They abstained from endorsing military intervention in Libya, but did not vote against it or vetoed it. So, the U.N. resolution is being implemented and Putin should let the resolution prove itself, let it stand. This is why all those representatives took the time to debate it before voting. If you don't like this resolution, Russia, put in a new resolution proposal for a debate at the U.N.. Democracy is slow, cumbersome, imperfect, but it is better than the decrees of Mr. Putin made on a moment's notice and usually oppressive. He has the old mind of a dictator. When, oh when, will new leadership come to power in Russia? I think Putin will want to beat the staying in power ability that Gaddafi demonstrated. Putin is a competitive dude.

We don't know how long Gaddafi will be able to hold out for. He doesn't even have the option to walk away otherwise he will be put up in front of the ICC. If Gaddafi can hold out for months will the west be willing to spend alot of money keeping their forces in place to enforce a no fly zone? In two days hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on Tomohawk missiles and other operations. Is the west now going to take an active role in helping out the rebels? There should have never been any no fly / attack zone like this. The US could have sent in some B2s destroyed hims airbases and then left the rest to the Libyans because its their civil war. The ideal solution would have been to create some kind of end in the violence and allow Gaddafi to continue running the country but behind the scenes hold talks with his sons. Do deals with the sons that when Gaddafi dies if they inherit power then make reforms to create an orderly transition to a democracy. The sons are not as crazy as their father. Right now even if Gaddafi does go this is not Egypt, there is no army to unite the country and not everybody even wants democracy. There will probably be a civil war which will mean more violence and instability and the only way the west will be able to do anything about an all out civil war involves putting men on the ground which isn't an option. Obama doesn't know what to do about this. He is desperate for the US to be seen as staying out of it but in reality the US is the only one with the hardware. The British government is run mostly by younger people who have no experience of frontline politics and are acting to gung ho Sarkozy sees this as his attempt to make a name for himself ... France leading the way in the crusade to topple Gaddafi. They are like a bunch of headless chickens

...except that the UN resolution that the Chinese and Russians abstained on was to impose a no fly zone in order to protect civilians. Obama's forces immediately violated the UN resolution and international law by taking an active part in anti-government warfare, trying to assassinate Libyan leaders, attacking the Libyan ground forces and assisting the "rebel" forces in a counter attack. Legally speaking what Obama did is the same as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor or the German attack on Poland. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.

The moral of the story is that if you are the United States (or Israel, for that matter) you cannot win, so do that which is best for the United States (or, as the case may be, Israel). Speaking exclusively for myself, the Europeans will haul ass out of Libya any moment now (it's what they do oh so well), claiming the opposition of their large assorted and very vocal Moslem and Arab minorities, leaving the United States to shoulder the entire burden. The mess in Libya has the potential to be far worse than even the Vietnam show. While the U.S. has humanitarian concerns, I don't really think that American servicemen and women should die to further the cause of total anarchy in Libya (never fear; that's coming -- all 130 tribes worth). The Europeans are the ones who import Libyan oil. Let them handle it, not slink off into a corner after conning the U.S. into entering the fray. It seems the U.S. never learns. Dump this one smack dab into Europe's lap -- if they want Libyan oil, let them fix what's wrong with Libya. And don't let the Euroweenies con the U.S. into making this a "NATO" effort. We all know that's Eurospeak for 90% U.S. effort. Let the Europeans handle all the expenses, too. And this one is going to get VERY expensive.
