1. a modest proposal
Michael ,   Haifa   (05.06.11)
Why not apply the Naqba Law to them ?
2. Haredim should leave Israel
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (05.06.11)
3. Extremely simple!
CC   (05.06.11)
Write threatening little letters to their MKs, you can find them through Google, Knesset list!
4. How funny do they ignore their social security checks
Avi ,   Israel   (05.06.11)
Strange they have no problem , milking the state dry, while contributing nothing, they enjoy security and comfort provided by the State of Israel and above all that thanks to our welfair system they never have to work a day in their holy lives. With all that in mind i would have thought it would be a big cause of celebration for them, where else can you spend a life time being a parastie ?
5. um, my kids have off...
smartone ,   israel   (05.06.11)
and they are in the "chareidi" system..
6. Oh please!
Yehuda ,   אשדוד   (05.06.11)
What nonsense! A friend in the Technion tells me that there are no lectures, but everyone is there studying. i.e. School is OPEN! Stop looking for things to whine about. Us Charedim pay plenty of taxes that go to support sport stadiums, theaters, and other 'cultural' garbage. If we would be exempt from ALL taxes (including VAT) and receive NO money from the government, we would be way ahead of the game. So who is taking advantage of whom?
7. once again working for the reform movement
yoni ,   tel aviv   (05.06.11)
ynet is once again working on behalf of the reform movement in Israel. reformed judaism is a spec of dust in Israel yet enjoys a large voice from ynet time and time again. who is uri regev and why do we care what his response is on a national issue? ynet is being paid off by jstreet to publish this nonsense opinion from a nobody and make it sound like mainstream media. stop this immediately. ps. the last few talkbacks i pointed this out were censored by ynet- freedom of what?
8. Independence Day
steve ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (05.06.11)
The Education Ministry declined comment. It is simply disgusting that we die for our freedom and these slime balls are allowed to get public funds and don't accept the State. Does anyone in this farce of a government have any integrity?
9. bad Jews are not born, they are made by their parents
jo   (05.06.11)
Why should these so-called Jews feel that they should celebrate a unique historical event that gave them freedom, a birthright, the choice of cursing real jews who gave them life, the choice of rejecting the state that is protecting them, the choice of begging like cheap street beggars, the choice of being productive citizens (rejected). In essence, tteir own private and selfish god made them pariahs in a State that, for some unknown reason, encourages all the above for the last 63 years with $ billions (from real workingJews ) so they can become a worthless segment of our society. An afterthought : Did our govt. made them what they turned out to be or, did they make our govt to their own image ?
10. They are WORSE than the Arabs
Sarah ,   Israel   (05.06.11)
They should not receive one agarot of state funds, no services, no health benefits, no food wavers, NADA!!! This is really a crime.
11. Haredi school
Henio ,   Berlin Germany   (05.06.11)
Instead of money give these schools free tickets for all family members to Teheran or Gaza, where they will meet friends, who also don't recognize the state of Israel
12. Completely Missing the Point
Michael ,   UK   (05.06.11)
This article equates not taking time of on Independence Day to not recognising the State of Israel. That leap is completely unjustified. The reason many of the Charedi institutions dont take time off is more to do with the fact that the yeshivas believe in the importance of learning Torah. This should not be disrupted for a public holiday. Many of the charedim would argue that learning Torah on Independence day is doing more for the state than taking a public holiday. This article is just an excuse to bash the Charedim.
13. new status quo? an idea
(05.06.11)
ok let's tit for tat they are open on Yom hazikaron & Yom HaAtzmaut We get to eat Bread during Passover!
14. #12
Michael ,   Israel   (05.06.11)
You miss the point. Studying Torah is a waste of time at any time. The haredi should show respect to the State, just like they should work and not waste their lives (and our money) studying nothing. Your Talkback is just an excuse to bash the decent, hardworking people of Israel and to celebrate the leeches.
15. Citizens of the State
leo ,   nyc   (05.06.11)
If State money is given, then the State has the right to insist that the schools close on Independence Day. But maybe it's better, because some of the" so-called" scholars would probably throw rocks at cars if they were home to show that they don't recognize the State,,,
16. you know all that hard-earned money you spend on taxes?
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (05.06.11)
you're welcome. but hey, it's not like they are celebrating the nakba.
17. Hope the staff and children will be saying Tehillim all day!
saftala ,   Israel   (05.06.11)
18. If
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim   (05.06.11)
B"H If we were indipendent and the State was Jewish, we wouldn't have things like building freeze in the Shomron, Judea and Jerusalem. We wouldn't have things like the IDF, the only official State army in the whole world that destroys Jewish housing and synagogues just because they are Jewish!
19. I don't want them to live off MY TAX MONEY!
(05.06.11)
20. haredi : to michael
phil ,   Israel -jerusalem   (05.06.11)
hypocrite!
21. There goes Uri Regev the Haredi Basher
Baily ,   USA   (05.06.11)
And he calles himself "Rabbi"?. Such A senceless article, Unfortunately the gap between Haredi and Hiloni is widened only by articles like this, not by Haredim not eating burgers and hot dogs at the beach on Independence Day. Hiloni..... stop and think for a moment what the Haredi way of life stands for, and you can learn to appreciate it, along with understanding why they don't do, what Hilonim do, on Independence Day.
22. Would you guys PLEASE leave the Haredim
Israeli 2   (05.06.11)
alone? They are not religious Jews ... They are Angels! Ordinary laws will never apply to them because...they are above humanity...higher and superior in every way.
23. What do they study, what do they know?
Michael ,   California, USA   (05.06.11)
They may be studying, but they learn nothing. Some people are twisting and turning to find relevance to justify studying Tanah in Israeli schools. It is only a matter of time and this practice will cease. Haredi reading of the tanah and other religious books leaves them completely uneducated, unprepared for work in a modern economy. We can only feel sorry for children in the haredi system. Doing the Tanah contest on Israel's Independence Day is also a waste of time. Instead, on a national holiday Israel can do a contest on History or the Hebrew language, or even a trivia contest on Independence related topics.
24. #12 Michael UK: CRAP!
David ,   Proud Israeli   (05.06.11)
The Haredim contribute nothing to the country. They don't pay tax they just use their political power to usurp the funds earmarked for the fire services, road and rail development and education. I am sure that the Zionist Orthodox Jews who contribute to the country' in every way and serve in the IDF with distinction have no less regard for Torah and religious study! Do not forget that some of the Ultra-Orthodox don't recognize the State of Israel and applaud Ahmadinejad's aim to wipe Israel of the face of the world!
25. #14
i ,   jerusalem   (05.06.11)
IOW, nobody is entitled to a belief system, or priorities, but your opinion is to be taken as the oracle. Get a life pal, even a secular life.
26. #14 respect
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (05.06.11)
I know that this sounds strange, but some people think that staying up all night and then sleeping the whole day isn't respectful. But a questions: how often have you said Kadish for the Israeli war dead who had no descendants? I know many Haredim who do.
27. Secular Jews DESECRATE the HOLY SHABBAT WEEKLY!
Cohen   (05.06.11)
Now that's something to be upset about especially in the Jewish country. Secular Jews should leave Israel and go live in Uganda as per Herzl's dream where they will be able to live as G-dless Jews as they please and never have a problem with those fanatic talibanim hareidim. Oh, if only all the secular Jews would make aliyah to Uganda and leave Jerusalem and the rest of Israel for religious Jews. It would bring peace to the world and certainly to Israel.
28. Cut off their funding
Madeleine ,   Rehovot Israel   (05.06.11)
The government has to stop all funding to these parasites. Let them fund their own education then they can do what they like. why should even 1 agora of my tax money go to these people, who undoctrinate such anti-Israel principles into their pupils. Just get them out of the state system. It's bad enough that every time there are elections, or rather, election results, the haredi are blackmailing whichever party seeks to form a government, with its support if in turn the government makes them promises that anger not only the secular population but much of the national religious as well. How did we get lumbered with such a parasitic community?
29. #3 Not so simple.
Madeleine ,   Rehovot Israel   (05.06.11)
Great idea in principle, but unfortunately, unlike British politicians who are answerable to their constituents and know that they won't get reelected if they don't deliver, Israeli politicians are answerable to nobody. They just simply ignore the Israeli public. True, there are a few with a true conscience. Don't know who they are though.
30. #6
Madeleine ,   Rehovot Israel   (05.06.11)
So why don't you do just what you propose, seek exemption from all taxes and receive no bituach leumi at all, ever, and no government handouts. No municpal services either. Form your own. You really are happy enough to take child support, income support and the rest, aren't you. And it just goes to show your totally narrow-mindeness if you call sports and theaters cultural garbage. There is plenty of Haredi garbage. Seems you know nothing outside of your studies. You really think that's what G-d wants?
