Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (09.18.11)
Back in the 1960s Bruce, Jewish comic and social critic, had a routine involving mezuzot that were ... Made in Japan. Today it's Israeli flags, IDF uniforms, and now shofars. Chabad already distributes Hanukah candles made in China.

The IDF must always get the best product wherever possible If the chinese sofars are cheaper and better than the pricy Israeli junk the IDF is 100% right in saving capital. Its more important than paying the exhorbatant prices that Israelis are demanding. Now we see why the committees cut 3 billion from IDF money The IDF does not need to waste money on religious junk.
5. oh well in that case

6. Could be good or bad...
Etoile ,   Montreal, CAN   (09.19.11)
If the Chinese/Morroccan ram horns are truly of same quality and cheaper than the Israeli ones, then by all means the money must be saved. However, I really find that hard to believe. Israeli shofars do not need to travel long distances to their ordered locations and the supply should be plentiful (livestock raised in Israel will essentially see to that... plus the life of a shofar lasts years making new supply not that high as time goes on). Something else must be going on here. Are Israeli tariffs and taxes on homemade products really that high as to go halfway across the world to get a product that is locally produced without issue? Stories like these raise alot of questions.
7. Tested for lead?
JB ,   Rehovot Israel   (09.19.11)
Cheap Chinese goods are full of lead and other toxins. The quality control is terrible too. Penny wise and pound foolish often leads to big problems later. Plenty of Americans avoid Walmart like the plague, even though they have the cheapest prices on most goods.
8. One has to ask how much does it cost the
Joe ,   Ohio, USA   (09.19.11)
country when a job is shipped overseas. At some point there is a break even point for slightly higher priced products being produced in country
9. For the amount of money being saved
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (09.19.11)
I would be happy to pay the difference to the suppliers to buy Israeli products.
