Every day Tom Friedman has another 'big idea' to solve a major world - problem. Unfortunately many of those ideas relate to Israel and are insensitive to its real world situation. This particular is simplistic, and addresses only a small part of the problems involved in the conflict. It is also potentially dangerous to Israel .

why does he not know the result? The Arabs (not Palestinians who did not exist then) rejected it. In 48 it would have given them statehood, as it did Israel, so what makes him think they will not reject it again? But more than that, 48 is past. Things have changed on the ground. Parts of that resolution were tried (International Jerusalem) which did not work. All in all 181 failed. Why propose the same thing? He's run out of ideas.

Why even go for a third state in "Palestine"? As long as nearly 80% of Palestine is conveniently left out of the equation, all commentary is irrelevent. Why does Abdullah II get to pretend that "Jordan" is a real state, and anything other than most of Palestine? His great grandfather always knew it was Palestine. So why does Israel have to carve off more land, when the Arabs and specifically Palestinians already have most of it??? Why is this ignored?
