If you read that talkback again, I think you'll find she was saying that Orthodox Jews need to be more fearful because they can be targeted simply because it's obvious they're Jewish. Whether or not that's the case in New York, I'm not really sure. But she obviously isn't saying what you though she was.

I made Aliyah from the USA. Of the many wonderful benefits of living here in Israel, safety is a very big one. Israel and Israeli's enjoy freedom from this kind of violence, so common in the US. It is not isolated to NY. Look at Miami, LA, Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas, etc.... My heart goes out to the family. No words can help. The collective tears of Jews are with the family!

To begin with, it does not take all that skill to buy white shirt and black pants and grow a beard, or to get frum female dresses and head-covering. Not only that, but we have quite a lot of enemies that speak Hebrew very fluently. Many of them, when disguised, don't stand out. I seem to recall this sort of attack has occurred also in Israel, and with adult victims, ie, it must not have been so obvious. Second, you have assumed my comment was anti-haredi, it has not occurred to you that this kid would never have trusted someone who is obviously a goy (e.g. a priest, an Africa-American, an Asian...) or who is obviously a frei jew. He would not even have asked them for directions. Of course we should not trust anyone, but this particular boy would not have trusted anyone who did not look like an observant jew. Third, the details of this story will emerge in due time, but if some news are confirmed, it is a double tragedy. We have no idea of the motives, but if this man had problems, any sort of problems, be them character flaws, mental illnesses, etc. - it is also important to protect him. He would never have acted unless he had the opportunity, We can not automatically trust someone (and we can neither automatically distrust someone, but the second one is not a determination fit for a 8-yr-old child).

and besides, the kid lived there. What was he supposed to do, stay in the house all his life? Kids have learn at some point in their childhood. I was riding the subway by myself at that age.

The kid wouldn't be lured by a non-jew, he had to be a orthodox jew in order to get Lieby to go with him, and police just released the name of the guy, and he IS a orthodox jew.

I know many mothers who do this and work at jobs that allow them to or they are stay at home mothers. The world is a dangerous place and an adult should be walking with children when they are outside the home. A mother whose husband owns a Postal Express outlet told me she takes her children to school and is there to take them home when school is out. They go no where without supervison. That worked since one son is in medical school and another one is in Middle School. She allows her children to associate with no one at the schools and they have lots of study time at home to excel in school. Unless the people the children associate with are the same religion or near kinspeople, she does not allow an association. That protects them from the ways of the world that are evil and puts the family as the center of their social activities. Family sports such as family golf day or family tennis or family bicycling are the sports her children are allowed to participate in to strengthen the family and protect them from predators.
