1. Such a vast amount of money ...
Jules   (05.11.11)
... would be enough to offer voluntary resettlement in one of (over 50) Muslim countries to all those who refuse to "suffer under Zionist occupation".
2. Who cares about EU?
Rachel ,   US   (05.11.11)
Are these the same group of clowns who can't take down Gaddafi?
3. roots of british enmity
alexi   (05.11.11)
100,000 british soldiers governed palestine pre israel. Because the jews fought to regain their country from which the romans had booted most of them out, clashes with the british broke out And the british favoured the arabs and in fact gave 80% of mandate to become jordan to abdullah, a huge mistake that will have to be corrected in final negotiations as jordan sits on some land belonging to the jews. And this won't go away. So ashton and hague have no love for israel. They vacation in jordan and are inclined to the arabs. On top of this enmity, the brits are affected sometimes by the chamberlain-olmertitis which is the gutless cowardly streak and so pay ransoms endlessly to the arabs. The only guarantee that israel has itself and the idf, and cold armistice arrangements with the arabs. Anything else is haaretz pie in the sky.
4. Not moralise
Danny   (05.11.11)
just interfere. Got to justify that budget somehow...
5. this article highlights
gdfathermax ,   tel aviv israel   (05.11.11)
the negative effect of the eu. whereas most of the countries don't actually agree on anything the machinery drives all along a parth of gd know's where. the one thing they have in common is a jealousy bordering on hatred of israel. this is especialy true of the uk and france. part of the reason is fear of their huge moslem minorities. however israel grows stronger by the month and soon with our gas, oil shale and high tec every thing will change. we will get richer and they poorer.
6. Utter hypocracy
Yosi ,   Gilo, Israel   (05.11.11)
If our government is going to destroy Jewish homes for even war heros, and then not allow demolition of illegal arab homes in clearly stolen land, what do they expect? Bibi is allowing Barak to continue his war against Jews. Will then, G-d not give him the same on the international front? Where is justice, where is right? This government of Bibi and Barak do evil to our own people and then expect different from the Europeans? Please!?!
7. A State of Palestine is in Europe's interest
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (05.11.11)
Yoffe in transatlantic New York apparently has difficulty in seeing this. The Arab world is Europe's natural trading partner. So is the State of Israel. The continuing withholding of justice for the Palestinian people is a source for continued conflict and instability. Israel's continued occupation of Palestinian territory is also a clear violation of international law. The vast majority of the people in Europe are ahead of their own governments and the EU government in wanting justice for the Palestinian people. What Joffe interprets as "intrusive and paternalistic" interference in Israel is the result of increasing public pressure on the EU's foreign policy makers to step up pressure on Israel to end its occupation and stop blocking the emergence of the State of Palestine. Over the coming years this pressure will only increase. People in Europe are fed up with an empty "peace process" that only serves as fig leaf to hide Israel's ongoing colonisation of Palestinian land.
8. A declining civilization seeking to remain relevant
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.11.11)
The Europe we once knew will soon be no more, the result of multi-culturalism, socialist entitlement, post-colonialist guilt, and pandering to the Arab and Islamic world. All they can offer is moral posturing, and the arrogance of sticking their nose where they have no standing. It's true there's increasing resentment among many in Europe - nationals who resent the loss of sovereign decision-making to unelected bureaucrats, the disparagement of their cultures, and the social and economic burdens of unassimilable immigrants. The elites brush this as the bigotry or racism of the small minded. It is no such thing.
9. The hyenas guarding the lambs?
rivka ,   usa   (05.11.11)
So, in essence, the EU has become a political whorehouse, run by pimps, condemning the virtuous daughters of honest households to submit to the rape of nations void of moral authority, for the sake of 'business'. ??? In other words, why bother with justice, law and order.....just let the criminals and inmates rule, bribe, contaminate and corrupt the "un named"(protected) pimps, and extortionists 'run the show' - until society becomes the hostage of moral bankruptcy? What next? Bashir of Sudan and Assad to be nominated for the next Nobel Peace Prize? Why not Charles Manson, Ahmadinejad and Robert Mugabe too............Be strong, Israel, be strong, because no nation has paid the price and made the sacrifices you have made, and keep the ship sailing through the storms of this spineless political ocean of cowards and thieves, who, when they become victims, will find no redemption.
10. Accurate, insightful article
Hunt S. Cross ,   England   (05.11.11)
11. Catherine Ashton / UK prefers Arabs over Jews
Steve   (05.11.11)
Catherine Ashton and the British at large like the Arabs. They prefer Arabs - certainly over Jews - and they welcome productive Muslim-Arab immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa to help fund their expensive social welfare programs, through needed tax revenue. Indeed their Arab immigrants are making babies; many babies are named Muhammad in England. The Palestinians are hard-working, productive peoples. Perhaps England would be willing to assimilate Israel's Arabs into the United Kingdom. This would solve to difficult issues; England's and Israel's. Both Israel and England would benefit. It is a win-win solution to a seeming intractable problem.
12. If the EU is giving the PA money to cover what we're holding
Rebecca ,   Modi'in   (05.11.11)
back, does that mean we can keep the money? We can use it for our POOR ARAB population, to educate and feed them so they can protest Nacaba day!!
13. rock and hard place
Lior ,   Israel   (05.11.11)
When we think of EU as being "intrusive and paternalistic" let us take a journey backwards. I think of who dictates what to Israel as though Israel is not her own country but a third rate banana republic. So I ask, how was it our 'good friend' George Bush post 9-11, war on terror and certainly post horrific intifada for us in Israel, formulate the 'quartet for peace' who has not given Israel a moments rest dictating what we should do and how we should act ever since. On this quartet we have 3 ARCH ENEMIES OF Israel, RUSSIA, UN AND EU. My friends, you have short term memories. We were doomed ever since the formulation of that quartet. That quartet has caused great angst for Israel.
14. Don't worry, the demise of Europe is inevitable
Danny ,   USA   (05.11.11)
It is a slow process but sooner or later the continent of Europe which represents the Jewish graveyard will go down.
15. #7 Your right wing Islamic propaganda is not in my interest
Phil ,   Ireland   (05.11.11)
When are you going to admit that Hamas sees all of Israel as occupation? Do you think their policy of killing Jews as written in Article 7 of their Charter is in Europe's interest? Your right wing fascist friends can stay away from Europe. We've had enough of that thrash already.
16. Israel's PR strategy
Neil Turner ,   Watford, UK   (05.11.11)
Good article Israel needs to hit back. I suugest two areas of attack 1. Many in EU countries, particu;arly the UK, despise the EU and want out. Politicians won't give us a choice here, and feel very sensitive about this. Israel's spokemen should embarass them. Ashton has never had a job as a result of a vote. No democracy at play here 2. You were right to point out sensitivities over Muslim voters. Again, another sore point that should be exploited by your PR people
17. Ben Alofs #7, you are long-winded, boring, and wrong.
Jake   (05.11.11)
18. BRAVO!
Anshel ,   Toronto, Canada   (05.11.11)
19. I want my tax money back
Mike ,   Oxford UK   (05.11.11)
The whole EU is bankrupt. Why are we financing the Palestinian Authority of whom 50% are people we the EU regard as terrorists?
20. AFAIK the US is currently going down
Atomino ,   Germany   (05.12.11)
Rotten infrastructure. Debts at China. Melting USD. Jobs moved to India and China. Sinking life span as the only industrial country in the world. No Industry except banking anymore. Bad medical treatment for normal people. Crime and Violence. So I think you should make an reallity check. Remember what happened to the Roman Empire? Oooh Wait - I bet you even don't know where europe is located on the map like the most of the americans.
21. #20 Atomino
barry ,   chicago, usa   (05.12.11)
Nice comments. I hope you have your prayer rug handy for your allahu akbars, when there's a Muslim majority in Europe within the next generation. And the US is declining?? At least there's no birthrate crisis here. Good luck my good friend, you'll need it.
22. recognition? so what?
Eddie ,   UK   (05.12.11)
what does recognition mean anyway? Does the EU recognize North Cyprus as being part of the Greek Cyprus (and EU member?) Turkey is occupying half of Cyprus, and yet is a major partner and exporter to EU, and part of Nato. EU arms sanctions against Syria - as if his will stop Iran, Russia and china from supplying them with more arms. ANd the once mighty UK, which occupied Palestine and prevented Jews from entering during the holocaust, now has about 5 operational warplanes in the RAF, having had to cancel most of its air force, and 3 of these planes are flying over Libya, and occasionally dropping bombs. So what exactly will the recognition of Palestine do that it didnt achieve in 1988?
23. #7, really thats why they keep the aid they give secret?
Danny   (05.12.11)
I wonder how many EU members would be happy to see billions of their tax money going to the Palestinians?
24. Why "Palestinian refugee" is the inherited status?
tanya ,   tel aviv israel   (05.12.11)
Why hundreds of thousands of Jordanian citizens are still "Palestinian refugees"? How Hamas educators are paid by EU, US? Google for UNRWA: Perpetuator of Conflict". For the attention of naive EC, US taxpayers!
25. Rachel @ 2. I think you should care
Morgan ,   North America   (05.12.11)
Europe is a world superpower with more financial and military might than the US. Its GDP and spending power is a trillion dollars more than the USA. I think if you have any brains you'd realise its best to have the big boys on your side. Or did you forget how is was in school already back 50 years ago?
26. #25, you might want to double check those claims
Danny   (05.12.11)
Look how far NATO is getting without the americans and with the exception of Germany all of the EU is suffering which is why the EU keeps the billions it has shovelled to the Palestinians secret
27. #26 America is in Nato. Whats your point?
Lior ,   Tel Aviv   (05.12.11)
I think #25s point is its probably that its a good thing to have the EU on Israels despite your right wing opinions, or whatever. We have enough enemies as it is. Last I checked repossed homes by the bank were still selling in parts of the US for 2$.. What an economy. US should have joined in the world war 2 years earlier, because they didnt we lost millions more Jews thru Hitler. Thanks USA.
28. To hell with EU
Peter   (05.13.11)
EU and € should collapse. That is the best what can happen to us.I hate the EU and their unelected thugs who are regulating every aspect of our life. The bureaucracy is endless. The Euro? They didn't ask us and they knew why.So let the corrupt EU break down. Then we can build something better!
29. #27, seriously?
Danny   (05.13.11)
millions of Jews were killed for one and one reason alone - that the British were appeasing the Arabs and blocked all immigration. As for NATO, you see what happened in Libya once the US pulled back? the US isn't in NATO, the US ***IS*** NATO. As for the economy - look at the UK, lookat Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Greece. Basically look at anyone who is not a tiny tax free state sitting on oil wealth or Germany. Finally, the EU is NOT on Israel;s side. It funds the people who attack Israel.
30. Catherina Ashton - former Miss Britain
Peter Heller ,   London   (05.13.11)
