1. this is a misinformed and mis forned article....
Tsarina   (07.27.11)
1. I know of several cases of polygamy amongst the Yemanites who immigated to Israel during the early 1950s 2. Polygamy was clearly forbidden amongst the ashkenazi but not so amongst the Mizrachim 3. Mizrachim are not Sephardim. 4. and now questions: How would the writer of this article define: an ashkenazi married man who has a mistress? Would the writer define that as a man involved in a polygamous situation? In other words give the dramatic effects and accusations against the Mizrachim and Sefardim and look at the behavior of your fine Ashkenazi men!
2. I was once married.....
Al   (07.27.11)
Today I am into short term rentals. Its better than living in a tent.
3. Bedouins already do it!
Lero   (07.27.11)
''Are we about to witness a new phenomenon in Israel in the coming years – one man married to several women?'' The arabs or bedouin in israel already do it with the state of israels approval! so how come its a new phenomenon coming?
4. If Ortho-lights like Brackman & Lubitch permit Kitniyot...
Motty ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.27.11)
... to Ashkenazim under the assumption that as citizens of Israel, the place of the Sepharadi author of the Shulhan Aruch, they are under Sepharadi law - then poligamy would have to be permitted to Ashkenazim as well. They forget though that the Shulchan Aruch was co-authored and published for both the Sepharadim and Ashkenazim, each author recognizing the authority of the other in their respective populaces.
5. Why take a book out when you can join the library?
Avi ,   Israel   (07.27.11)
6. Polygamy was NEVER permitted in Torah
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (07.27.11)
Is it too much to ask for you to learn the difference between polygamy and polygyny?
7. Haredi disregard for Israeli law
Yehudit ,   USA   (07.27.11)
This is a great example of Haredi disregard for Israeli Secular Law. Secular Israelis should fight this practice tooth and nail and expel Israelis who are found guilty of this practice. If more Haredi men begin to practice, polygamy, then the Israeli government will be paying more taxes to help support these new and illegal families.
8. It WAS, it IS and it WILL BE
Israeli 2   (07.27.11)
Sex is necessary and beautiful. Men may marry many women. Women may marry one man.
9. you can't have a stable society and have polygamy look at th
rachel ,   usa   (07.27.11)
the arab world .....its one big mess because women are not respected!!!! women are the basic foundation of society and when they are badly treated the whole structure falls apart ....Look at all the countries where women have no value !
10. Woohoo!
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.27.11)
I'm all for polygyny, if they legalize polyandry. I'm already making my list .........
11. A woman multiple men?
Lengualima ,   I   (07.27.11)
Too bad we are in Israel, in the 21st century and wanting to go back at least 3,500 years in history. 1. If we criticize the sexism of Arab societies to fall into the same. 2. If supposedly we are all equal before law will, men and women, what if a man could have several wives, because a woman can not have multiple men?
12. What they want...
Ahron ,   USA   (07.27.11)
People should be allowed to do what they want, if they're not hurting anyone. However, this is not the reasoning of the Rabbi Ovadia in this case. There is an attempt to slowly but surely turn Israel into a Theocracy, and this makes me and other 'sane' people worry for the future state of Israel.
13. The purpose of polygamy
American Sabrah   (07.27.11)
Back then, polygamy was permitted only for the purpose of procreation. Since its the man's responsibility to reproduce, he could take another woman without divorcing his sterile wife. This custom was only halachically outlawed because the Rabbis knew it was causing a lot of financial stress, marital unrest, and sibling rivalry, from an Ashkenasi perspective. Now that women are more financially independent, a lot of them are not rushing to look for a man to take care of them.Courtesy to modern technology, a couple who is having a difficult time conceiving a baby can seek fertility treatments. I'd sooner remain single than compete with another woman for my husband's attention. I thank Rav Gershom in his infinite wisdom for not requiring me to share my husband with another woman.I dont think most men are mentally, physically, emotionally, and psychologically capable of having so many women in their lives.Sex comes with a price tag that most people are not willing to pay. I am proud of my Ashkenasi roots :-) Monogamy is the safer route to go.
14. Poligamy? What a mess!!!!!
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.27.11)
15. #7 Seculars do that illegally and against Torah all the time
(07.27.11)
bringing into the world lots of mamzerim. If Jews are indeed promoting polygamy, at least it's 100% legal according to the Torah - which is what really matters.
16. poligamy
chaim witz ,   brazil   (07.28.11)
I favor poligamy if all parties agree. What would you do today? To put Abraham, Jacob, and Solomon in jail, prosecuted by the State? In the other hand, I do not oppose one woman having several husbands.
17. We should consider polygamy
R ,   Israel   (07.28.11)
The reason supplied was that allowing men to marry multiple wives would solve the problem of women who want but don't have a husband. However, at the nightclubs, women are much more likely to be allowed in free of charge while men have to pay, because there are so many more men on the prowl than women. This would indicate a need to allow polygamy, but in reverse. A woman should have multiple husbands, but men should not have multiple wives. Now don't get all bent out of shape guys. It's just logic.
18. Polygamy makes sense
SteveO ,   Chicago, USA   (07.28.11)
There are huge numbers of single women in their 30's & 40's. Sharing a man is better than not having one at all. I've seen every episode of Big Love. This lifestyle works!!

Gregg ,   Haifa, IL   (07.28.11)
Which countries? I want examples, because sincerely, I don't know what you're talking about
20. Brackman has nothing to do with this article

Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (07.28.11)
30. #7 Before you freak out
Haredi Who Works ,   Dearborn, MI, USA   (07.28.11)
You are ranting and frothing at "Haredim" because this is exactly what YNet wants you to do, but there are no Haredi rabbis endorsing polygamy, This is just a small fringe group of attention-seeking whackos. Does "Code Pink" represent all seculars?
