6. Who are the protesters?
CC   (08.02.11)
The lowlife lumpen-proletariat, the alcoholists, drug addicts, cocaine-heroin addicts, hippies, falr-leftist students, anarchists, antisemites, upper-middle class and higher class yuppie youngsters. Everyone except the hard-working sane majority of the people of Israel. And all supported by the despicable MSM out of their sheer primitive blind hatred of Netanyahu, probably the best Israeli PM in the past 35-40 years...
7. Regulating rents...
(08.02.11)
Once the house owner makes a contract with the renter, the owner must NOT be allowed to increase the rent more than the inflation at the contract renewal date. This law exists in many states of the north America. Why we don't have this law in Israel? In other words, the parties are free to decide the initial rent, but if the contract is renewed after a year, the rent increase must be limited by the inflation rate. And the reasons to end the contract must be regulated. For example the owner can force the renter to leave (at the end of the contract) if he will move in himself, or if he will give his apartment to his son for example. That's perfectly ok. But he cannot refuse to renew the contract just in order to rent the same apartment to someone else with a higher price. You don't need to reinvent the wheel, just copy the law from a european country or from a north american state. And, by the way, we also need anti-trust and anti-cartel regulations and an empowered committee to ensure real competition in the market. The committee must have the right to punish any activity that big companies do to hurt real competition. Among other things, mergers and acquisitions should be closely scrutinized by this committee. And if necessary, holdings must be forced to sell their child companies (especially their banks).
8. An opinion from John Q. Public
William ,   Israel   (08.02.11)
"the list of demands will not be approved until they have discussed it with members of the public" Ok, then here's my opinion: All of the demands are somewhat reasonable, and a few are a sign of ignorance and should be dropped. • Reducing indirect taxes - you mean like VAT? No, it's the most equal tax we actually have. • Investing tax collection surpluses in citizens via state budget - DUMB!! It's called a savings plan and helps cover short falls when the economy goes down and social payment demands increase. • Canceling the national housing committees bill - DUMB!! Rather than cancel it, demand amendments that would both open up land for development AND fix prices, while demanding high quality. If you demand just low-cost housing, you will get cheap, dangerous housing. • Increasing the Construction and Housing Ministry's budget on mortgages and rent, and increasing government aid - Huh??? The govt hands out subsidies for rent and mortgages? They shouldn't. People should live within their means. Why do you think most Western countries are suffering from foreclosures now? • Applying the Free Compulsory Education law to kids from age of three months - Ok. Does this work well with your demand for tax DECREASES? (10 points) • Adding job posts, beds, medical equipment and infrastructures nationwide to match the OECD standard - Agreed! We must meet OECD standards. • Halting privatization of welfare and mental health institutes - No comment • Gradual cancellation of contractual work in the public sector - a selfish demand. There are reasons why contractors are hired. They help cover the unpredictable demand and can easily be released first if the demand drops, basically keeping those with full-time jobs safe. These protesters are demanding the same situation in France where no one wants to hire anyone because firing them is impossible and very costly.
9. #7 - we have a ton of laws - that's not the problem
William ,   Israel   (08.02.11)
the problem is enforcement and a lack of recourse for grievances by renters.
10. #1 These young people are anything but anarchists
steve ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (08.03.11)
This craziness of politicizing this grass roots protest of government run a muck is insane. Instead of looking at the desire for change from the present state of government complicity in greed and payoffs we all should be supporting this middle class revolution in order to maintain a liberal democracy. Compassion for all of our citizens is part of being Jewish. Let us not lose site of this point.
11. #1 avrom
Michael ,   Haifa   (08.03.11)
Could you please give us your learned definition of what an anarchist is
12. Demands?
pasquinel ,   london.canada   (08.03.11)
Don't we all want cheaper beer and wider sidewalks?
13. MOVE
ZICHRON   (08.03.11)
Move to the galil and the north coatal border and create better telavivs which is going to be under war pressure with in ten years and dan gush needs depopulation for national security protection. Move fast,
14. if there is no cottage cheese why not eat foie gras?
BillionaireBob ,   Herzliya Pituach   (08.03.11)
you can have proper bread flown in from Italy, my butler always takes care of expediting this. So I don't understand what the problem is?
15. And foreigners who buy pieds a terre that stand empty...
(08.03.11)
eleven months of the year. Tel Aviv is too CROWDED. Build in the NORTH!
16. Israel is fed up with far left poseurs.
Chaim ,   Israel   (08.03.11)
These far left socialist protestors know they have very few votes to deliver. So they're trying to intimidate the government through street theater. Tell them to wait for elections. Israel is fed up with taking orders from far left poseurs.
17. All the hospitals should be privatiized.
Susan ,   Kfar Saba   (08.03.11)
Assuta and Laniado are not on strike. All the kupat holims can own hospitals, religious groups, charitable groups and/or anyone else who wants to go into the hospital business. Hospitals can negociate prices with kupat holim. Hospitals would compete for patients and doctors would be paid more. We wouldn't have hospitals like Meir that is old, run down and crowded.
18. to#6 Who are the protesters? Fathers Mothers children
Levi ,   Karmiel, Israel   (08.03.11)
The protesters are the ones working in Israel. The average working class Israeli working two jobs to end up still owing bills at the end of the month. The ones paying rents which are 50% higher then most other nations due to what the elite families of Israel are willing to pay us. The ones paying 2 US GREEN BACK DOLLARS for a container of Cottage cheese which costs around 50% less in all other countries. The ones Whose Arnona, Electric, Gas and Food has risen over %30 in the last 4 years alone. The ones making the Elite richer while they banks they own trap us into super high Mortgages and take the rest of our earnings back that they gave us. I work 2 jobs, my wife 2 jobs we live simply. Do not own cars, do not own a house. We can not make it through a month without borrowing either from family or the bank every month. WE ARE THE PROTESTERS. Even though the government wants to put a political agenda on this there is not one as I am a RIGHTEST HARDCORE. But also Honest. People can not survive on the wages we are making. We have worked hard to build this country for our Children they deserve more for their labors also. NO HAND OUTS ASKED FOR JUST FAIRNESS.
19. #6, CC. So true. People who live on Rothschild
tanya ,   tel aviv israel   (08.03.11)
Boulevard complain about heavy marijuana smell.
20. Reduce taxes, increase the budget
E. G. Marsch ,   Nahariya   (08.03.11)
And I want a vacation every year in the South of France paid for by the state!! Who elected these people??? Whom do they represent??? You want to form a leftist party and run for the Knesset, go right ahead. But we don't need more unelected people "representing" us!! We've already got the media and the Supreme Court for that! Stop the anarchy!!!
21. Steve Tel Aviv
Paul ,   London, UK   (08.03.11)
'Compassion for all of our citizens is part of beig Jewish'. Although said with good intent, I'm sure, but I think it's simply part of being human. Let's not claim a monopoly on this eh? It woud be nice however to see such vigour in a demonstration organised against settlements, but hey, I guess this hurts the pocjet more.
22. Demands
nadav ,   tlv   (08.03.11)
They should add to their list: 1) Build more private universities and dormitories in the periphery and centre 2) prohibit non-citizens from buying apartments in densely populated areas 3) Remove VAT on food, books, and baby products 4) Give scholarships to Doctors who will then commit to 5 years of working in local hospitals 5) decentralize the energy grid- let homes and business have fuel cells to store solar and wind energy that they can resell to a smart grid 6) privatize and charterize schools 7) free up government owned land 8) break the oligarchies and cartels 9) increase imports and competition 10) separate religion from state and Stop subsidizing the Haredim!
23. KEEP UP THE PROTESTS
LEVI ,   Karmiel   (08.03.11)
Do not allow these thieves to take away our rights to live free and turn this into a political agenda. The ones talking back against the working class of Israel here are the same ones stealing from your pay every month. They do not want you to change things because it means they will not be able to maintain thier lavish life styles. CHEAPER HOUSING FOR ISRAELIS AND CHEAPER BASIC GOODS. CHEERS AND KEEP IT UP ALL.
24. this is turning into socialist free loading
zionist forever   (08.03.11)
This started as a housing protest based on legitimate demands but each new group brings new demands and is turning a legitimate protest into something for nothing. Lowering VAT ( on what grounds ) Investing tax surpluses in citizens via state budget. Increasing constrution and housing minisitries budget in mortgages and rent, increasing government aid. Free compulsory education from three months. Spending a fortune on hospitals Halting privatization of welfare & mental health institutes Gradual cancelation of contractual work in the public sector Why should it matter if the government uses outside contractors in the pubic sector or if it privatizes health institutions. As long as these services are provided then the government is doing its job. Its non of these people's business if this is done via the private sector or public workers if they don't like it let them stand for election. Who elected this lot to decide what the VAT rate should be or to tell the government how it must spend any tax surplus? free education from three months is just plain crazy, This is a totally unreasonable list of demands and it will involve borrowing billions and making cuts in other areas Bibi needs to tell them straight I will accept these demands on the condition you will accept me raising taxes because it has to be paid for somehow. If you want these things you pay for them in taxes so you decide what matters more taxes or these causes. This protest has turned into a free for all and I am loosing any sympathy I initially had.
25. Housing Costs
David Chester ,   Petach Tikva, Israel   (08.03.11)
This protest started due to the high cost of housing and renting and the others then joined in. This housing problem has bee increasing in severity during all the years I have been here (48) and the cause is very simple. The Israel Lands Authority (ILA) seeks to make the greatest immediate and future gain from selling the land of Israel (which we and our fathers collected KKL (or JNF) money to buy from the absentee arab land owners. This land should now rightly be held for ever for use by the Jewish people not sold to land owners who in turn are speculating in its value, or when the land is being with-held by the ILA from use so that the competition for its use drives up the price. THE LAND SHOULD BE LEASED NOT SOLD and if more of it were available its terribly high present cost would fall to levels where middle class people could manage their mortgague payments over less than half their earnings over 25 years, as at present. Unused land should be taxed, no matter who is stopping its use, according to its value.
