1. Only an idiot leftist like Haber would suggest
Danny ,   Tel-Aviv   (06.13.11)
Israel intervene in Syria! No one is even talking about the option. Why does the radical leftists stick their noses in everything not connected to them?
2. The first sane conclusion in an article that Haber writes
Marco ,   Spain   (06.13.11)
But even here his reasons for not intervening in Syria are wrong. Israel should not intervene in Syria first and foremost because the more this drags on the weaker Syria becomes, regardless of the final outcome, and this is good for Israel to neutralize one enemy. All the other reasons are secondary.
3. The devil we know is worse than the devil we don't know.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (06.13.11)
In other words, the Assad regime is as bad as it gets. We have every reason to want to see his regime fall. Having said that, whatever follows Assad will still be hostile to Israel. And, if Assad does not fall, his hostility will increase, become more aggressive. The fall of the Assad regime would be, however, a setback for Iran. There is another scenario posible as well. Syria could break up into fiefdoms with war-lords controling various regions of Syria. Some of these war-lords could be quite extreme. What happens if they seize control of advanced weaponry, like missiles with chemical warheads? Our actual interest is not in taking sides, our interest is in destroying Syria's military capabilities. Would this force a confrontation with Iran? Maybe. But that confrontation may not be avoidable anyway.
4. What exactly is the point of this article?
NB ,   TA, Israel   (06.13.11)
Nobody is planning to intervene in Syria. It's not even clear how Israel can do it as the protesters did not ask for Israel's help. People these days write articles on non issues just for the sake of writing something.
5. Turkey=>Syria
joshua mangold ,   kabul, afghanistan   (06.13.11)
too late brothers, turkey supposed to go in north syria this week and set up buffer zone for refugees
6. To # 1 & 4
Rachel ,   US   (06.13.11)
Both of you are right. No one is even talking about intervening in Syria. Only a leftist would write such a foolish article.
7. The Syrians must be left alone...
Chris Rettenmoser ,   Bayerisch Gmain Germ   (06.13.11)
Assads regime is a satellite of Iran and when it dissolves, Iran loses big and any possible replacement of the current regime cannot make things worse, as they are right now... It's an easy gamble... But an Israeli intervention would be the MOST DUMBEST thing to do, as it would be a life saver for Assad...why....because the Arabs would just close ranks and fight the "Zionists"...
8. This is merely the 1st revolution
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (06.13.11)
There will be many more, Syria is ungovernable. Too many tribes that all hate each other. Stability will only come when Syria breaks apart into small enough pieces. The idea that outsiders can have any say is crazy.
9. Why would Israel...
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (06.13.11)
...overthrow the Syrian regime? Being surrounded by dictatorships is the best excuse there is to continue stalling the peace process with the Palestinians. With Saddam, Mubarak and Ben Ali ousted, and Gaddafi soon-to-be history, the Jewish state is running out of excuses. No country in the world will do more than Israel to try and save the al-Assad regime.
10. Be on the right side of history and the right side of truth
gb ,   usa   (06.13.11)
The best thing Israel can do is just tell the truth- use intelligence to give the world as accurate picture of what is happening in Syria as possible. How many Iranian and Hezbollah goons are in Damascus killing Syrians? Tell the world, yes, we could intervene but we will never give a lump of feces like an Assad a chance to blame Israel for his criminal regime's acts. It is not Israel's mission to intervene in the Syrian revolution but it is Israel's duty to democracy and the hope that one day Syria might be governed by her people to make life as bad as possible for Assad and keep shining the truth on the regime: Assad bank accounts and personal wealth are perfect things to leak to the public debate now. If Assad goes down, Israel might have a Syrian neighbor that can be a friend or perhaps less of an enemy. Assad is the enemy of his people and is destroying his country rather than cede power- this is a dictator with no notion of his nation, only to abuse power for his own ends. Imagine driving to Damascus from Haifa across a Golan without soldiers, as long as Assad is power, this cannot happen, perhaps one day, it will. The dictators of the region, Nasrallah, Assad and Ahmadinejad and others are a cancer on humanity and holding 300 million people from their future.
11. A wise general once said:
Allan ,   Delay Beach, FL   (06.13.11)
"Don't help your enemy while he commits suicide".
12. The smart money ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.13.11)
... would bet on Turkey to intervene. They are not interested in having more refugees fleeing across the border, and they have always treated Syria as an Anatolian fiefdom. But they are going to tread very lightly -- they know Israel will be watching events closely -- and it would not serve anyone's best interests to irritate Israel.
13. Israel shouldn't, but a US drone should hover over assad's
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (06.13.11)
palace right after a phone call from obumma saying: "Leave the country, NOW, you have 8 hours."
14. this looks like one of those rare instances...
Rafi ,   US   (06.13.11)
... where both right & left in Israel agree: stay out - no reason or basis for Israel to risk its blood & treasure in the Syrian imbroglio.
15. ISRAEL IS WASTING A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (06.13.11)
Intervene in Syria?????No way!!!!! It must be be massively in Israel's interests for the world to see the real tyrannical, brutal, lying nature of the Syrian regime. This is a propaganda bonanza for the State of Israel and it should be milking it for all it can get. BUT IT ISN'T....FOR GOODNESS SAKE,GET ON WITH IT!!!! THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!

michaelpielet ,   boca raton, Israel   (06.14.11)
Good advice for Israel, Whatever Haber advises do the opposite.
17. nobody wants to get involved
zionist forever   (06.13.11)
In Libya Britain and France were just itching to jump in before Gaddafi had killed as many people as Assad. Obama was dithering on what to do and so far hadn't even condemned Assad by name. The British & French wanted to lead the way in a moral crusade to save the people of Libya. Everybody thought this military operation will last one maybe two weeks and then Gaddafi will either go into exile or be killed and we will come out of it conquering heros and get a huge boost in the polls. Its now been three months, they have gone way beyond their UN mandate of a no fly zone and have even resorted to bombing Gaddafi's compound and are now openly saying ( illegally ) that he must be killed. It has cost billions of dollars and the costs keep mounting. There is no clear goal in what to do after Gaddafi is gone because all that unites the rebels is the desire to see Gaddafi out. It may still end in civil war. Nobody wants to risk Syria turning into another Libya. In Syria there are also other issues like outside support Assad might get from Hizbollah, is there a risk of sparking a war with Israel. The only organized opposition to Assad is the Muslim Brotherhood so he could be replaced by isalmists. The result is nobody wants to get involved in Syria. So far after months of killing the toughest talk we have heard from Obama & David Cameron is Assad must make reforms or resign. As for the article calling for non intervention because syrians will be moaning about how it took foreign intervention to get rid of Assad. i suggest that the author tells that to the people being butchered right now. They are more interested in staying alive than how history will look back The authors conclusions on why there should be no foreign intervention are totally flawed..
18. #3 - Terry, I beg to differ...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (06.14.11)
Gaza is as worse as it gets and I wouldn't be surprised if Syria went the way of an Islamic theocracy either following the demise of the Assad dictatorship. I would venture to guess that the only thing that is keeping the Assad regime in power is the fact that the Alawite sect they represent now has its back to the wall and G-d only knows what they'll do to keep themselves on the former side of a "kill-or-be-killed" situation and not on the latter. Either way, I agree that keeping Syria's military capabilities in check is crucial to stability here, but the crueler and more dastardly the Assad regime behaves will probably end up decreasing the amount of aid it receives from Iran, Russia, China, etc. When all is said and done, Assad remaining in power is in Israel's best interest, but this doesn't mean that we should dirty our hands to acheive this end...
19. Interfering in other countries !
haitham ,   germany   (06.14.11)
What a language? instead of concentrating on peace and solving consisting problems , you suggest creating new problems . Please concentrate on Israeli own problems mainly occupation and refugees , these are the core issue for all Mideast problems.
20. Syria
David ,   America   (06.14.11)
Damascus will become a ruinous heap! I am willing to help in any way I can.
21. #12 Sarah B
Albrecht Klein ,   Germany   (06.14.11)
The Turkeys are stupid, but not so stupid to mess with Iran by intervening in Syria.
22. haitham #19 you first
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (06.14.11)
Germany is not Israel either. Mind your own business. As for occupation - we are willing for the Arabs to return to their own lands at any time.
23. While we speak...
Froike ,   NY USA   (06.14.11)
Rumor has it that as we post our 2 cent comments, The US Navy has a task force maneuvering off of the Med. Allegedly, part of the TF is a Marine Expeditionary Force....So, Obama may be just posturing, but his warning to Assad is clear. Israel will have sit this one out...but at least the Hizbollah Cockroaches know that it's not just Israel that wants to annihilate them!
24. Some involvement is necessary
Yakov   (06.14.11)
to the extent of getting any remaining Jews out of Syria, and thus out of harm's way. So that extent, I do think it necessary. I don't want to see Assad there any more than the others here. But, I think a wait and see would be prudent, unless something happens at the northern border.
