31. #30.exUK: The name of the "someone"
Tom ,   USA   (07.12.11)
The person's name you are referring to is Martin Niemöller a German Lutheran pastor. He was a supporter of the Nazi Germany and Hitler after which he switched to Stalin-ism and earned the Lenin Peace Prize in 1966. Either way he was a supporter totalitarianism and was a disgrace to humanity regardless of his frequently quoted "bon mots' (clever saying). Is this man your idol?

No ,and I dont need to know ALL history,in order to see the truth in this saying, which has been applicable to anyone who was silent in the face of injustices ,just because it did not AT FIRST affect them personally..No-one can be 100% right or wrong, and this guy's saying was applied to all those who stood by silently when bad stuff was happening in Germany and other places.

A voice of normalcy - I suggest you keep a ticket ready to leave because that's what it might boil down to. The world does not accept an occupying Israel and it will less accept a fascist Israel. A good recipe for the next conflict and they say they want peace.Lieberman is the harbinger of racial hatred, amongst others, but what will it take for them to see the light, 1000 dead, 10,000 dead? The future does not bode well and these so called MK's are playing with our lives. I wonder where it will all end.
34. What is all the fuss about?
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.13.11)
For decades, the left has had a stranglehold on Israeli politics. Corruption was rife -- remember all the nonsense with the Histadrut -- and government leaders taking bribes and receiving "gifts" was not unheard of. The true hallmark of a democracy is that it reflects the changing thinking in the country. The left cannot have its way all the time; the right cannot have its way all the time. What one is seeing in Israel is not fascism, it is not totalitarianism or dictatorship -- it is simply the emergence of right wing thought as the dominant political view. Maybe in five years the pendulum will swing back the other way; maybe Israel will become more centrist. But, frankly -- I doubt it. Sixty years of the tyranny of the left has been more than enough. Much, much more. There are ever-increasing numbers of people who don't want to give up the settlements, and who have seen the sad outcome of giving back hard-fought and hard-won land. Look at Egypt; look at Gaza. It cost us blood to give back Sinai, but at least we got thirty years of relative quiet as a result. That has not been the case with Gaza, and it will not be the case with Judea and Samaria. Besides, think of what it would do to the heart and soul of the country if you try and forcibly relocate 700,000 settlers? At some point, common sense has to prevail, and the ersatz "Palestinians" will have to take their lumps resulting from seven decades of unrelenting terror, two intifadas, inept self-rule and some of the worst decision-making that has ever "graced" the world. Not our problem. I think the political trends in Israel reflect our growing impatience and annoyance with ersatz "Palestinian" intransigence, ceaseless demands for concessions and failed self-rule. No more. There is no fascism in Israel; there is a growing reluctance to play tiddlywinks with the ersatz "Palestinian" and their supporters in the left. Those who feel strongly that this is wrong are free to join the terrorist friends in Jordan or Gaza. I'm not sure that they make much in the way of a positive contribution to Israel. There is nothing positive or contributory about the likes of Tali Fahimi, Dror Feiler or Yonatan Shapira. They are empty barrels -- and like all empty barrels, they make the most noise. The hard-core left who engage in what is essentially treasonous activities should take a look around at other countries in the world, where there is constant shifting from left to right and back again -- the U.S. certainly does; so does Germany, France, the U.K., Japan -- examples abound -- why should Israel -- surrounded by violent terrorists and countries in a declared state of war -- not enjoy the same right to adopt harsher policies because Israel's seditious left wing is so intent on selling out the country?
35. the bias of ynet's reporting is so obvious.
pinchas ,   boston   (07.13.11)
you only quote all the "it's anti-democratic!" false alarms from Meretz, Labor, Tibi and his ilk.... but you totally leave out quotes from those who are introducing the bill. I think you should look up the word "balance" in the dictionary. Didn't you ever learn in Journalism101 that news reports are not meant to be editorials or op-eds? The same overt tilt was obvious in your reportage of the boycott bill enacted in the Knesset. 90% of the article quoted all the enraged lefties. Ynet-- WHEN will you grow up and become a mature, adult media outlet that one can seriously respect??
36. Excelent post, Pinchas, thank you!
Daneil ,   Formerly Israel   (07.13.11)
37. #6 a weak, superficial analogy
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (07.13.11)
I was actually born in the Soviet Union, to to Soviet dissidents, so I happen to know a little about Bolshevik tactics. Even taking Liberman's bill out of context, it does not merit the comparison. The Communists, lacking all morality and driven only by hunger for power, worked by division and conquest. They cozied up to lots of small groups they secretly hated, convinced them to crush the one slightly larger group they secretly hated, then chose the next victim from among their supposed allies, convinced the remaineder to turn on those, rinsed and repeated. (This, by the way, is the fate that eventually befell the USSR's liberal Jewish inteligensia, after it was stupid enough to support the Communists first against the aristocracy, then against the clergy, then against the burgoisie, then against rural libertarians (and of course against the liberal west). Going head-on, and largely alone, against the entire anti-zionist spectrom (Foreign NGOs, domestic NGOs, and domestic Arabs) while simultaneously mainitainin a hard-line and internationally unpopular foreign policy is the exact opposite of Soviet tactics, and suggests they are being driven by honest ideology. Now, putting them back in context, a look at Israel's geo-political situation suggests that they are being driven at the very least by common-sense suspicion (though I would argue they result from a great and profound understanding of the situation). Now, having said that, and noting that everything is being done democratically, are Liberman's actual tactics a little frightning and dangerous? Yes they are, just like lighting camp-fire in the wilderness. If you're careless (or crazy) you'll burn everything down, starting with yourself. On the other hand, if you're too scared to do it, you'll die of exposure.
38. How about a probe in to Lilbermans bank account
Haim ,   Israel   (07.13.11)
Oh sorry i forgot there is already a criminal investigation in to the many millions that somehow managed to find its way in to his bank account. Im sure the general public await the resutls of that inquiry, which will finally confirm that Liberman is the biggest crook Israeli polictis has ever endured.
39. Palestinians indoctrinated with hate and left is silent
Ken Jurist   (07.13.11)
Like Germans, Palestinians indoctrinated with notion that Jews are not human Since 2001, there were more than 150 homicide bombing attacks against Israeli civilians and another 500 which were stopped by Israeli troops. The result was 1557 murder victims and 17,000 maimed Israelis for life. No less than 84% of the Palestinians supported the Mercaz Harav yeshiva massacre in 08. This shows more and more the Palestinians have no humanity. They slaughter Israeli civilians on buses, shopping centers, disco's, pizzeria's, hotels, holocaust survivors celebrating Passover. Jews are commonly referred to as sons and daughters of pigs and apes. Streets in Gaza and Ramallah are named after homicide bombers who tear life from the defenseless. This is who the left supports. Sickos.
40. the phony left needs to be investigated they are up to no go
rachel ,   usa   (07.13.11)
good , and I am a leftists ! no a phony leftist .
41. the useful idiots don't realize Israel is in constant war!
rachel ,   usa   (07.13.11)
42. Protect ourselves
Aba ,   Jerusalem   (07.13.11)
If we don't stop the virulent antisemitism of these 5 th columnists who will. One can't attack Israeli from within and proceed with impunity.
43. "Left" or "Right" or "Patriotic"?
Michael ,   California, USA   (07.13.11)
Israel Beitenu party consists of ex-Russian communists who are nationalistic and anti-communist. This party was formed on progressive secular platforms, promising to fight for laws such as civil weddings, work for separation of religion and state, demanding service of religious on a par with immigrants and seculars in Israel. It is crazy to see this party pushing laws restricting "leftist" platforms. Why is a two-state solution "leftist"? Why is opposition to settlements "leftist"? Why is desire for peace with the Arabs "leftist"? If anything, these are patriotic concepts which can save Israel from another war, from many more dead and wounded in the future. A platform of Peace is patriotic, not leftist.
44. What is the Leftist camp afraid of?
Paul ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.13.11)
Anti-leftist bill? Is that what it is, or perhaps, it is Israel's attempt to not only keep away enemy rockets, but enemy money. Money greedily accepted by those who believe righteousness is to 'hate thou brothers like thou hate thyself'.
45. exUK with A VERY HIGH IQ
Alf Red ,   Londonistan   (07.13.11)
Dear, can you - having your views on "settlements" - explain what is the "Israel proper"? And if you do - I would like to hear from you. If you don't - what are you doing in Israel? Britain is much more settled country with much more developed state (not surprising). If you do not agree with G-d given rights - then what? You are then living in a colony-state that has no right to exist. Do you need a very high IQ to understand that Judea and Samaria ARE the heart of Jewish national history? You are one strange and sorry occupant of Arab Tel Aviv...
