31. Anyone who did not serve in the I.D.F.
jason white ,   afula, israel   (11.01.11)
should have his or her license for a private vehicle cancelled.
32. All Israelis must have their driving licence confiscated
Han Xui   (11.01.11)
Then take proper driving lessons from foreign instructors and sit for the exams again, until they learn to drive properly.
33. @Shalom Hartman.Sorry thats no excuse. Benkel kwetchers who
PETER SM ,   AUSTRALIA   (11.01.11)
are there because it is expected, do not need a drivers licence to wander around & battel their days away. They would be better off with some army discipline followed by a job. Those that want to learn, attend seders and davening as required, will do so with or without a licence. The problem may well be their Rebbi's lack of adequate supervision and example.
34. Then why not...
Danit ,   Israel   (11.01.11)
make "skipping yeshiva for frequent trips here and there" grounds for expulsion instead of having a license? But then again, I should not expect any logic here...
35. In answer to #24
Shalom Hartman   (11.01.11)
Good question! I have 4 boys in yeshiva. Each one has chosen his path. I actually was not so in favor of this place as its very big, but my son very much wanted to go there and got passed the exam. We allow our kids to choose their own path. We do camping and touring during vacations and are not scared to mix with non-religious people, Interestingly, all my kids have come out very well-rounded with a good general knowledge, get on great with people from all backgrounds, are all planning on doing army/national service in the future - and all feel that the secular world has little to offer them.
36. #35 Hartman, It is 5:30 AM here now.
Michael ,   California, USA   (11.01.11)
I woke up and turned the computer on. Imagine, a working secular computer. Thank you for replying to my question overnight. The world's economy seems crashing this morning. Can your four sons and you, with all of your religious education, account for that? And the dynasours perished 75 million years ago, can you and your sons explain that, based on the Tanah? Yes, you are stirring me to thinking Mr. Hartman, and to hoping your four sons will have a driving license when they serve.
37. to #36; you're ridiculous
yoyo ,   UK   (11.01.11)
If the world's economy is crashing, it is more likely to be due to stupid materialist people who have lost all faith in their creator and their traditions like you! You still have to explian to us what's the connection between the dinosaurs and a ban of driving licences in a yeshiva. Only baseless hate! Poor guy.
38. Ridiculous and Stupid
Rafi Hecht ,   Toronto   (11.01.11)
Granted, the Yeshiva had a rule and the students didn't stick to it. Fine. But for the administration to go so far as to illegally extract information about them from the DMV by posing as legal officials is just wrong. Just because the over-age students were "wrong" to violate a Yeshiva rule, 2 wrongs don't make a right. That said, call me naive, but I doubt these Bochrim will have trouble finding another Yeshiva quickly if they're good learners. While in Chutz La'aretz here things are more "normal," I can't see it where ALL the GOOD yeshivos in Israel have this specific madness. Hooliganism is not Judaism.
39. "Shalom Hartman", #12
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (11.01.11)
"They deserved to get kicked out." Getting kicked out is the best thing that could possibly happen to them (assuming they don't immediately enter another brainwashing academy). That aside - you shouldn't be allowed to use the name of that venerable Modern Orthodox institution as your pseudonym. Call yourself "Mindless Haredi Robot" instead.
40. #35 Michael
Shalom Hartman   (11.01.11)
There is NO conflict between Torah and technology, nor Torah and "evolution". If you are seriously interested I suggest you start with a "Discovery" Seminar or read up on Gerald Schroeder's "Big Bank" books. You can also google "Torah and technology"
41. #37 UK, Hint: his 4 sons are not getting educated. Dig it?
Michael ,   California, USA   (11.01.11)
42. Don't you know the roads belong to the arsim anyways.
Able   (11.01.11)
43. Isn't it a form of lying to commit identity fraud?
Lisa   (11.01.11)
Regardless of whether these boys were right or wrong in getting a license when they agreed not to (or whether the yeshiva had a right to demand this), how can the yeshiva justify entering a database and eliciting information that they're not entitled to see? This is identity theft, fraud, and lying. What kind of educational message is that for the boys? It's not okay for you to lie about having a license but it's okay for us to lie about who we are and steal private information. Doesn't sound very educational to me.
44. Why?
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (11.02.11)
If the ban on driving licenses is to prevent students from serving in the IDF, then this Yeshiva is one of the anti-Zionist yeshivas and in fact should be closed. If not then what is the reason for this ban – to promote better scholarship or limit the possibility of their students from finding gainful employment?
45. #40 Hartman, A huge conflict.
Michael ,   California, USA   (11.02.11)
You know, Shalom, you should read "One Thousand and One Nights." He whispers "Sesame" and the mountain opens up. Within it there are treasures, gold and diamonds. Now, that's technology! Don't worry that it's all Muslim. All hokus-pokuses are the same. Gerald Schroeder, huh? Did he write One Thousand and One Nights? Torah, huh? Give me a break and give your sons some real education.
46. Who cares?
Ish Kabibble ,   Delancey   (11.03.11)
If they can afford the car, its upkeed & insurance, let them drive SAFELY Besides, no better place for making out than the back of a car
47. No problem: Join the IDF, get a job....
Elad ,   Yahel, Israel   (11.03.11)
48. i love talkbackers who have no idea what
izzy d   (11.04.11)
they are talking about yet strangely have so much to say. as if an institution cannot choose its own policy's.
49. Does the rabbi have a drivers license??
Adam ,   NY, USA   (04.08.12)
Practice what you preach. This is the dumbest rule ever, what if one of these yeshivah boys needs to drive someone to a hospital for an emergency?? A rabbi is not a king, he's a spiritual leader, stick to teaching, not ruling.
50. The Enlightenment occurred a few hundred years ago!
Sailor ,   USA   (04.09.12)
That being said, people can live the way they want as long as they are net contributors to society, society doesn't need to support them and they don't leave everyone else alone. Unfortunately, the economic/societal model of Israel is flawed regarding the Haredim, and given their birth rates, it will get worse.
