1. not "should"... they recommend....
Dana Rothschild ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.01.11)
maybe small, but significant difference...
2. Yeah, right. Sure.
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (09.01.11)
Check's in the mail.
3. "Denial of timely consular assistance"
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (09.01.11)
LOVED that one. Do you think any detainees at Guantanamo have had consular assistance? The short answer is "No." Terrorists are terrorists the world over. They wantonly murder and maim; they HAVE no rights. Here we go again; holding Israel to a different standard. Is it any wonder Israel pays no attention? Who would?
4. Iron pipes and Bats are deadly weapons
Galutia ,   Selah   (09.01.11)
and the video demostrates that the impact of these items weren't just lite taps they intended to injure and kill ... and therefore in the heat of the moment making decisions on correct and measured responses when injury and death of the israeli boarding party was at stake is very questionable. perhaps hind site is better than foresite on the part of the israelis in this case ... I suspect future boardings will see weapons of denial used if bats and pipes come out.
5. The report "recommends"....
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (09.01.11)
.....and recommendations can simply be rejected and ignored. Doesn't look like the Turkish government has come out of this too well. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
6. I have to wonder if those shot in the back or close range
Harry Wright ,   UK   (09.01.11)
were not in physically close combat and actually attacking the first wave of Israeli soldiers. Seems like the Palmer report was in favour of a protracted battle where the IHH terrorists should have been given a chance to finish off killing the Israeli soldiers. Then it would be permissible for them to turn around and face the second wave of soldiers.
7. Does the U.N. do anything except condemn Israel?
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.01.11)
Surprise. The worthless U.N. condemned Israel again as it has hundreds, if not thousands, of times before. Does the U.N. do anything else? It's time to defund the good for nothing U.N. functionaries. So much good could be accomplished with money saved from supporting the loathesome U.N.
8. what consular assistance?
ros ,   israel   (09.01.11)
the terrorists were less then 24 hours in israel, what they want to consul about?
9. Ah yes typical UN
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (09.01.11)
We should pay the war criminals. We should have sunk the damn boat and that would have been legal too. There is absolutely no reason to pay anything. The San Remo Maritime Treaty places the entire blame on the invaders. That is what international LAW states.
10. What do they recommend?
Anjelina ,   Usa   (09.01.11)
Sure Activists were killed I dont deny or even regret their loss of lives, but honestly what do they expect of the Israeli commandoes? Keep they hands up and be murdered? Than what will the world say? Israeli commandoes boarded a peacefull ship and oops slipped each one on the knife or other weapons of the activists? Everyone saw those videos of Mavi Mara. Israel owes an apology to no one who attacked her citizens. A human rights activists cares about the life of another...they do not take the rights of one person and transfer it to another no no no... a human right activists helps another in a peaceful manner without compromising the life of anyone. You GIVE!
11. Israel should disdainfully ignore the
seadog1946 ,   Erie Basin, NYC   (09.01.11)
UN's Palmer Report... except for the parts that cast Israel in a good light.
12. That's an old trick......
AB ,   TheRock   (09.01.11)
Relating one true fact (that the activists on board were violent) so that all the other things said (ie. lies) can be believed. But in this case it is so ridiculous to say that the Israelis over reacted (when their lives were truly threatened) that that old trick simply cannot NOT work. Too bad Palmer was too stupid to realize that. The UN is will UNdo itself soon enough.
13. Taking turns
Ellen ,   Israel/USA   (09.01.11)
Let's see. They were shot multiple times. I guess Israeli soldiers have to learn to take turns. The scenario would, I guess go something like this, Soldier # 1--Help I'm being attacked # 2,3 and 4--okay, wait a second--before we all shoot and hit him with more than one bullet whose turn is it to shoot-you # 3, okay--kill him Soldier # 5--Help Hmm, let's give # 2 a chance, everyone hold your fire it is # 2s turn. Now if the above is ludicrous, so is the idea that when soldiers are fighting for their lives they should make sure that only one shoulder shoots in an effort to save a comrade! Note to # 7--the short answer to your question ---NO they do not!
14. Kurdistan is our Ally, we dont need Turkey
Moshe ,   USA   (09.01.11)
Kurdistan is our ally not turkey who sent terrorist on the Marvimara to do what they are doing to the Kurdish people.
15. Uncle Turk should pay Israel
Muhammed ,   Mecca   (09.01.11)
16. palmer's report
alexi   (09.01.11)
palmer's report will now be spun by the lying duo o of erdogan and dovotogolu and their admirers in barak, merridor and surprisingly begin and steinitz. Turkel commision to my knowledge has not spelled out who restricted commando to paintball guns. Regardless, barak signed off on it. As the report finds fault with idf response even in the face of lynching, barak must resign as halutz did before winograd. Otherwise there is no accountability. Yaalon is very able as a replacement.
17. Palmer report
Arnold ,   Canada   (09.01.11)
The Israeli bashers will twist the details to suit their purposes especially the part about multiple gunshots in the back. When you are repelling down a rope and your buddy is about to get hit over the head with a steel bar you don't yell at the guy hey you stop that or I'll shoot you. I'd like to see autopsy reports from all the great wars where soldiers shot enemy soldiers in the back to prevent them from killing one of their own.
18. Excessive? Turkey has just killed 150 Kurds!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (09.01.11)
Now, that is a War Crime! Turkey sends terrorists to our waters who attack our soldiers are are assisted by an Israeli MK in beating and trying to kill them and Israel "should compensate Turkey"? Total madness but not unexpected from the Jew hating United Nations! The only thing Israel "must" do is break off diplomatic relations with Turkey, close Israeli Airspace to Turkish Airlines and treat Turkey as an eemy of Israe which is exactly what Turkey is! Come on PM Netanyahu! Show some backbone and respect for our men and women in uniform!
19. UN Report
yesjb ,   Canada   (09.01.11)
A fitting wad of toilet paper to be used to treat both diarrhea of the mouth and the butt, both features on the UN
20. Something seems wrong here...
William ,   Israel   (09.01.11)
The report shows the blockade was legal, so attempts to break it, per Intl Law, can be construed as an illegal military action. The report also acknowledges the crazed violence of the Turks, and the basically under-armed IDF soldiers who came on board and were brutally attacked. How in the world did they come to the conclusion that Israel was guilty? Only 9 Turks were killed, even though over 100 were involved in violent activities, and the board had just over 600 people....against a handful of soldiers who were being lynched. To me, it sounds like Israel had a great amount of restraint in face of horrible odds. What did the UN suggest next time....just get lynched so no activists get hurt? Well - that is the stance the UN has had with Israel for a very long time.
21. If deadly force justified, doesn't matter where person shot!
Cynic ,   USA   (09.01.11)
22. Preliminary opnion: yes and no.
John ,   Alaska   (09.01.11)
The report finds: a. Non-violent options should have been used in the first instance. In particular, clear prior warning that the vessels were to be boarded and a demonstration of dissuading force should have been given to avoid the type of confrontation that occurred; b. The operation should have reassessed its options when the resistance to the initial boarding attempt became apparent. As to finding A, I am inclined to agree, but truly have no idea what transpired. If someone has access to an unbiased account, I would like to know if this was done. Firing a cannonball across the ship's bow, accompanied by a shout above the waves "Heave to and prepare to be boarded!" sounds very Horatio Hornblower, but that the modern equivalent was/is done is vital. Again, does anyone know if it was? As to finding B, the only response is "you have never been in an armed conflict, have you?" Once one's team is under attack, the time for courtesy and diplomacy has passed. What the IDF did was keep from being killed by a mob that was trying its best to kill them. The IDF could reasses it's options once their personnel were no longer fighting for their lives.
23. UN Report
Cary N Mack   (09.01.11)
Of course the UN will condemn Israel. How many Arab countries are members of the UN?? The UN continues to treat Palestinians as refugees many generations after 1948. In the meantime Turkey kills the Kurds and gets away with it!
24. close range?
David ,   America   (09.01.11)
And just what would be long range on that row boat? Also, would sinking the vessel have been more humane than shooting a few violent persons among many?
25. Turkey has to apologize for
observer ,   Egypt   (09.01.11)
shots in the back, at close range or multiple times
26. As far as I am concerned UN must demand Turkey compensate
leo ,   usa   (09.01.11)
Israel for the cost of dealing with Turkish provocation plus compensatory and punitive payments to assaulted soldiers. Also Israel must demand Turkey does not attempt to compensate families of dead terrorists. And lastly Turkey must issue public apology to Israel.
27. no apology or payment to turkey. however turkey should pay
ralph   (09.01.11)
for all costs incurred.
28. Compensation
Arnold ,   Canada   (09.01.11)
First of all the Gaza embargo was deemed legal and the Turkish government knew that. Still they allowed the boat to leave. That immediately put responsibility on their heads. Any attempt by the flotilla members to run the blockade is done at their own peril. Any compensation should be by Turkey and if the Israelis feel they would like to give then that is their choice.
29. Palmer Report
Max ,   Washington DC   (09.01.11)
The Palmer Report got something right in that Israel's Blockade of gaza is legal under International Law, as well as the IDF boarding of the Turkish ship attempting to run the blockade. The Turkish "activists" attacked the IDF soldiers with iron pipes and bats which is deadly use of force. Therefore only an idiot would hold Israel accountable to pay restitution for acting in self defense. If anything Turkey is the one that needs to apologize and pay compensation to the isaeli's that were attacked and injured from the IHH Terrorists. The UN needs to cease it's anti-Israel anti-semitic actions or the US Congress may freeze or reduce its payments to the UN!
