The US should stop all military aid period and end of story. We are broke and can't afford it anymore. No more aid, America needs to spend on our infrastructure, teachers etc. We spend more money on defense than almost all countries in the world combined. That is enough money to feed our Military industrial complex.

The US foreign aid budget is about 1/2 of 1% of our total annual budget, and most of it is required to be spent on US products. That means the money comes right back here to the US and creates jobs in science, R&D and manufacturing. So, eliminating foreign aid would not change our budget by any meaningful amount, and would harm our economy. But even more importantly, foreign aid -if used correctly - has the capability to prevent wars from starting before they happen. Wars tend to be a lot more expensive than aid. One can argue about whether it is always spent strategically but the point is, foreign aid is not intended to be charity, it is intended as strategy.

The standard rifle used by the Lebanese army is the M16 but the one they are carrying in the picture is a sub machine gun made in Belgium I would love to know who the US think the Lebanese armed forces will be using anti tank missiles against? I didn't realize Hizbollah operated tanks they might need to destroy. With or without anti tank missiles the Lebanese army is still no match for anybody so giving them equipment like this will be no use if Syria invaded. Obama did block a request by Israel to buy some Apaches on the grounds that they might be a threat to the palestinians. Maybe he wants the Lebanese military to have the hardware to destroy Israeli tanks .. that would be inline with Obama anti Israel logic.

Military aid is generally good for the economy because it does create a dependence on US weapons which buys the US political influence. There are also all kinds of strings attached like the bulk of the recipients military imposts must be American. So cant use the US aid then buy everything else from Europe. Without the military aid US influence over Israel would be a tiny fraction of what it is today. Its almost like taking drugs because it creates a dependency and there is only one supplier. So military aid short term costs the government money but it goes straight to US arms manufacturers it never leaves the country but it brings in more long term through exports. As for the Lebanese situation its not helping the economy because its mostly things like surplus Patton tanks and M113 APCS which come from the army stores so there is no economic advantages to selling surplus.

Military aid is in reality an investment as far as the US is concerned. Financially its an unofficial subsidy to the US arms manufacturers and the arms trade is expensive but legally the government is not allowed to subsidize these companies. The money never leaves the country, it is used by the arms companies to create jobs and the company and employees pay taxes which goes back to the government. Israel is planning to build its new Namer APC which is based on the Merkava hull. So production of Merkava hulls can be dedicated to the tanks and so the Namer can be paid for with military aid a new plant is being built in the US to build the Namer. That means lots more US jobs. There are also all kinds of conditions attached to military aid like the country receiving the military aid must by the most of its military imports from the US. Israel is not allowed to spend the aid money in the US get a freebee and then go and spend the Israeli taxpayer money on buying European. We must spend a minimum amount of our own money in the US which again ands up back in the pockets of the government. Military aid also buys political influence because if the country says no then the US can threaten to withhold weapons supplies. Without military aid US political influence in Israel would be much less than it is. It also stifles competition we saw that with the Lavi. Israel wanted the Lavi US muscled in politically and then offered the F16 at a favorable price and the F16 so a jet Israel could have one day exported to compete with the F16 ended up on the chopping block Lockheed Martin made billions from the F16. Already Israeli companies are questioning if its worth developing a next generation air - air missile because the IAF hasn't used them in combat for a long time and they can buy American missiles with aid. So maybe US aid muscle Israel out of another area of arms manufacturing. That means not just Israel buying more but foreign customers no longer being able to buy Israeli so they look to the US. The US gains much more from military aid than is looses.

The Lebanese army is a third rate force with outdated US weapons that don't pose any threat against Israel. If anything they would pose as targets for Israeli helicopter gunships. Lebanon should get their weapons and training from Iran.

If Lebanon would be so well off WITHOUT U.S. arms, then WHY were they so eager to get them!!!??? In case you haven't noticed, U.S. ARMS have defeated every OTHER countries arms in the modern era. Please show me just ONE country that used Soviet/Chinese arms that hasn't been defeated by U.S. arms!!! Israel takes what the U.S. arms produces and makes it better, with the exception of the Merkava tank which is made in Israel, and they have proven the superiority of U.S. arms in every one of their conflicts with the Arabs. Yeah, Lebenon needs more Soviet/Chinese/Iran arms like they need Hezbollah!!! Go for it!!!
