The premise of MAD or mutually assured destruction only works if both sides have the bomb. It worked well enough in the cold war, so why should it not work here. Both Israel and Iran will know that to use a nuclear weapon will lead to there own annihilation, thus preventing them from actually using them. Israel has to accept they introduced nuclear weapons to the region and therefore it was inevitable that an opposing state would require their own nuclear deterrent to counter the threat from Israel. Lets not forget that Israel and right wing propaganda organisations have been telling us for years that Iran was x months away from having nuclear weapons. I just don't believe them any more, it has become perpetual fear mongering based on nothing more than prejudice. Have they never heard the story of the boy who cried wolf.

What a dumb thing to blame Nkorea on, it was Truman who was president at the time of the Korean war and he tried to talk peace with Russia and China instead of offense. Learn history you troll

That's what they said about the bomb a short time ago. Now what?

interesting when the tables are turned. maybe you guys should not have developed weapons for Britain clandestinely all these years. Remember the ship the Liberty? We do.

This article fails to explain how only occupation would stop it. Only a jackass would maintain that. One well placed cruise missile salvo and Iran has its own Fukushima.

Stop driving yourself crazy asking why common sense tactics are not being utilized. I advise the masses to just sit back and enjoy the show our great leaders have in store for the common people with half an education.
67. The 12ers Now Have Nukes
sbenard ,   Bountiful, USA   (06.06.11)
The 12ers in Iran feel an obligation to Allah to initiate global bloodshed that will be the trigger for the return of the Mahdi, or 12th Imam. Ahmadinejad and Khameini are both 12ers/ they have no fear of retaliation, and welcome the bloodshed it will cause. They feel it is their duty to initiate Armageddon. They WILL use those nukes, because they feel this duty requires it of them. This will ultimately lead to the greatest global destruction since WWII! Plan and prepare accordingly!

You are drawing a moral equivalency between the US and Iran? When was the last time the US vowed to wipe a people group out of existence as Iran continues to do with the Jews?

Mike ,   Springfield, OR   (06.06.11)
Wrong. Israel, and, the US aren't controlled by Islamic fundamentalists who view other people as lower-life-forms, and sanction their slaughter by some twisted Koran-interpretation. Israel wants peace, Muslim fanatics do not, end-of-story.
70. # 62 Ian
Anadelfos ,   Athens Greece   (06.06.11)
Dear Ian. The question placed by #15 was not about when the Korean war broke out, but about when N. Korea became nuclear power. So #17 answered correctly. During the Korean war, Mc Arthur who was the UN field military leader expressed his will to nuke N. Korea's northern borders with China, but Truman rejected this and obliged him to resign. Later came the sensitive cease fire ,which lasts untill now.

mc ,   usa   (06.06.11)
Some of you are using western logic when commenting on this issue, as in #61. Doesn't work.If obama and his cronies continue to think in western terms when dealing with islam we're all doomed. I laugh when we pass out so much money in the mid-east. They would take our money with one hand while the other hand happily destroys us. As stated before, Iran believes that it's their holy duty to destroy Israel and the west. Ahmadinejad has called many times for the annihilation of Israel. He will attempt it as soon as he has the capability. And he doesn't care if even he dies as a result - he will be a martyr. He believes it is his personal duty to help usher in the 12th Imam, who is to islam as Jesus is to Christians. There was a video recently released by Iran discussing all this. Supposedly a soldier from the Revolutionary Guard defected and brought the same message. You can't begin to understand this if you don't understand religious fanaticism. Do a little research before you post opinions - you might actually learn something.

Please provide your proof that "Iran will not attack another country unless attacked first so there won't be a problem". Iran threatens annihilation of another while seeking nuclear weapons for that same purpose, and has said so many times over. And the fallacy of your statemenet "The real issue is Arab self sufficiency in the energy sector" should be obvious as Iran has lots of oil and has no need of nuclear power. Building the refineries they need would provide the self-sufficiency they want. The problem is they seek annihilation of others (see above).

Rustin Chrisco ,   Bentonville, AR   (06.06.11)
Double standard, true. The threats made daily by Iranian leadership indicates a lack of sense or an unstable violent regime. They are still stoning and hanging people. Not reasonable enough to trust with real big bombs. I too am opposed to nukes.
75. Obama Lies
GozieBoy ,   Los Angeles USA   (06.06.11)
Obama and Hillary BOTH swore that they woudl never allow Iran to build a nuclear bomb. This is apparently yet more LIES by the Obama admin - eachg one much more deadly than the previous one.
76. Fool me once...
Michael Rivero ,   Honolulu, USA   (06.06.11)
The warhawks were making the same claim about Iraq, remember? and that turned out to be a lie. Iran became an Islamic republic in 1797. Since that time, they have not invaded any other countries. The USA and Israel cannot make the same claim. So who is the real threat to world peace here?
77. MAD
TK ,   USA   (06.06.11)
MAD only worked because the people were not fanatics in their beliefs. When the leader of a country talks non-stop about wiping another country off the face of the earth, do you really think MAD is a deterrent?

(Obviously you mean 1979) Answer to your question: IRAN is the real threat to world peace. It threatens the annihilation of another country. We have much more information about Iran's manufacturing of nuclear weapons, missles, etc, than we had of Iraq's. They export terrorism (Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria) with money, materiel, and 'advisors'. Israel did not "invade" (def: to enter for conquest or plunder), that is what the arabs did and have been doing since 637AD. Israel defended and won. Nice try, but you are off base. Others aren't fooled.

Every World War that has been started has been started over a place that has been a hotbed of fighting. It's looking like the middle east will be the new theater of WW3

"There is no evidence that Iran is enriching to 90%. That is fear-mongering. Having a capability does not show intent. " You aren't in the intelligence business. Just because there is no evidence that YOU have personally been shown, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. To your second "point", the "intent" has been shown time and again to those who actually pay attention. Just look at the public policies and statements of the gov't of Iran, and you will see the "intent" clear as day. I am no fan of war, but that doesn't close my mind to the fact that it is sometimes necessary.

"There are some very powerful people who will want a war to help push along their evil agendas. " Yeah, there are. They are in control of the Iranian government. Pull your head out of your @$$...
83. Double-Standard
Ricky Clinch ,   Tampa, USA   (06.06.11)
My Canadian neighbor, since your borders are easier to breach than those of the US, I imagine that if anyone in this hemisphere were to be attacked with an Iranian nuke it would be Canada, somewhere close to the US border. MAD has worked between the US and Russia because we have some sense of civility and feel a level of respect for human life. The US used the a-bomb to slam the door on the end of WWII, then spent the next 40 years repairing and supporting the country that was bombed. I guarantee you that the animals in charge in Iran have no respect for any life but their own and have no moral inhibitions that will govern their use of any nukes they may produce. Their religion is not the cause of this lack of morals, it is the shroud that they hide behind for protection. That way any blind followers will automatically support them by defending something that is not being threatened.
84. the US has plenty of troops
Wyatt ,   USA   (06.06.11)
The US has around 177k troops around the world and another million or so in the US on base or on the water. We have, by far, superior hardware. They have an air force consisting of a hodgepodge of 70's era jets and a few mirage from France. Their tanks are based on old us and russian tanks and poorly built. Their navy has no battleships and few subs and strike-capable ships. What makes you think the US could not successfully invade Iran Mark of Lewiston? It would be as easy as what we did to Iraq's military. Not that it is our responsibility alone to deal with this but if the rest of the world is going to let Iran build, and then eventually use, nuclear missiles on Israel then it may be up to us.

Bigizz - you wrote too much. I believe you could have ended your sentence like this... "We will look back and ask? (sic) what really did the Obama Administration due(sic). " The man got elected and since then has done nothing but look the other way, golf, eat and bow to his foreign superiors. He is the most do nothing president in modern times. He is destined to be known for saying "Bush did it." and have no greater achievement or any more memorable quote.
86. Iranean nukes
Jim Jensen ,   Grants Pass, OR, USA   (06.06.11)
That's what we and Israel get for not bombing Iran back into the stone age when we had the opportunity. If they think nothing of strapping on a bomb vest and detonating it in a crowded open air market they wouldn't think twice about detonating a nuke.
87. Seize Iran's oil to fund occupation.
Daniel ,   Los Angeles, USA   (06.06.11)
It's time for the USA to prep its nuclear arsenal to launch with a trigger finger if Russia/China try to stop the occupation. The USA and Israel cannot survive the nuclear Iran being sponsored by Russia to destroy us. This is wartime now.
88. @double standard
James ,   US   (06.06.11)
so easy for our canadian brethren to sit safe behind their borders that are secured by the US to say such things while the US does the dirty work of the world.
89. #4. LebanonPride -- Why are you in Canada?
Mike ,   Nowhere, FL   (06.06.11)
Intent is proven by the consistent threats emanating from Ahmadinejad. Anyone who thinks otherwise is foolish and does so at their own peril.
