1. Reason - US has NOT offered the Palestinians ANYTHING...
CK Tan ,   Singapore, Singapore   (09.14.11)
...in return for ABANDONING the statehood bid - by Erekat (6 Sep 11)
2. the point of no return = bye bye farcical "peace process"
Salma ,   Palestine   (09.14.11)
Ahlan Peace !
3. why UN?
observer ,   Egypt   (09.14.11)
because self-determination is not negotiable.
4. Israel's Mistake
Israeli 2   (09.14.11)
began in 1948 with the establishment of leftist establishments who had an idealistic panorama of living in peace with our neighbors. It continued and continued even at the expense of hundreds of Israeli citizens. 63 years later and the mistake continues. They gave away Gaza. FOR WHAT? For peace that never came. They wanted to give away Jerusalem and the west bank. FOR WHAT? For peace that never materialized. This will be a historic opportunity for the Israeli leadership to declare once and for all: We are done negotiating! We are annexing all of our lands. The Palestinians have a country called Jordan. We shall help you move over there...including those in Gaza. Then, retake Gaza and learn from history as we shall truly finally say: NEVER AGAIN!
5. #2 Salma
jonathan ,   london/ israel   (09.14.11)
"Ahlan Peace" - that's not what we're hearing from Hamas in Gaza, so who exactly are represented when Abbas goes to the UN?
6. Palestine in peace
T.S   (09.14.11)
Israel did not negotiate to proclaim its independent, (Balfour, Irgun, Hagana ->UN) so why do you expect the Palestinians to do so? Independence and freedom are not negotiable, they are basic human rights
7. Very good
Eyal ,   USA Israel   (09.14.11)
Thank G-D our Palestinians neighbors have a lesser brain. They think it's a game, but when they lose their pants they will only realize the stupidity of their game. They are on a verge of collapse or lose a lot more than Israel, yet they are sticking to their plans? Am I missing something or is this G-D's work? Do they even care if their children starve? I think Israel should tell them, you go to the UN, we are annexing everything and we are stopping all negotiations with the Palestinians, as well as previous agreements, money transfers, everything. Time to play their game.
8. Palestinian bid must result in severe Israeli actions.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (09.14.11)
The Israeli gov't. should renounce the two-state solution once & for all. The Oslo Accords are null & void. We too can take unilateral actions & torpedo ''Palestine'' ..... Any kind of independent Palestinian entity is a threat to our security. Egypt has become an enemy state & the Sinai will become a source of terrorist attacks from Hamas. Turkey threatens us every day - what would prevent Turkey from using ''Palestine'' as a military base against us? Jordan's regime is tottering on the edge, the regime could fall & be replaced by a Muslim Brotherhood controled regime. We have no way of predicting what will happen in Syria - all we know is that it will be hostile. And, then there is Hezbollah on our northern border. What would prevent them from setting up shop in ''Palestine''??? A Palestinian state will continue the conflict with us, that is a 100% certainty.

CK Tan ,   Singapore, Singapore   (09.14.11)
Welcome back, Terry :-) Gideon Reader said last week you were unwell and have not posting as usual. So it is good to see you here again. Take care!
10. Path to conflict
M.J. Eizen ,   Petah Tikvah, Israel   (09.14.11)
It does not take a crystal ball to see that the future means war in the region. Once statehood is granted by the UN, even as an "observer state", the Palestinians will become more, not less intransigent, making demands that Israel cannot meet, including withdrawal from major settlements, and East Jerusalem, including the old city. Regional players, including Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon (Hizballah) and perhaps Iran, will "champion" the rights of the Palestinians. I have no doubt we heading towards war. The losers which will not be Israel, will pay an incredible price.
11. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
Eric.... ,   Israel.....   (09.14.11)
I do not think Abbas is looking at the full picture and in the long run its going too cost the Palestinians big time.Abbas you talk peace with Israel not the UN.
12. #8 Terry.I agree with what you have
Eric..... ,   Israel.....   (09.14.11)
written. You know this I know this Israel knows this. But the world does not and that is the problem pal.
13. #9 CK Tan, Singapore.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (09.14.11)
Thank you for your kind remarks. I visited Singapore very briefly many years ago & was most impressed. Israel could learn a great deal by your example. I often read your posts & it's nice to know we have supporters in your part of the world. Of course, you face the same threat as we do, your neighbors are not very amusing either.
14. The immediate results of "spitting" at all past agreements..
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (09.14.11)
...and resolutions on the basis of which the PLO was ushered into the peace process and the Palestinian Authority came into being, e.g. UN Security Council Resolution, 242, and the Oslo Accords, will be: 1. Total closure of borders on Gaza: neither people nor goods will pass in either direction. 2. Economic and financial sanctions on the West Bank. 3. "Area C" and most of "Area B" of the Oslo Accords that will be viewed as abrogated by the PLO/PA will become integral part of the nation-state of the Jewish people. 4. A new Hebrew city between Jericho and Beit Sh'an will be built in order to serve the eastern frontiers of Israel and the agricultural communities there. P.S., that which will remain of the Palestinian Authority will have the opportunity then to join Jordan and Egypt.
15. Is the EU going to have the guts to say NO to Abbas?
Rebecca ,   Modiin   (09.14.11)
Abbas appears to be giving the EU nothing to hold onto. If that's the case, will the EU have the guts to oppose this vote, in either the General or Security council? Will they really say, sorry Palestinians, but you actually have to compromise on something and talk WITH Israel? I doubt it. Somehow they'll opt out.
16. to #6 actually Israel was already exist
ghostq   (09.14.11)
you see, Israel had 3 time state in the area according to history, it was only formality of re-establishing, all the documents even show that, on the other hand palestinians have never had a state or kingdom or anything similar in the area, that is y the atitudes r different.
17. #8 - Terry
Maurice ,   Canada   (09.14.11)
Right as usual. But will the EU listen?
18. Abbas's agenda
Brod ,   USA   (09.14.11)
The PA's agenda is to manipulate and use the UN to crusade against Israel. It is a subtle Hitlerian tactic to effect a Holocaust on Israel. Western countries should NOT be fooled by these Islamist-Jihadists, who have been crusading against Israel and Western Civilization/the whole non-Islamist world, since they sprouted in the Arabian Desert in the 7th century. Israel must remain united, strong and resolute in confronting and countering the Tsunami of dark forces against her.
19. Lucky Israel....
Ram ,   London   (09.14.11)
Somehow I do not think the PA plays good chess and do not realize that a counter-move can deliver unsavory consequences.
20. Irreversible?
Yakov ,   Tel Aviv   (09.14.11)
Does this also mean when their bid is rejected, that will also be irreversible?
21. Israel didn't negotiate self-determination in 1948
observer ,   Egypt   (09.14.11)
22. September showdown
Cisco ,   France   (09.14.11)
Abbas is going to NYC to ask for an international recognition. If he decides to present his project to the UNSC... Abbas will take the responsability for an international crisis. I am wondering about the US reaction this betrayal? If he decided to go before the UN General Assembly, Palestine will be recognised (but only symbolic). Abbas called all Palestinians to protest on september 21. Abbas has no longer any legitimity, and he's using his ultimate joker. Hamas is not endorsing this UN process.... But Gaza will be the first to launch rockets on this famous day.... The situation could sharply worsen!
23. #21
A ,   Belgium   (09.14.11)
Israel in 1948, as today, had no one to negotiate with. "Palestine" was an area carved out of of the former Ottoman Empirer by the British, as was Lebanon and Syria (France) and Libya (Italy), for a few examples. Israel, as opposed to the non-existant land/state/country called "palestine", had been occupied by the Turks, Romans and just about every other empire since biblical times. And there is proof. There is absolutley NO proof of a "palestine" or "palestinian" people or culture. They are an invention of your president Nasser. Israel was reborn through vote in the UN, exactly like your "palestinian" brothers are trying. The difference is that the Jews were coming home, while the "palestinians" are going nowhere.
24. #13 Terry of Eilat
CK _Tan ,   Singapore, Singapore   (09.14.11)
Thank you, Terry. Just for the record - your posts are always well thought out whereas mine is usually pretty blunt :-)
25. The absolute fiasco of the result is also irreversible.
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.14.11)
Abbas doesn't seem to realize this is the second time the P.A. has made a bid for statehood. The first bid in 1988 was an absolute fiasco, though conditions for Palestine statehood were infinitely more favorable in 1988 than today. We are about to witness the second Palestine statehood fiasco; and it will be a far bigger fiasco than 1988. After the smoke clears, there will be more statehood bids for fictional Palestine. Palestine is toast. The statehood bid is irreversible. So is the resulting fiasco.
26. #2. Bye bye fictional Palestine too.
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.14.11)
#2 Salma. Finally Salma, you and I can agree on something. We both agree the "peace process" is fictional. We can both happily say goodbye to the fiction. However, like it or not, the coming Palestine statehood fiasco also means bye bye to fictional Palestine. After the ridiculous statehood declaration blows sky high: Palestine is toast. It has zero credibility. It could become the butt of late night talk shows.
27. Nothing to Worry About....
Joe ,   Toronto Canada   (09.14.11)
as the US, EU and Saudi Arabia will never let the bid happen. Even though the Pals and their supporters consistently go down the wrong road, in this case, money talks big time. All the Abbas talk and all the associated talkbacks are just blowing hot air.
