1. And the ersatz "Palestinians" ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.03.11)
... thought that they could just walk right in the front door. Predictably enough -- and they were warned -- they chose the stupid path, and Israel now has a very valid argument that the Oslo accords have been irretrievably abrogated and are thus no longer valid or binding. That is the price the ersatz "Palestinians" must pay for generations of marrying their first cousins and uncles. Terminal stupidity.
2. Why, PA, why???
William ,   Israel   (11.03.11)
The PA usually brings destruction upon all who support her and the "Palestinians", from despotic Arab rulers to the UN itself. But why, PA, why stop only at UNESCO? There are 16 other UN agencies desperately in need of defunding by global govts. The world has been talking about ending subsidies for this biased anti-western organization for years but no one could be the first one to do it. You helped them make that first step, and we applaud you for it. So, for the sake of every Occupy Everything movements, help released billions in wasted money back into social programs across the world. At least that make make up partially for the satanic, terrorist reputation you have all over the world.
3. No one else will fight for Israel.
Tor Gnon ,   Njamena, Chad   (11.03.11)
I expect Israel to adopt very harsh and non-negotiable measures against the PA,humas, hellbulah, etc. As long as we rely on some PC PR, the children of evil will continue misbehaving. Just stop talking and act and let them feel it. That's all. The world can't hate you more than what it's doing now. I urge actions! not cheap talks.
4. First time
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (11.03.11)
Standing up against fascists does work. We need to do it some more.
5. "Soft" power can work even if you don't intend it
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (11.03.11)
Once again the US "separation of powers" demonstrates its importance. While our Executive branch, especially the State Department under Clinton, drones on about using "soft" power in a smart fashion, they're remarkably reluctant to use it. Thus they'll "urge" the PA, or Turkey, or another recalcitrant body to do something, but attach no consequences to refusal. Fortunately, our Legislative branch - the Congress - had legislation in place that *mandated* a cutoff of funds if a UN agency recognized a non-State Palestine as a state member. The UN and PA, which had turned aside all US entreaties on the matter, now realize that actions *do* have consequences, that there is a price to be paid. The US, as the largest contributor to the UN, UNRWA, and PA have enormous leverage, if only they are willing to use it.
6. PA UN Plan
max ,   washington dc   (11.03.11)
Looks like the PA Plan to hijack the UN and it's agencies is backfiring by scuttling donor's contributions. Withholding financial support seems to trump supporting the PA's attempt of avoiding direct negotiations with Israel to achieve a mutually agreed palestinian state.
7. UNESCO and UN bid by Pallies
florida gold coast ,   usa   (11.03.11)
another miscalculation by clowns of emotion rather than serious men of with realistic goals....what a time waster and heartache for Israel to have to deal with these folks. (not to mention rest of the world)
8. UNESCO shouldn`t worry
Nora Tel Aviv   (11.03.11)
What`s the problem with 25% less contribution ? Iran is here. Saudia is here. They could easily compensate the loss to please the PA. But....would they ?
9. The usless UN
Spencer ,   Israel   (11.03.11)
Millions of dollars are wasted in funding the UN and its agencies because it has been hijacked by extremist muslims. The time has come for all member states who are against this "hijacking" to follow the example set by the USA, Canada and Israel in their action of stopping their financing of UNESCO and stop all financing of the UN and the UN agencies. This will will cause the UN to collapse. Then form a new body that will uphold the original principles and aims and objects for which the UN was originally formed. Make membership of the new organisation a privilege and make sure that ALL applications are vetted. Membership should be dependant on strict observance of these principles and any member not complying should be subject to immediate expulsion
10. Easiest acceptance = peace with Israel, but...
Brian Cohen ,   PeoplesFrontofJudea   (11.03.11)
... the Pals are showing the world more and more that peace with Israel is not their goal.
11. What positive purpose does the UN serve?
michael redbourn ,   Arad Israel   (11.03.11)
What positive purpose does the UN serve? None for the West and that's for sure! Leaders of countries, and diplomats can now speak one-on-one or make conference calls and see each other eye to eye. There's no reason for the UN building to exist and even less reason for the West to bankroll it. If the Arab and African countries that despise the West and always vote against it want to pay for the UN then let them.
12. Oh please Abbas! Go ahead and apply for membership
Harry Wright ,   UK   (11.03.11)
in the other 16 UN bodies. Success is within your grasp. DON'T STOP now, please! Isn't this just wonderful? You has just killed Oslo and Israel can now wash its hands off you. Pass the towel. There is no need now for either one of you to utter a single word to each other. Just walk on by. Time for annexation.
13. Good to see some countries standing up for justice.
Scott ,   NY, US   (11.03.11)
That being, the Palestinians do not deserve nation status, seeing as they are not their own people.
14. Let PA Make Up The Difference
emanon ,   USA   (11.03.11)
15. with oslo dead the plo can be legally deported
Bernard Ross ,   st anns bay, jamaica   (11.03.11)
to tunisia back into exile or even better to their brothers in gaza. Oslo allowed them to return.
16. they are fighting a losing battle at the Security Council
zionist forever   (11.03.11)
Abbas may have talked UNESCO to grant admittance to the palestinians despite the fact they have a state let alone UN membership. If though he is trying to lobby the Security Council into granting them independence then he has got a problem and thats called the US veto. At UNESCO the US is just another voice amongst many even if it does contribute the lions share to its budget but in the Security Council they have a veto which they have clearly stated they will use. Poor Abbas, all his hard work will result in a major failure and humiliation. As for Ban moaning about how terrible it will be if the US cuts funding well maybe it will teach the UN a lesson that every action has a reaction and if they get America's back up then America will punish them for it.. Maybe this will teach the UN a lesson and next time the palestinians apply to join a UN agency they will be rejected because no other agencies want to lose all those American money.
17. Disband the PA, one-state solution
Samer ,   West Bank   (11.04.11)
Netanyahu, Lieberman, and his hard-line coalition will never offer the Palestinians anything remotely close to a sovereign, viable state. They won't even let the Palestinians have Arab East Jerusalem. At best, the Palestinians will get a swiss cheese state encircled by extremist settlements and the IDF with no sovereignty. Netanyahu has already said this, and so there is no point in negotiating over crumbs. The only solution is to disband the PA and seek full citizenship in an Israel which encompasses the entire land. Then power will be divided equally between Arab-Jew in this new bi-national State of Israel. That is the road we are headed.
18. US is beating the stateless Palestinians into submission
James ,   Canada   (11.04.11)
Well done USA, you have beaten the stateless Palestinian people into submission. Now if only the USA could get Abbas to accept the swiss cheese mickey mouse state that Netanyahu and Lieberman are offering, and get them to agree that the millions of Palestinian refugees living in tattered refugee camps will have no home to return to...then we could all move on with our lives from this whole Palestinian "nuisance."
19. IN the event any additional UN Agencies
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (11.04.11)
Allow the Palestinian's to attain membership, they all now know that it will result in the USA defunding them; they don't want to endanger a main source of revenue, Congress has already made UNESCO an example
20. The UN probably begged them behind their backs....
Vlad   (11.04.11)
The United States and Israel would have bankrupted the UN had the Pallies continued.
