1. "dozens of masorati"
yoni ,   tel aviv   (04.08.11)
In a state of millions of Jews the dozens of conservative and reform Jews are insignificant and do not deserve to split our nation even more than it is already. The fact is that the reform movement is just one step behind christianity and the conservative movement is one step behind reform. The Jewish nation will survive but as we see now the reform movement is dwindling and has no ground to stand on. Majority of reforms are not Jewish and they continue to promote intermarriage and abolishment of Jewish thought, philosophy and values. I am for banning reform from Israel to protect the future of the Jewish nation from the decline we see in the US
2. #1 Absolutely right
Baily ,   USA   (04.08.11)
Also; they are always siding with anti Israel activity abroad
3. 2 Thumbs up to #1
Harry ,   Jerusalem   (04.08.11)
It is amazing how far these people will go. Wasn't enough damage done in the USA to our brothers. Moses came down from Sinai with ONE Torah to ONE PEOPLE, who all observed together. Observe or do observe. Why this made up religion. What is constant hammering of "streams of Judaism". Don't we have enough lies to live with. ONE GOD - ONE TORAH. Religion doesn't have any freedoms. That is your delusional problem. Creating the "FEEL GOOD" religion. Either you except the Torah in its Fullest, or you don't. Don't bring here, your made up way of life and yet call it Judaism.
4. Priests and imams
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (04.08.11)
There are more non-Jewish Russians and Arab Druse in the IDF than "reform" and "masorti" and they should also have their own chaplains.
5. #1 and #3
solomon ,   bklyn   (04.08.11)
Thank you for proving the truth of the article. "Religion doesn't have any freedoms"? G-d gives us freedom to decide for a reason. The bottom line is how you behave towards your fellow human beings. You do not get to decide "who is a Jew". This was attempted in WW2 and we don't want to talk about that.
6. select the best
a ash ,   tel aviv   (04.08.11)
thge best are mostly from the kippah wearing person . not afraid to sign up .
7. #1,2, 3
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (04.08.11)
Yes, well, when you frummies are supplying the army with as many young men and women as are the secular Jews and those from liberal denominations - they you'll be entitled to an opinion.
8. Enforcing orthodoxy with the power of the state...
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (04.08.11)
is an insane idea which the rest of the world is dicarding while Israel clings to it. Why shouldn't there be rabbis who will cater to their own congregation's brand of Judaism? Or are you saying that these aren't 'real Jews'. If that is your argument, then why should you beg these groups for money or political favor? Why not bar them from military service altogether?
9. How about a non-jewish rabbi?
Alfie Knowkes ,   Golan   (04.08.11)
10. Political
AJB   (04.08.11)
They are nothing but political movements as proved compeltely by this.
11. Which page in Gemara
Shalom ,   Ashdod, Israel   (04.08.11)
Somebody please tell me which page of Gemara has these terms; Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Unitarian etc The bottom line is we either have Jews who behave like Jews and keep ALL the Halachot or we have a bunch of yoyos who pick and choose which Halacha to keep based on stupid terms that bear no relation to Jews or the Hebrew language. Why don't these people "invent" their own religion and leave us alone and go live in Iceland or any other place that is not too far from Hell. I am sure the Pope and the Catholic religion will welcome them with open arms.
12. "Appoint non-orthodox rabbi" might as well appoint a priest.
Shabbat Shalom   (04.08.11)
13. Pluralism
Bryan Bridges ,   New York, NY   (04.08.11)
Does living in Israel make you insensitive to the values of religious pluralism for which Jews have fought so hard in the Diaspora? If the US Army were to declare that they only offered chaplains and services from one branch of Christianity, people would be up in arms. Support pluralism. Maybe one of the reasons so many Israelis consider themselves secular is that with Orthodoxy it's all or nothing. Wouldn't it be better to have people actively observe mitzvot at a level consistent with their values and beliefs or to completely reject a system they don't believe in?
14. Orthodox quantity in IDF?
Tzedek ,   Tel Aviv   (04.09.11)
When the Orthodox wing start supplying enough young men and women into the IDF then they can have an opinion. Until then keep hush!
15. Be real
Shimon ,   SW USA   (04.09.11)
I'm not sure what the problem is with those of you who don't recognize the truth, that Judaism has always been an evolving (aka reforming) religion. Moshe Rabbeinu would not recognize any of today's Jews or Jewish practices as anything that he was familiar with. Even those from as little as 1,000 years ago wouldn't recognize much of what we today call Judaism.
16. Re: #12 Appointing a priest
Mikey ,   SomeWhere OverHere   (04.09.11)
There are, as a matter of fact, quite a number of Christians who serve honorably in the IDF (Druze and Muslims too). These Christian IDF soldiers (some of who are Russian immigrants who came with Jewish or partially Jewish family members, some of whom are Christian Arabs) surely deserve religious representation in a Jewish army.
17. Disgusted
American Jew   (04.09.11)
Worse than the bias of government policy against non orthodox Jews is the Sinat chinam of the respondents to this article. Reform and Conservative rabbis have smicha from rabbinic lineages going back to Talmudic times and are as legitimate as any other Rabbis. Of course they were all absent from the sheiur where it was taught that good Jews must dress as 16th century polish nobles and chickens should be waved around ones head as a prelude to tshuva.
18. #1, #13 "Reform" dying b/c it's watered-down Judaism
Sue ,   Los Angeles   (04.09.11)
I'm an ex-Reform Jew who agrees with yoni #1. I have witnessed in America the decline of the Reform, Progressive and Conservative movements because of their watering down and/or complete rejection of our thousands-of-years-old religious traditions, embrace of intermarriage and involvement in leftist politics. A few years ago, the Reforms were losing so many members, they ran newspaper ads to entice gentiles to convert (proselytizing is unheard of in Judaism). Compare that with my little Chabad (Orthodox) synagogue that is bursting at the seams with mostly young members, many of whom were formerly Reform or completely non-practicing. While the Reform Jews are intermarrying themselves out of existence and putting up their Xmas trees, the Orthodox community is growing because these young Jews want to celebrate authentic Judaism.
19. #18 sue
solomon ,   bklyn   (04.09.11)
I am happy young Jews want to celebrate authentic Judaism as they deem it to be. But is there any authentic Judaism, when the ashkenaz trash the sephardic? Let's not mention the myriad streams of Judaism throughout the world. The only stream our Founding Patriarchs and Matriarchs would recognize are the Karaites; those that you would probably disparage. So there ain't no such animal as 'authentic'! There is also the point that each individual in the IDF deserves to be able to speak with a chaplain of his/her choosing, be it another stream of Judaism, Christianity, Druze, etc. These soldiers may die for Israel (Chas v'shalom!) and you are dictating to them about their religious practice? Chutzpah.

Harry ,   Jerusalem   (04.09.11)
It is always interesting to notice that people like you never fully understand an article and yet blur out a feedback, that has nothing to do with other responses. Be secular. No one was talking about who serves in the army. The point was, that Torah Judaism is JUDAISM period. Those who wish to water down the Torah to resemble, other religions, do so, I can't stop you, but don't call it "streams of Judaism". Our strong unbroken link from Sinai will remain, no matter what you perverters of Judaism try to do.
21. 50% combat soldiers orthodox
yoni ,   tel aviv   (04.09.11)
fact is that only religious Jews have any real reason to be motivated to fight for the land of Israel. Yes you can say that every country has patriotic soldiers but the orthodox have a real life purpose with a spiritual goal and a much larger grasp of the meaning of the fate of the Jewish people and homeland. stats are about 50% of all combat soldiers in IDF are orthodox, 35% commanders holding captain rank are orthodox and 22% of all officers appointed are orthodox. BTW Tel Aviv as a rule has the lowest percentage of combat soldiers and the lowest voting rate. I wonder why
22. Who's not proselytizing?
Hineni ,   Chicago, USA   (04.10.11)
Chabad is the most successful proselytizing organization in the history of Judaism, and this Chabad convert/ idiot has the chutzpa to criticize others for doing so? As fast as Chabad suckers in young members, that's how fast frummies at the other end are going off the derech. The Orthodox movement is only growing because they breed like guinea pigs. The non-Orthodox movements are the largest force in American Judaism, and it's they who have made it possible for the costume-party Jews to continue to exist.
23. Diversity in Israel
byado18 ,   Illinois, USA   (04.10.11)
It seems like it is time to realize that there is more than one way to be Jewish, both in Israel and in the diaspora! Progressive Judaism is growing in Israel and all in the military need to know that they are supported !
24. Reform and Conservative
Jew ,   Israel   (04.11.11)
and others like them are dying off, assimilating and intermarrying out and birthcontrolling themselves out of existence. Soon only the Orthodox will be Jews in the Galut. The others will all disappear.
25. Reform
(04.11.11)
Most Reforms, even if they themselves are married to other Jews, have children and grandchildren who married out. The saying is that there is no 4th generation Reform. Their descendants are either non-Jewish or else became Orthodox.
26. non-orthodox rabbi in the army
sas ,   israel   (04.11.11)
a VERY good idea.
27. orthodoxy
Miriam Brandes ,   Miami, Florida   (01.26.12)
Why are the religious jews NOT SERVING IN THE ARMY????????
28. Support for the Voice of Other Jews
Fran Gordon ,   Beachwood, Ohio   (01.30.12)
I am so encouraged by the determination of Jews Other than Orthodox (OTO - sound it out, means "same", doesn't it?) in Israel to demand that their spiritual needs be met as well. 21st Century Zionism is about lending support to these Voices that are working to make a better modern Jewish Democracy.
