, enforced clerical celibacy, etc.).
29. pretext of the article
William Smith ,   MARIETTA, GA USA   (03.08.11)
Anyone who has ever attended mass and recited the Nicene Creed knows that Christ died by the hands of Pontius Pilate and the Romans. Hence, Disciple Peter went to Rome to fight them at their core by establishing the Church there.....This knowledge as Christian teachings date from the Council of Nicea about 310 A.D. try to stick to the facts, OK?
30. The missing link
Greg ,   Fort Worth, Texas   (03.08.11)
The one factor missing from your article is that there is quite a distinction between Roman Catholicism and Evangelical Protestantism. Most evangelicals desire only good for Israel and the Jews because they regard them as God's special people through whom the remainder of the world has been blessed. So, all this to say that you have a great many allies around the world who see Islam as a threat.
