1. Wonder if this was cooperation with PA
William ,   Israel   (03.20.11)
I can't imagine what's so special about the Gaza plant that Israel would need to interrogate this guy about it. He was high up in Hamas so there must be much more to the story than the claim of disabling the Gaza plant. After all, stopping petrol to the plant would accomplish this in a short time. I think his value is as a Hamas member, and it may be a cooperation with the PA to bring this guy in leading up to the PA crackdown on Hamas and so-called reconciliation efforts.
2. #1 like hello! Hamas is holding Shalit! can u say trade?
Tahl   (03.20.11)
like Dude his value is to be a pawn in trade deal for our soldier Gilad Ben-Aviv Shalit. Like Dude what rock have you been hiding under?
3. Heart? Brain? or turd?
Arthur ,   SF, CA   (03.20.11)
4. Well THAT completes the set.
Gideon Reader ,   USA   (03.20.11)
To those who I denigrated and poked ridicule at, I sincerely do sincerely apoligize. Now to the reason why Israel would want the tsures and expense of bagging a lowly power plant engineer, in order to cut off power to Gaza, when a sisngle IAF flight could perform the same task at less risk and cost. Who is this target and what does he know? THAT is the interesting "money" part of the story that is yet to unfold.
5. Now it's funny!
Keren ,   IL-BR   (03.20.11)
Now, things become being funny! Please, keep him and do not give news about him to his family. Every 4 years, eventually, send a video to his little daughter to take a look of his captive father ,along with her brothers and mother. Keep him in an underground sell ,without day light and do not let Red Cross to see him. I want to see UN complaining now.I really want. Eye for eye;teeth for teeth! That's how things work with a certain kind of people.
6. so now the deal is 1001 for Shalit back! Do we have a deal?
Joe Black ,   NYC baby   (03.20.11)
7. #1
Shmuel ,   Au   (03.20.11)
hmm very different from your posts along with Ben J. Sarah B Marl fro wherever ( not that you folks know each other or anything) What is the back up plan when the Itamar investigation (remember that one?) probably shows it was not carried out by pals..
8. "Ukrainian wife"
Genuine Tosefta ,   Tveria   (03.20.11)
It means the guy has Arab wives too.
9. the plant is still running just fine
walt kovacs ,   los angeles, usa   (03.20.11)
so his abduction has nothing to do with that....but it really is time for israel to cease with the gag orders....all this one did is to make richard silverstein into a hero for leaking intel about the arrest.
10. Bunkers need electricity, too...
Adam ,   Israel   (03.20.11)
I'm guessing he was aware of any projects to build underground facilities as electrical would be needed. Perhaps he knows where the Hamas leadership's hiding spots are...
11. Act of piracy
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (03.20.11)
Kidnapping a Palestinian civilian power plant engineer from Gaza, who was in the Ukraine to apply for Ukranian citizenship on account of his marriage to his Ukranian wife, is in my mind an act of piracy, which pretty much underlines Israel's status as an international pariah.
12. Well I'm stimied. What would we want with Him?
rebecca ,   Modiin   (03.20.11)
13. Methinks maybe he knows something about Hamas?
Scott ,   USA   (03.20.11)
14. Release Gilad Schalit first!
manicdrummer ,   Madison, USA   (03.20.11)
Otherwise, fair is fair.
15. Alof
IZL   (03.20.11)
Key word, in your mind. In my mind no country should starve, everyone should be happy, and diseases should not exist, of course in my mind.
16. Or maybe bigger and better package
Kareem ,   Nola   (03.20.11)
17. Can Palestinians go after that .. also?
Samy ,   Palestine   (03.20.11)
18. # 15 IZL Not only in my mind!
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (03.20.11)
I wonder what the Ukranian government thinks of this matter; kidnapping a foregn national in the sovereign territory of nation. that has full diplomatic relations with Israel? If I would be a Ukranian government official I would be pretty furious. The Ukranian prime minister Nikolai Azarov, who btw. is currently visiting Israel, expressed himself very diplomatically, when asked about the affair. "I don't want to imagine that such things are carried out on the soil of a friendly state". We know that it is not the first time that the Mossad has been engaged in criminal activities. Ask the Irish, German and British governements for starters!!
19. #11 Anything in the Alofs mind about Gilad Shalit??
Phil ,   Ireland   (03.20.11)
Or perhaps it's just too narrow and single tracked in there for any honest thinking.
20. to nr. 11.
universe-citizen ,   planet earth/world   (03.21.11)
i almost agree with you. to speak about a pariah-state i cannot quite follow. i think it is better to speak about a pariah government/regime. we cannot generalize an entire country/people, that everyone thinks the same, has the same opinion, acts the same. people are not programmed and are no robots.
21. Outrageous!
Uncle Sam   (03.20.11)
I guess it's now OK to kidnap any Isreali anywhere.
22. The whole thing is one big misunderstanding..
Israeli hasbara   (03.21.11)
He applied for birthright tour and the world think we kidnapped him..
23. may be the Palestinian engineer bilding the tunnels in Gaza.
ROSENVALD ,   BRASIL   (03.21.11)
May Be he nows here is the most importants tunel thet guns come from Egipth to Gaza.
24. I care only about Arab Terrorist prisoners held by Israel
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (03.21.11)
Jewish soldiers are none of my concern because of my Antisemitic believes. I have been brainwashed in my childhood by parents and in adulthood by Islamic propaganda. Now, no one can change my mind and any patient of the mosaic faith coming to my office better beware of my medical methods. Dr. Ben Alofs Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital
25. Shalit is safe undergroung...
seadog1946 ,   ArthurKill, NJ   (03.21.11)
in an abondoned smugglers tunnel under the Gaza/Egypt border.
26. #7 Shmuel If Not The
Brazen   (03.20.11)
pali's then who?
27. Shalit for the Engineer
Ron ,   OC, US   (03.21.11)
Israel could easily bomb the plant if that is what they want to do. No need for the Engineer to do that. Now a prisoner trade is another matter. Speculation on my part...
28. It looks like Ukranian authorities fully cooperated.
Anna ,   Montreal, Canada   (03.21.11)
You can't just bring to the airport handcuffed man without any proper papers and agreements. He's situation incomparable to Shalit's. First of all he has a lawyer. He had a chance to communicate with his family, and his location is known to the interested persons. The Israeli and Ukrainian authorities are both concealing the information on the circumstances of this unusual incident.
29. #2 - Even if Haniyeh's mother was in prison...
William ,   Israel   (03.21.11)
Hamas would still not trade for Shalit knowing that without him as their human shield, they would be toast. This man is nothing. For a rightful trade for Shalit, we need a few Hamas leaders captured, thrown in a deep dungeon, and flaunted periodically.
30. #21 - not really. He is Hamas and Hamas is at war with IL
William ,   Israel   (03.21.11)
SO in a war situation, a member of the ruling party or in this case a terrorist group which has declared war on a sovereign nation and is considered a terrorist group by a majority of nations, can be considered a target for arrest. Which means, in relation, Al-Qaeda can kidnap any member of the US govt (even govt employees) because of those conditions...and they do. And the US arrests many members of Taliban and Al-Qaeda as well. Welcome to war, Uncle Sam!
