"Germany is dedicated to the security of the Jewish state, founded in the wake of the Holocaust. Merkel has championed an international campaign to rein in Iran's contentious nuclear program, which Israelis consider a potentially mortal threat." odd that an israeli paper should be reprinting such anti-israeli spin. could it be that israel's legitimacy, and germany's support, are founded on more than just guilt for the holocaust? the jewish homeland was an independent kingdom 2,5000 years ago. and germany has political and economic interests in the middle east, besides israel. (and germany's "dedication to the security of the jewish state" never stopped them from selling chemical weapons materials to saddam hussein, for example.) and iran's "contentious nuclear program" isn't only a threat to israel, but to every country within range of iran's ballistic missiles (including germany). and it isn't the nuclear program which is dangerous, but the uranium enrichment, which has little or no commercial value to iran, but enables them to make nuclear bombs. as for germany's "championship", it has done nothing to stop the enrichment program, but it has been most effective at blocking any and all israeli military response. (in effect, germany has created the need for this 6th attack submarine.) trust reuters never to miss an opportunity to spin a story against israel.
3. Embargo YES!!
petr vojta ,   prag   (04.06.11)
Exporting weapons to crisis areas is highly irresponsible. Giving weapons to places, which have no define borders, is against the law. Monster regime behind control with illegal WMD is already "nightmare" for humanity as world will have to start to deal with this "colonial enterprice project" witch went horribly wrong. Embargo YES, new weapons definitely NO!!! petr czech

they stole from the Jews before and during the Holocaust, let them pay for this sub and a few more. How about bibi using some of the money that we have. fischer buys dollars to prop up the dollar. Use some of it for new F-35s,Iron Dome batteries and more armor and artillery.Buy more F-15I and F-16I as well as Apache Longbows for delivery sooner than the F-35s. We have to make sure I.D.F. stock piles are increased and the home front has all the supplies it needs. Tax all those that never served in the I.D.F.Use the money we have already!
5. the navy does need some investment
zionist forever   (04.06.11)
It needs new surface ships because the most advanced boats the SAAR 5 are approaching midlife and so the SAAR 4 are even older than that. The first three Dolphins are also slowly approaching midlife They were going to buy American but they were to expensive now they want German ships and a sub at a discount. Unfortunately somebody forgot to remind Bibi than Germany is bailing out most of the eurozone to stop the euro collapsing. I hope Germany agrees to offer a subsidized sub and if possibly ships as well but I can certainly understand why they don't want to. As for the other two subs awaiting delivery. They were delivered to Israel in 2009. They are currently getting Israeli modifications made because Israel has modified all the subs so they can carry nukes and have Israeli systems installed.

There is nothing wrong with Bibi & Peres scrounging for new toys. Their job is getting the best deal for Israel not can Germany of the US afford to give. At the end of the day its for the governments who make all these toys to make the final decision. If you want to buy something but its to expensive you can ask the store owner to give you a discount and they will either say yes or no.

As the Jews were the first people in Israel, thousands of years ago, the only "colonial enterprise project" I can think of is "Palestine", Gaza and most of the arab countries. You are right: they should not get weapons as they would use them for annihilation. Question: What would happen if the arabs put down their arms? Israel would rejoice, nothing more. And if Israel would put down its arms? The arabs would attack and try to annihilate the country and it's people, down to the infants. Yes you are right; the arab regimes are monstrous!
10. @ 7 - If you want to buy something but its to expensive ,...

You can do that once and may even get it but don't do that for the rest of your life - If you want to shop at Gucci get a job that will provide for your life style or stick to Walmart ,...
11. Discount?
Marco ,   Spain   (04.06.11)
I wonder if the discounted amount will go to the Israeli treasury or to Bibi's deep pocket as was the case with the double billing for airline tickets????
12. There comes Bibi, shnorring again
Sebastian ,   Bremen Germany   (04.06.11)
Germany should maintain good relations and ties to Iran, and should sell the subs to Iran instead to Israel. At least the Iranians are reliable trading partners and pay for what they buy, in contrast to Israel.

Iran will pay for your subs...and then blow you up with them. Good decision.
14. Will the Yanks have to finance this purchase?
Cameron ,   USA   (04.07.11)

solomon ,   bklyn   (04.07.11)
No. We Yanks finance stuff for Israel, but the stuff is built here in the US. This provides many, much needed jobs; great for the economy.
16. If you can get her on a discount
Ypip ,   Canada   (04.07.11)
I promise you she will be the steamer punk of the seas.
17. #15 Solomon bklyn
Marco ,   Spain   (04.07.11)
In that case Solomon, I suggest that the U.S finance Hezbollah too with stuff built in the U.S... This provides many mush needed jobs and will be great for the economy...
18. #17 Marco
solomon ,   bklyn   (04.07.11)
Minor detail: The US does believe in right and wrong. In this case it's very clear. Hezbollah threatens Israel and hides behind it's own people. It is already financed by Iran, which threatens the world. Israel is defending itself against possible annihilation. A confrontation begun by Hezbollah, Hamas, etc. "Details" you ignore as usual.
19. AGREE with #4, #2 -Germany built with Jewish blood, U.S. aid
Abraham ben Jacob ,   Canada   (05.06.11)
Germany used free , " 100 percent discounted " Jewish slave labor to help build up Germany during WW2. The Jews were starved, and then were paid by being murdered. After the War, the U.S. poured money and personnel and materials to again build up Germany.
20. Germany took U.S. aid, and was saved from the USSR
Abraham ben Jacob ,   Canada   (05.06.11)
How about Germans showing some gratitude and generosity......... The Germans themselves accepted generous U.S. aid after WW2 and were saved as a country from enslavement by the USSR.
21. split, sebastion, marco : three anti -semites with no shame
Abraham ben Jacob ,   Canada   (05.06.11)
And without even a tiny miniscule of knowledge or understanding of what they speak of.
