1. Enough of Shalit
Ralph ,   Yonkers USA   (05.11.11)
The broadcasters were right. There is no room for and there would be no limit to protests for hundreds of causes. The Shalit family should be ashamed at themselves. They already ‘cursed out’ the Prime Minister, now they need to disturb every event? Israel needs to find another way to define captive soldiers. Israel needs to break the bargaining chip vicious circle over every soldier.
2. Reply #1 And if it were your son Ralphey
Avi ,   Israel   (05.11.11)
Well done to the Shalit family for their protest, while those fools were marching up and down and the usual bunch of Low life politicians are doing all they can to inflate their own egos, Gilad Shalit is being held captive even without access to red cross represnstatives.
3. So? What's the problem here?
Tahl   (05.11.11)
The Shalits have already gotten WAY too much attention from the media than they deserved, which effectively weakened Israel's negotiation position with Hamas. We have already seen how destructive this can be, when Karnit Goldwasser (with the generous help of the media) raped an entire country to release a baby-murderer for the body of her husband. And now, after crossing the line of good taste and tact, acting like common hooligans and disrupting a nationally-broadcast ceremony - the Shalits still have the temerity to expect the media to dance to their fiddle? We all realize their pain, but this is still hutzpa. Good for JCS to censor these images. I see no problem with this at all. And shame on Channel 2 for abandoning national responsibility in favor of rating.
4. The version I saw was fine
deebo_ ,   Holon   (05.11.11)
While the cauldrons were being lit, the announcer apologized for the interruption and mentioned that Shalit protests were occurring, and we could hear yelling in the background. I think it was handled appropriately. The announcer mentioned that this was going on but didn't detract from the significance of the event by showing the protesters on TV. Feel free to tell us about it afterwards in more detail, but not while I'm enjoying a national ceremony.
5. right descision
tiki ,   belgium   (05.11.11)
The TV channels were right, not to show this 'protest. The Shalit family is overstepping their right's by 'disrespecting the suffering of others. They protest to the wrong people at the wrong places.
6. coverage was as it should be
barbie ,   haifa, israel   (05.11.11)
We all understood that the Shalit brother was protesting, but we didn't have to see it at the time. I tuned in to watch a national ceremony and celebrate our Independence Day, I did not tune in to see the Shalit protest. All the news channels showed the protest after, that was more than enough coverage. Doesn't Ynet have anything else to write about????
7. Quite correct.
Rebecca ,   Modi'in   (05.11.11)
I still feel for Gilad, but his family have lost my sympathy, as I have lost their support for my safety, and the safety of my son and all the sons of Israel. Go protest in front of the French embassy, at the un buildings, or in Ramala on Necaba day.
8. shalit and family
sas ,   israel   (05.11.11)
you were wrong with what you did at the ceremony. GO HOME and leave Jerusalem. If things are not good 4 u here move to france. maybe there they will help you more. you have lost alot of respect in israeli society with your nonsense.
9. what is wrong with people here?
moshe ,   tel aviv   (05.11.11)
suppressing a legitimate protest about the blatant failure and disregard for gilad shalit by the government is a warning sign that our politicians are dangerously out of touch. our very democracy is under threat when politicians are allowed to get away with callous disgregard like they have shown towards gilad and the whole shalit family. shame on those seeking to defend the indefensible stance of our politicians. the greatest shame is on the politicians though.
10. Shalit
michael Pielet ,   boca,usa   (05.11.11)
What the shalit family has done is wrong.. Obviously the Shalit family was encouraged by the irresponsible Israeli media. Better, the Shalit family goes to Teheran and speak to the one who will decide if and when and in what condition Shalit will be released, the AYATOLLAH. All Israeli governments have done the maximum to release our captives having gone so far as to risk our soldiers lives in rescue operations and placed our citizens lives at risk by releasing terrorist murderers from jail.
11. #9 No my friend, this is actually democracy at its best.
Tahl   (05.11.11)
Looks like you need to do the bagrut in ezrahut all over again. Our politicians in this case, are actually very much in touch with the public sentiments. They simply represent the voice of the sane (yet quiet) majority, who wish to get Gilad back safely, but not at any price, as the Shalits ask for. If our politicians would fold and agree to Hamas's outrageous demand of releasing hundreds of terrorists, dozens of whom are murderers with blood on their hands - THEN they would be "out of touch" with the public, and our democracy would be in danger.
12. #2, #9
Line Singer ,   Århus, Denmark   (05.11.11)
Good to see that some Israelis still have a heart! Indeed what is wrong with people in Israel? Most people seem to just want to close their eyes to reality and clap their hands like morons at a silly ceremony that has nothing to do with the actual reality. Yes, I'm also happy and celebrating Israel's 63rd birthday but I won't be part of this pretence that everything is fine. It is NOT.
13. Free Gilad
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (05.11.11)
Last night in the Israel Prize Ceremony Israel was described as the Democratic state in the Middle East which we are. So then why did not the three stations show the Shalit protest live, they should be embarrassed for not doing so. #1 what would you do if your child had been kidnapped for 1781 days sit on you ass and do nothing. This family is doing all they can to make the general public do something and will not give up until Gilad is home. Its time for the government to act.
14. Media already give Shalits more publicity than they deserve
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.11.11)
Every utterance of this or that Shalit is made a news item. The media are complicit in the campaign to parade the family's "pain" and add to the pressure on *this* government to "bring him home". Well, Israel isn't holding their boy. And the ongoing pressure is only weakening Israel's position, raising the ultimate "price" for his release. Shame on them all. Of course, there are some - like Avi (#2) and moshe (#9) who use the "what if it was your son?" mantra. Well, the country's leaders must represent the *country's* best interests, not those of one family at a cost to the rest.
15. If it was
Zohar ,   Tel Aviv   (05.11.11)
my son - god forbid - I would disrupt every single thing I could. I would fight and scream until I had no voice at all. I don't get why these anti Israel Arabs and people come to ynet to just abuse us further. Stick to your own media or are you to afraid to voice any opinon there. You're disgusting!!!! Gilad's brother and girlfriend were right on in what they did. I was proud of them. Channel 2 talked about it while it was happening.
16. Would U have cared so much if the protest was for...
Ariel ,   Judea   (05.11.11)
Gush Katif? Or *against* releasing 1000s of murderers for the son of a politically astute leftist? Of course not.
17. What's wrong with you, Moshe?
Mark ,   Israel   (05.11.11)
Do you really think that anyone anywhere has a right to disrupt an official ceremony? Can burst anywhere and start making demands? Sorry, it's not democracy, it's anarchy. And anarchy bases itself on childish unworkable ideas. No country will be able to exist if anarchy is adopted as a constitutional base. Regardless whether the cause is just or not.
18. I feel for the Shalits BUT
Merav ,   tel aviv   (05.11.11)
I believe that our country has been remiss in engaging in exchanging terrorists for captives. 150 Israelis are dead as a result of previous such exchanges, killed by terrorists in the months and years after their release. We must go back to no negotiations and no prisoner releases with terrorist entties such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The situation of Gilad Shalit and his family is heartrending but he is in that situation because the terrorists know that kidnapping has paid off for them in the past.
19. Youre missing the point
Chaya ,   Tel Aviv   (05.11.11)
The blackout came from the government - not the TV channels! Now why would they want to do that?? This was a news event which should have been reported AND shown! This wasn't bin-Laden's dead body for cryin' out loud!!
20. #17
Line Singer ,   Århus, Denmark   (05.11.11)
And you don't think there's anarchy in Israel already?
21. The Israeli gov should deal for Shalit
Ali ,   Scotland   (05.11.11)
I Hope that Israel Palestinian is set free and Shalit walks up to an crossing point
22. 21 who are you lol
Ali ,   Scotland   (05.11.11)
sorry that post came out like jibberish but I'm sure people can fill in the blanks.
23. 21
birdi ,   israel   (05.11.11)
what ? try again ali.
24. I as a father of two IDF soldiers who risk their very lives
Al   (05.11.11)
24/7 to protect the country have had enough of the constant bleeping we hear from the Shalits. Let me tell them that there are 100's of 1000' s of parents who spend sleepless nights worrying about their children who serve in the IDF. I live in Canada, my kids are in Israel. I prowl the internet almost 24/7 looking for news as to Israel. I worry sick about their welfare but I'll be damn if I were to make a complete asshole out of myself when push will come to shove. The government of Israel has tons of problems on its hand every single day. The population of Israel seems to suffer from entitlement issues. They seem to demand that the government be their wet nurse 24/7. I dont understand that. I learned from a young age that the life you have you make on your own. Mr Sahlit..be a honourable man and take it like a man. My late dad lost a son in Israel over 30 years ago. He suffered in silence till his death. He never expected anyone to baby him. Your son is alive...take your protest and your angst to those who kidnapped him. Thats where your complaints should lie. The Jews of Israel have been paying and are paying a price 24/7 to ensure that more soldiers and civilians are not murdered by those who you seem to forget have kidnapped your son. I wish you well...but this constant pining for public sympathy and the distruption of a public event has crossed the line. You have indeed lost the support of many in the past few days.
25. #2 First complain to the Red Cross
Ralph ,   Yonkers USA   (05.11.11)
Gilad is all our sons. But frankly it is too bad he is not dead. Then we would not have the Shalit family making disgusting protests. Just like Goldwasser. I heard Samir Kuntar is helping to prepare advanced terrorist training for the thousand thugs the Salit family wants released for their son.
26. Ralph #25
Harvey ,   London   (05.11.11)
Are you sure you are not Sammy Kuntar If not you deserve each other after your abhorrent last comment
27. In terms of Soviet Jews
babawawa ,   new york, usa   (05.11.11)
We didn't demonstrate against our own government, but against the Soviet government. What more can the Israeli government do? The red cross isn't even allowed to see him. The most effective way to get him back is concerted demonstrations in front of Palestinian events, quasi- embassies, anti-Israel protest rallies. What Shalit's family is doing is preaching to the choir.
28. #24 Al: bravo! you said it all!
Rafi ,   US   (05.11.11)
... plus the fact that any release of captured terrorists in an exchange would be yet another security disaster for Israel. Why don't more Israelis see the obvious?? People are pained for the Shalits' situation, but....
29. #9 is right: you are censored all over the place...
