1. Madness
John ,   Tel-Aviv   (04.15.11)
He's nuts. It means an Arab owner will have to ask - are you Jewish before selling hametz to a customer, nad if the answer is positive - decline to sell it. Which situation will it put the Arabs? They may be accused of racism, and what about Jews who DO want to buy bread? What of hearing the refusal they will sue the Arab onwer on rasicm grounds? Does this rabbi think this is Saudi Arabia or Iran?
2. Chametz on Passover
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (04.15.11)
Not to worry - most of us have already supplied our freezers with bread enough for the whole week of Passover. You should have seen how people were filling their shopping baskets full of bread.
3. In few months we have Ramadan!
Bob ,   TA   (04.15.11)
If also Jews of Akko respect Islam so much, I guess they will close their restaurants during next Ramadan, or at least check customers' IDs and refuse the Muslim ones... The Rabbi should be the responsible person.
4. To ยท 1, 2 and 3
Abraham Nachmias ,   Petach Tikva IL   (04.15.11)
To be a Jew is not like being a Christian, we are a people and a religion, just that a religion that is not based on receiving excuses every Sunday. Torah is a way of living, the Jewish way of living, if for you it is SO hard not to eat bread for a week, you are forgetting more than half of being Jewish, you are trying to do just what you like and laughing about the rest of our people, never mind, from Egypt just 20% of our people came out and from the experiments in Europe to do what you propose as a way of living nothing is left. Obviously you don't care if your grandsons will be Jewish!
5. Religion Strikes Again
Boris Yasdnilkov ,   Fernandina Beach, US   (04.15.11)
While I hope never to turn away from Yahweh, this dialogue involving dogmas reflects why many people turn away from "religion." Isn't it strange that according to Sheikh Asi "the rabbi and I are in very good relations and we cooperate on anything related to the city..." yet cooperation on and the issuance of a religious decree against the selling of chametz has more importance that the issuance of a decree prohibiting the destruction of lives? What's wrong with this picture?
6. religious idiocy
Mike ,   new york   (04.15.11)
Why doesnt the rabbi worry more about his own religious 'piousness' than worry about other people's business. There are many Jews who choose to eat bread or not throw out bread during Pesach, its no one's business how one leads their life. Another example of religious fanatics spreading their ugly tentacles into all areas of life.
7. To #4
Christian ,   Omaha, NE   (04.15.11)
Abraham The Torah is for all believers just not those who are ethnically Jewish. The problem is that 99.99% of 'Christians' don't understand that.
8. Why can't people decide on their own
Martin ,   Germany   (04.15.11)
what they want to eat. Whats next, will he ask Mazda only to sell cars to jews that dont start on Shabbat?
9. Hilul HaShem
Jose FARIAS ,   Sao Paulo - Brasil   (04.15.11)
G'd set us up free to choose, and this rabbi disrespect the freedom of choice given by the Creator? This rabbi would like to be a jewish pope.
10. Theres always 99% of the earth if Jews cant give a hoot
Yaawqove ,   Israel   (04.15.11)
about the most basic thing of their identity. surprisingly the traditions of Judaism are not: samsung, sony, panasonic, toyota, or...bread on passover. makes sense to learn about your past; why would your kids want to listen to you if you never listened to your own history? Its a brilliant history we have and it shapes how we view the world, and have positive influcne on the wolrd. I suggest every Jews learn more, there is so much wealth in knowledge!
11. 4# your a moron just like that crazy rabbi
Dyslexic........ ,   Israel....   (04.15.11)
I will eat bread eat pork when I feel like it.This does not make worse Jew.
12. who is he to tell me what to do? reason why i left

13. im eating hametz and proud if that! down with

Midle Adges
14. As a religious Jew, I think this is a short-sighted move
Ari   (04.15.11)
Education is the key.
15. To 4
Bob ,   TA   (04.15.11)
You missed my point. Jews can eat bread or not, but why Muslim shopkeepers should be responsible for that? Should Jewish grocers refuse to sell alcohol to Muslims who are keen to buy it in spite of their religious ban?
16. You can't dictate people how much they have to be religious
FullFridge ,   Israel   (04.15.11)
Everyone must decide for himself. Enforcing religion belongs to Saudi-Arabia and has no place in a country that wants to call itself democracy - makes me wonder how far Israel still is one?
17. I shall eat whatever I want
Sagi   (04.15.11)
and whenever I want. I shall ask no Rabbi or "holy man" what to eat and when to eat. Freedom of thought and movement and action, within the bounds of the law, take pecedence over all else, especially the self imposed yoke of religion which turns a person into a slave.
18. Not Selling Chametz
Nili   (04.15.11)
Maybe we should think about a rabbi and an imam cooperating with each other out of respect. Regardless of anything else, wouldn't it make for a better place if we could just talk to each other and try to get along? Why do we always have to hate anyone who does not agree with us?
19. Strange
Arab ,   England   (04.15.11)
Surely if a Jewish person wants to eat levened bread, he will do it? Spirituality is personal. I don't think the Imam can really do anything about it. He also, strictly speaking, has no right to tell Muslims not to sell bread. They have a right to sell it and Jews have a right to buy. If anyone - a Jew or a Muslim - is forced to observe their faith, then their observance has less meaning.
20. Chametz in Acco
A real Jew ,   Tel Aviv   (04.15.11)
A real Jew is one who respects his neighbor. The so called religious Jews have forgotten God and they are turning our religion into one of rituals. If I want to eat bread on Passover this is none of Rabbi Yashar's business, as his r decision to live as in the middle ages, is none of my business.
21. #4: I hoe that my grandchildren will hav the RIGHT to chose
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (04.15.11)
You religious folk have no right to tell others how to live their lives. Doing that will drive more Jews away from Judaism and Israel. If all the secular Israelis were to leave then the ultra Orthodox bigots will become chopped liver for the Arabs after Ramadan!
22. Such a small thing, not eating chametz for 8 days, for G-d.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (04.15.11)
23. You all are missing the point
preplexed ,   US   (04.15.11)
The important thing is that Rabbi and Imam talk, work together, cooperate, are friends and that's where the peace takes its roots. This is where the future of Israel and Palestine will be.
24. #4 Abraham
David ,   America   (04.15.11)
I am Messianic. You call me a Christian. I do not eat chametz on Pasach. The reason I do not is not because I am called Christian or called Jewish. It is because Torah says I can't. I do this in obedience from my heart, not because I have to be policed by a Rabbi who tries to legislate obedience. If obedience to Torah is not done from the heart then it makes no difference.
25. i do not eat chametz but i refuse to give him the right
ralph   (04.15.11)
to decide for me.
26. give #4 a BREAK 4 G-d sake.
Good Boy   (04.15.11)
27. What wacky BS
Cameron ,   USA   (04.15.11)
Thank God I live in the US.
28. Jerusalem Old City is just as good a place to buy
JO   (04.15.11)
There are always places to buy bread for those who want it. Jerusalem has plenty, in the Old City especially, of course not in the Jewish quarter. Just as it should be.
29. #19 You have it spot on. 100% agree
Jo   (04.15.11)
Fortunately some of our Rabbis would like to control our lives more intimately thence this attempt. Jerusalem (especially Old City) has plenty places to buy bread, far more than Acco, and Jewish religious areas are not affected. Forced observance kills all true faith.
30. cauz Jews abstain from selling food to Arab in Ramadan?
