1. How ridiculous, by same logic Brazilians are super rich
Nour ,   One-State   (06.29.11)
I mean, there are grandiose shopping malls in the suburbs of Rio and SP. Does that mean there is no poverty and inequity in Brazil today? With regards to Gaza, the author should look at World Bank figures of how what percentage of Gazans live on under a dollar a day. Poverty Line? But nice try, another NYT/YNET stunt.
2. We love life whenever we can
Salma ,   Palestine   (06.29.11)
Even if Gaza became the Manhattan of the Middle East, the campaign to send freedom flotillas to free Gaza the People, the sea, and the air will not stop. "We love life whenever we can. We dance and throw up a minaret or raise palm trees for the violets growing between two martyrs. We love life whenever we can. We steal a thread from a silk-worm to weave a sky and a fence for our journey. We open the garden gate for the jasmine to walk into the street as a beautiful day. We love life whenever we can. Wherever we settle we grow fast-growing plants, wherever we settle we harvest a murdered man. We blow into the flute the color of far away, of far away, we draw on the dust in the passage the neighing of a horse. And we write our names in the form of stones. Lightning brighten the night for us, brighten the night a little. We love life whenever we can" by Mahmoud Darwish.
3. the truth comes out- from the NY times no less!
nadav ,   tel aviv   (06.29.11)
now the world knows that Hamas is lying about "starving children" etc! Pallywood runs a good propaganda campaign with eager Leftist audiences, but one can NEVER hide the truth forever! It only takes one Honest Reporter to blow the whistle! Now we also know the flotillas are provocations and propaganda!
4. there is NO humanitarian crisis in gaza!
kate ,   CA   (06.29.11)
even the UN stated that mounth ago. i don't get it, what is the gaza flotilla goal now????
5. Lies and tricks
Ashraf ,   Gaza   (06.29.11)
Lies and tricks of the State of Israel, the Israeli occupation continues to lie to themselves and try to fool the world
6. No. 4 Kate
NYC Girl   (06.29.11)
Good question. The answer is that the flotilla is what it always was...a provocation and an attempt to force Israel into taking defensive measures that the media can then cynically turn into some sort of a "war crime" on the part of the Israeli government. Frankly, it's surprising that the NYT didn't spike this article since it doesn't fit their narrative of the poor, long-suffering Palestinians being oppressed by the evil Israelis. Biggest bunch of bullshit ever.
7. this gaps between rich and poors exist even in america!
lauren fisher   (06.29.11)
in the south of israel there are many poor jewish families, who even don't have food to put on the table . i never heard them complaining on a humanitarian crisis. just like anywhere else it's not about oppresion it's about creating jobs and stability with the other side so everyone can enjoy prosperity. the gazans brought it on themselves!
8. It shows how ridicule these flotilla-idiots are.
robert renders ,   belgium   (06.29.11)
9. I said, hey Joe take a walk on the wild side.
Noodles ,   Coney Island   (06.29.11)
10. @2 Flotillas won't stop...but, will be stopped.
(06.29.11)
11. Perpetualy negative Salma
Israeli grandma   (06.29.11)
Get off an Israeli news-site and use some of your plentiful spare time to do some social work for your disadvantaged cousins trapped by their Arab bretheren in artificially maintained "refugee camps"
12. IF there is any sort of such crisis - it must be comming
Christina   (06.29.11)
due to Hamas corruption!
13. #10 big difference between the two.
Salma ,   Palestine   (06.29.11)
I trust that you will realize that we and our friends will not fail the test :P
14. #13 You've failed for 70 years
Mr. Reasonable   (06.29.11)
Do you know what loss aversion is? sunk cost?
15. Poverty in Brazil
Raul ,   Rio, Brazil   (06.29.11)
Yes there is poverty and inequality in Brazil. But, as in Gaza, it is due to poor and corrupt politics and politicians and not due to any external factor.
16. Gaza is not Israel's problem
Menachem ,   Israel   (06.29.11)
Gaza is far from the poorest place on earth but it remains a poor third-world society and the "credit" goes to its Arab Moslem inhabitants and not Israeli non-existing "occupation".
17. #14 Mr. unreasonable
Salma ,   Palestine   (06.29.11)
how did we fail ? Golda Meir used to say there is no such thing as a Palestinian people, next September the world governments will recognize the Palestinian state along the 1967 lines. you've drown too deep in your own illusions.
18. The fact that so much can be smuggled...
(06.29.11)
Only proves that the siege serves no purpose but to apply collective punishment upon millions of innocent civilians. Clearly if they can bring in items as large as cars through tunnels, the siege is not preventing the smuggling of weapons as Israel claims; but rather only imposes undo hardship upon those most vulnerable. This article proves beyond any doubt that Gaza siege is nothing but collective punishment and should be ended
19. The untold story of Gaza's bloom
Niss ,   UK   (06.29.11)
This artical should be shown to the media around the world (if they will show it)and to the all the people who are joining the cruise to Gaza
20. To no.1
Johnny ,   Nazareth   (06.29.11)
Ohh did they put you lefty in the corner ??? Why you won't then organize a flotilla to Brazil ??? You know that Gaza suffers from obesity problems, not according to me, according to the U.N !! You know that 90% percent of the muslim world in the middle east doesn't earn more than 3-5 dollars a day ?? That's why we're seeing much anger from the people towards the arab regims. It's not Israel's fault, it's the muslim fault, it's in their blood to treat badly their people....
21. #15 Agreed. Gaza poverty mainly brought about...
Nour ,   One State   (06.29.11)
By the occupation and siege. Even tax money belonging to the PA is routinely held by Israel as blackmail leverage. This is not another 'Israel bashing' post but mere facts confirmed independently by the World Bank. If theres no free trade there will never be real prosperity anywhere. But of course, regardless of the underlying reasons behind Gaza and WB not attaining their potential, there are those even within Pal society who benefit from the status quo explaining the normal haves and have nots reality similar to the Brazilian example.
22. @1 - Egypt vs. Gaza
Chaim ,   NYC   (06.29.11)
Many people in Egypt live on about $3/day and I don't see any flotillas heading for that part the Arabic world, only to Gaza which is ruled by Hamas who also blew up the agricultural greenhouses left intact by Israel for Gazans to use and to prosper but instead they blew it up just to show that they: HATE ISRAEL MORE THAN THEY LOVE THEMSELVES.....
23. #17 It is Writen
Shmuel ,   Maale Adumim -ISRAEL   (06.29.11)
That the whole world will believe the lies against Israel. That does not make them the truth!
24. The UN cash cow - Gaza
Jonny ,   Cape Town   (06.29.11)
And what do they contribute to the welfare of their fellow citizens. As I have always said and beleived, GAZA is just big business for the UN, a huge, agency wallowing in cash hand outs, with plenty of jobs for pals.No Gaza problem, no UNRWA. And that my friends would not go down well with the fatcats. So, as relief work in other areas of the world ais stunted by lack of finance, the GAZA UN fatcats are sucking up more and more. Leaches is the word that comes to mind, sanctioned and controlled by the UN
25. to Nour #1
Arn ,   Yehud, Israel   (06.29.11)
In one of those very rare instances when the NYT has an unguarded moment and prints something factual... something out of line with the tons of pr rubbish you invent... the sky caves in on you. How much happier you would be with a Gaza sans hotels, shopping malls, expensive cars and paved streets! Oh for the days of open sewers and a donkey at every door. Eh? And how much happier would you be if ships laden with anti-aircraft missiles from Iran had free access to the Gaza port! And I don't know why you, of all people, have a complaint against Ynet . Who better advertises your agenda than they do?
26. #1, #5 I will explain
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (06.29.11)
Gazans spend most of their money, time and effort on murdering Jews, not on work. Despite this, Gazans are in the top 5% of wealthy Arabs and are certainly more wealthy than Syrians, Egyptians, Jordanians, Moroccans, Tunisians and Iraqis, although they trail far behind Israeli Arabs. Imagine how rich they'd be if the Gazans wanted peace.
27. #17 Salma, continued failure guaranteed.
Mr. Reasonable   (06.29.11)
Recognizing the so-called state will not put a blessed thing on the ground. For that you're going to have to come up with concessions. But Palestine on paper is better than nothing, eh?
28. Don't touch their victimhood!!!!!
HaifaGuy   (06.29.11)
Or else!!!!!!!
29. pictures
