31. Don't you mean Tu B'Av.
Miriam ,   Israel   (08.15.11)
Tish B'Av is the saddest day on the Jewish calender. Not a day to have fun! Shame on the organizers if it really was Tish B'Av!
32. Tisha B'av
Bruce ,   NJ, USA   (08.15.11)
Tisha B'av commemorates the worst tragedies of the Jewish Nation, culminating in the Shoah, resulting from our exhile among the Nations. It is very unfortunate that it is presented and perceived solely as a religious day of observance. Secular Zionism, particularly in its Jabotinksy form, should equally identify with the theme and its importance. This is a failure to educate (by all - the religious have not sufficiently pushed the historical/nationalistic elements and reached out to the nonobservant). Those who properly mourn for Zion will merit seeing it full restoration (bimehera beyameinu).
33. #18 - 100 % correct say no to religious coercion
Haim ,   TA   (08.15.11)
About time they got over it and stopped shoving religion down other peoples throats
34. ORA , maybe a misinterpretation ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.15.11)
The decree was issued on 31 March . Jews had to leave by 31 July , or convert . A traduction , not by me , of the castillan decree . Found it [ google ] at a Sephardic Studies site . Others give the same dates . What provoked your error was that 31 July 1492 was the EVE of Tisha Be'av . Generally we can rely on wikipedia . But i first of all Google it and look at different places . Maybe we met ? Was it near the French library ? Or in the B......ave ?
35. @34 are u adjusting 4 the change between....
(08.15.11)
the Julian Calendar and the Gregorian Calendar? (Presumably you do remember that until October 1582 Europe was used the Julian Calendar. Spain & Portugal remained on the Julian Calendar till later) This is an important question because depending upon which of the two different calendars is used determines how we calculate against the Hebrew calendar, do remember that prior to calculating against the Hebrew calendar one would first have to adjust from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and then run the numbers against the Hebrew calendar.
36. 34 Charles,you are the Google...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.15.11)
expert. Thus i rely on you. Nor and nor.We are not talking about the same park.
37. Tisha B'Av
Maria B ,   Orlando USA   (08.16.11)
Going to a spa is better than going unwashed and praying for a 3rd Temple to resume animal sacrifices.
38. Charles here's the dating
(08.16.11)
according to adjustment between the three calendars. Tisha B'Av date in 5252 corresponds to 11 August 1492 on the Gregorian Calendar and corresponds to 2 August 1492 on the Julian Calendar Please note that the Julian Calendar was used by Spain until 1582. (as an interesting aside Great Britain and its colonies - including what is today the United States did not switch over from the Julian Calendar until 1752)
39. Changed days of mourning to joy!
Eliyahu Konn ,   Powell, OH   (08.16.11)
Looks like they understand Israel becoming a nation again turns the days of mourning into days of joy! Could someone please read Zekharya 7:4-12 and care for the widow, fatherless, ger, and poor, and then rejoice that we have such a land! You will see the 3rd Temple in the happy and blessed faces that turn to Torah.
40. 35 & 38
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.16.11)
I was just copying the dates given in my references . In both cases , Julian or gregorian , the expulsion did'nt take place on Thisha Be'av . And that's the important fact . But thanks for your [ why anonymous ? ] explanations
41. ORA , Thanks for "expert"
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.16.11)
Are you talking about the triangular one ? Sometimes , when talking to those in the media , i think that i'm talking to a wall . I can repeat things many times , but they still return with the same wrong arguments , or give not related answers .
42. @Charles, that was my point u r welcome...
(08.16.11)
still tis important to remember to adjust between Julian and Gregorian for all dates prior to 1582.
43. 41 Charles,i d better talk to a wall..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.16.11)
because it never contradicts . Seriously ,don t give up.Because of those who read those lies, and have to be informed with the truth. I never noticed that this park is triangular. But you are right.
44. perspective
Mark Steinberg ,   NYC   (08.19.11)
birthright is all about exposing kids to positive aspects of judaism and israel. what should they have done, made them fast about a holiday which means nothing to them if they ever even heard of it. Thank would be the anti kiruv. Think beyond your own perspective and get into the head space of a young jew who knows nothing about israel or being jewish.
