1. and so....
Keats ,   New York, USA   (09.11.11)
we were left hanging after the story about the phone call. The phone call was initiated but we went right into a history lesson. Good article, but didn't elaborate on the phone call we started with.
2. obama pushed these islamists to power
Trumpeldor   (09.11.11)
Do not invert history ,thanks ...
3. Caught In The Loop of Fools
Dan ,   NYC USA   (09.11.11)
In case anyone's wondering, the writer is a Peace Now/Haaretz type who emphasizes Israel's dependence on the USA because he wants the USA to "rape" Israel.
4. this is obama's fault!!!
mira ,   israel   (09.11.11)
he messed everything up. the damb american jews should take notice.
5. Is this an echo?
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (09.11.11)
Sounds like bitter failure & unprincpled opportunist Livni with her usual ranting & raving about Netanyahu. The PM did what he had to do to save Israeli lives, even if that meant calling Obama. If Americans were involved, would Obama hesitate to call Netanyahu to save lives? Nothing that happens in Egypt even remotely has anything to do with us ultimately. This is the chaos & frustration, the fanaticism & intolerence of Egyptian society looking for a scapegoat for their abysmal failure as a society. As for Palestine, c'mon, stop blaming Israel for what everyone knows is Palestinian intransigence. Are we dependent on America? Only to a certain degree, but the author forgets we are not a colony. In any event, the Obama administration does not represent American public opinion re: Netanyahu. I'd bet that many, many Americans would gladly trade Obama for Netanyahu. Americans support Israel. The author forgets Netanyahu's reception by the joint American Congress.
6. Another lack of intention NOT mentioned
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (09.11.11)
The Egyptian government had no intention to actually live up to the spirit of the Peace Treaty. It simply pretended, looked for excuse after excuse and stuck its hand out to receive US money. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
7. A Favour?????
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (09.11.11)
Hang on a moment.Isn't asking the US administration to live up to its signed obligations a RIGHT? If the US administration hadn't guaranteed Egypt's compliance to Israel,Israel could not have signed the Peace Treaty and it had no pressing need to do so.The US administration was prepared to be guarantor because it was in its interest to secure that Treaty. I'm glad to see that somebody at Ynet has finally brought up the matter of the US's guarantee.I've been banging on about it for long enough to deaf ears. Now,how about Israel's American supporters reading this getting in touch with their Congressmen and representatives and demanding action from their administration? THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
8. Israel blame yourself
dan ,   USA   (09.11.11)
why should what America do be to the sole benefit of Israel? American policy should benefit the USA. It is not America's fault Israel is hated. American didn't kill Egyptian border guards. America didn't kill 9 Turkish citizens. America didn't kill 1200 in Gaza. American doesn't put up settlements, say they will support terrorist groups like the PKK, scold Israel's leaders in public like Netanyahu does to America and every other country on earth. Israel is totally dependent on the U.S. is ungrateful, surly, and contributes little to nothing to America but bribing politicians! Then blame it on the U.S. Egypt's public hates Israel. Israel has to deal with it. Not Obama! They could start by stopping settlements. That is one reason they are hated in the region.
9. Really
michaelpielet ,   boca raton, Israel   (09.11.11)
This article is pure nonsense.
10. Egypt needs peace as much as Israel
Mark Jeffery Koch ,   Cherry Hill, NJ USA   (09.11.11)
Egypt has to decide whether it wants to be part of the community of nations or else whether it wants to become a pariah State like Iran. Civilized countries do not allow their citizens to attack and destroy the embassy of another country and, unless they were stopped, to possibly maim and kill diplomats. Egypt was once the cradle of civilization but now it is a poor country that has offered nothing to the world in terms of science, medicine, literature, and technology. Egypt has to choose between mob rule by Islamic fundamentalists or joining the world community. Killing Israelis is not going to free Egyptians from the abject poverty they live in, and killing Israelis will not make the Egyptian people free, or give them the rights to freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion. Egypt has a clear choice between joining the Assad's and Ahmadinejad's of the world and bettering the life of all its people or else letting the fundamentalists destroy a once great nation.

18. idiot
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (09.11.11)
Until 1967, the US ignored Israel. After Israel liberated Sinai in 1967, Israel accepted the American brokered and guaranteed cease fire. The Americans allowed the Egyptians to break the cease fire, what eventually led to the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur war. After the Yom Kippur war, Israel surrendered Sinai to Egypt for American guarantees that have proven worthless. I do not blame the Americans. It made sense for the them to sacrifice Israel for an alliance with Egypt. I blame the stupid Israelis who are willing to risk Israel's existence on the narrow interests of a foreign power.
19. Retreat lies behind every major Israeli problem.
Chaim   (09.12.11)
This article is beyond ridiculous. Israel has no "existential" reliance on the vile Obama regime. Ceding Sinai is the root source of all Israel's problems with Egypt. The Sinai was a huge asset militarily, strategically, financially and due to it's immense energy and tourist wealth. Had Israel kept SInai; our risk of war with Egypt would be very low. The Sinai makes war with Egypt quickly and easily winnable. Behind every major Israeli problem lies an Israeli retreat.
20. #5 Terry in the deep south
Gideon Reader ,   USA   (09.11.11)
Hey fellow, where have you been? I've been looking for you, knowing that you have not been too well of late. Asking around here has not been very fruitful. Glad to see you back and creating. Stay safe and well. Gid
21. Ungrateful with a ...
American Jew ,   New Jersey, USA   (09.11.11)
thumb in America's eye, eh? Please consider Israel behaviours objectively, not rabid irrational emotions, and count ur looong time pile of American blessings, particularly all that our President Obama gives Israel and Jews worldwide ... there is much to be grateful for from Obama. Also, please consider ur disasterous alternatives.
22. Pointless Piece from a Peacenik
Roy ,   USA   (09.12.11)
The author's tangential, directionless words reflect the mindset of a confused individual who is unsure of what he intends to say ,other than the usual rubbish from the PEACE NOW crowd
23. To # 9
Brett ,   Florida   (09.12.11)
If you REALLY mean Bibi called bho to let him know Israel was going to kick some serious A$$ ? I couldn't agree with you more! Call it propaganda or disinformation, it dosen't matter. As long as the world thinks Israel won't act, The better for Israel.
24. Simple Simon was a High man
Ilan   (09.12.11)
Drug induced stupor is the only rational explanation for this rambling. Was Israel's existence threatened? No just our embassy and the future diplomatic relations between Egypt and Israel. Calling the US in attempt to stave off the murder of the Israeli guards was a mutual US and Israeli interest.
25. #20 Gideon.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (09.12.11)
Thanks for the concern. I'm alive & well.
26. Why on earth do Egyptians care so much for the Palestinians?
Tahl   (09.12.11)
Shiffer claims that "the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to serve as the fuel that fans the flames of public opinion in Egypt". I really do not understand this. Why on earth are the Egyptians so concerned with the Palestinians? They have practically nothing in common. The peace with Israel greatly helped the Egyptian economy, with a new export destination, new jobs created by Israeli firms building factories in Egypt, and of course the money America gives them for this peace. What have the Palestinians ever contributed to the Egyptians? Two wars they lost to Israel, costing them tens of thousands of casualties? Terror in Sinai? I fail to see the logic in the Egyptian mind. Don't they realize these obvious facts?

US_Exceptionalist ,   Boston, USA   (09.12.11)
Thank you, Ian, for spotlighting the fact that the United States is a signatory to the treaty with Egypt as guarantor of compliance by both parties. Netanyahu wasn't asking for any "favors." He was asking for nothing less than for what Israel is entitled by treaty.
30. #10
Marty ,   USA   (09.12.11)
But you are assuming that the Egyptians are inclined to act rationally. There is no basis for that assumption in a country where the prevailing belief system preaches that the Jews are their greatest enemy and where Jew-hatred is an integral part of the fabric of their culture. As Golda said peace will only be possible when the Arabs love their children more than they hate Jews." In fact, the greatest insult that you can hurl against someone in their culture is to call them a "Jew" or to paint a Star of David on their picture.
