1. No choice but...
Sarah B. ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.26.11)
To look else where for a cheap face lift...
2. Doctors have gone too far
dmgold ,   Israel   (07.26.11)
What they are not telling you is how much it costs the state (taxpayer) to train a doctor, about 1 million Dollars per Doctor. Quite frankly they should become liable for any deaths they cause through their recklesness and their strike action. I for one no longer have sympathy for their strike action and believe they as a privilaged grouping in society have gone way too far.
3. Do they have a cause?
James Johnson ,   Beer Sheva, Israel   (07.26.11)
I tend to side with the medical people. But I am basing my decision on hearsay from my neighbors. I would really like to see a list of what the complaints are, what the salary is, what the work hours are, etc. The medical people are the number one important people in the country. They stand head and shoulders above the politicians that take care of themselves.
4. #2 and 3 it really IS a just cause
Noa   (07.26.11)
Some of my friends are doctors and they really work like dogs and they really have only a very modest income - and just add to that that the partner of the doctor has to take care of the kids alone and either can't work full time or pay a fortune in nannies. The fact is that actually, you can't afford to be a doctor because the price is so high. But can Israel afford being a country without doctors?
5. Pay Teachers instead
Jerry   (07.26.11)
Teachers of our children are far more in need of my taxes. The doctors work just as hard as the next person and do not deserve or need more $$.
6. #2 dmgold
jo moor   (07.26.11)
If you talk the talk, then walk the walk: work their hours, carry their responsibilities at their various levels of training and smile when they pay pittance.
7. #4 a just cause
jo moor   (07.26.11)
Noa: you are so correct. If the country trains them well (which they do) then they deserve appropriate remuneration. This will stop them from seeking life styles far west of the eatern board of the mediterranean sea. They are human after all!!
8. #1.Deep peel is more effective and cheaper.
tanya ,   tel aviv israel   (07.26.11)
9. Cottage cheese boycotts and housing have nothing to do with
Abdalla   (07.26.11)
Invading Other people's land . And endangering Israeli citizens . The disengagement from the west bank will be sweeter
10. The strike must end
dan ,   Australia   (07.26.11)
These doctors are holding the State to ransom just like Hezbollah or Hamas.
11. it"s over
leaving Israel soon, ,   Israel   (07.26.11)
my husband is a doctor and i am very happy that he finnaly got a job offer aboard. i really hope that every single doctor open up their eyes and leave the country asap because the israeli society doesn"t need them. we really can live without the israeli grushim!
12. Great idea, that resignation ssubmission
Gideon Reader ,   USA   (07.26.11)
Medical Residents threatening to resign should warmly greet their new and open career paths. I am sure that there is a rewarding future in being an aide in a "walk-in-surgery", or feeding the elderly their gruel in an Assisted Community Living Facility, or gaining noteriety in Cote Ivoire as Bwana Doctore. You **NEED** to learn your trade before you can in fact trade on your skills. Residents? Not quite there are they?
13. so resign already they were not meant to be as doctors
(07.26.11)
bye-bye now
14. Huge responsibility, little pay and respect
Yakov ,   Tel Aviv   (07.26.11)
As a senior level medical specialist, and professor of medicine, I can understand the frustration these young physicians experience. The practice of medicine requires enormous dedication and responsibility. The truth is that few non-medical people can appreciate what it is to be a resident. 80 hour (or longer) work weeks, constant life-or-death decision's, volumes of literature to digest and the reward is low pay. Indeed, many long-practicing physicians still have 2 jobs! Rightly, when our loved ones become ill, we demand the expertise of our physicians. I hate to think that when that time arrives, they have all left for better pastures. We are so fortunate to have an excellent healthcare system, and our caregivers need to be properly remunerated.
15. Understanding
E ,   Tel Aviv   (07.26.11)
It has been a joy to read these talkbacks. I do hope, however, those of you belittling the doctors' plight understand the issue in its entirety. These are not greedy business-people living a life of mediocrity, unhappy they don't have a bigger apartment to relax in on evenings and weekends. No, these are people working 36hour+ shifts quite often, giving up their weekends, and relinquishing their leisure time to take care of the chronically and critically ill, injured, weak, and complaining. They spent a minimum of 6 years learning, then the rest of their lives training and perfecting a craft. I've seen how hard they work, how little they sleep, and how poorly they are able to take care of themselves because they spend their shifts taking care of others, and their free time scrounging together a life for their family. 22 shekels an hour for lifesaving skills and years of training is atrocious, they could exit the career and make more working in a cafe/restaurant, earning tips even beyond their wage. But to put their knowledge to use and to give up their leisure/social/family time for all of you when you need them the most, this should be somehow compensated. yet it is not. Take a moment to put yourselves into their shoes. Don't sleep, don't eat, and don't sit and relax for the next 5 days. Run around between 2100 and 800 fielding 100 calls from every department to stitch this, check out that, and prescribe this, with at least 100 peoples' lives depending on your sleep-deprived decision making skills. Then come back here and comment.
16. Do not treat any m.k.s or their families.
jason white ,   afula, israel   (07.26.11)
Do not treat any members of the ministry of the treasury or their families. It is a sad situation when we see doctors living in apartments and and taxi and truck drivers living in large villas.
17. Give them all 50% raises and be done with it.
David ,   Hartford USA   (07.26.11)
It's money well spent. Why train them at the state's expense only to have them go off to other countries? Keep them here and relatively happy. Israeli medicine is the best in the world BECAUSE of its doctors and students. Keep it that way.
18. The post at No. 1 is not mine
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.26.11)
1. I do not put a period after the "B." 2. I would never make such a pithy and gratuitous statement. Try harder next time, idiot imposter.
